    Default Scanners and digital cameras...

Anyone have any recommendations for these? I have to get a scanner ASAP as I am doing a lot of long-distance architectural drawing work.

I am also long overdue to get a scanner for publicity purposes, and I see they have scanner/printer/fax combinations everywhere for 100$. I would easily be willing to spend 2-300$ on a nice one if the extra money goes towards picture quality, but I could give a flying f*ck about how fast it works or how many copies I can send.

I had saved a bunch of the technical handouts on several models, but where they are now who knows, lol. It did seem as though the higher priced models might give better reproduction quality, which would be well worth it.

Same goes for digital cameras. All I care about is picture quality, although the option of using the same camera to take crisp close-up photos of architectural models and medium range photos of real models would be ideal. I am looking to spend about 300$ on this as well.

Nikon digital cameras are good the only problem with them is the USB.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I have a Canon LIDE 30, it serves me fine. I wanted a small/thin foot print.
I detest the "combination" products. I would rather have each unit seperate so if one "breaks or is outdated" i can upgrade to a newer unit. BTW, fax is becoming obsolete as email/attachments are becoming the norm for record purposes. And i'll never buy a color inkjet again until they get the clogging and off color printing issues fixed not to mention the insane price of cartridges that are only good for 50 pages. Toner printers all the way for me.

"Scanners are often spec'ed at 600x1200 dpi or 1200x2400 dpi, but offer resolution up to 9600 dpi or more. So what does that mean?
In the 1200x2400 dpi specification, the lower number is the very important optical resolution of the CCD cell. The larger number is the mechanical stepping of the motor drive. The motor steps are an important scanner specification, but it does not contribute to optical resolution. Resolutions greater than the optical rating are interpolated resolution, done in software after the 1200 dpi optical scan. Interpolated resolution is the least important scanner specification, useful only for line art mode to reduce jaggies, and then only when we have similarly high resolution output device, like a 1200x1200 dpi printer..................."

I have a Casio Z55 camera. $325 on EBAY. There may be cameras that have better optic specs for close ups. I find there is not much difference in a 3x5 picture taken with a 2.0 megapixel or a 5.0 megapixel. However, when you start to blow them up on the computer (or want to edit them in photoshop) the higher density ones retained the detail longer. The two most important things were battery life and picture lag. The Casio has an eye viewfinder so the screen can be turned off saving battery life. Nice if you are in the middle of Disney Land, a birthday party or on a Playboy Yacht and did not bring a pocket full of batteries. Picture lag is .1 second (fast) after pressing the button. There is nothing more frustrating than missing the shot with a 2 second lag !

I've been through so many digital cameras, and my absolute favorite is my new Minolta G400. It's well priced ($250), 4 MP, optical zoom, small, covered lens, rechargeable battery...perfect. My mum has the D'Image and says only good things about it too.

I would NOT recommend any HP camera. Ever. Horrible.

Pretty much any scanner'll do ya...I recently used this old boxy one from years ago, and at 300dpi the quality was excellent. I haven't met a bad scanner yet
