    Post (Illegal) Good sunscreen!

"The New York Times features a story on a sunscreen ingredient that Europeans & Canadians have been swearing by for ages, but is illegal in the US (the FDA has yet to approve it). If you can get your hands on 'Mexoryl', found in top Euro beauty products, Ombrelle Extrame ($11), Garnier's Ambre Solaire ($24) or the particularly coveted, Anthelios "L" by La Roche-Posay, then you are one lucky person.

Why? Mexoryl has been dubbed by dermatologists to be one of the most effective filters of all wavelengths of UV light. These are the rays that wrinkle the skin prematurely & Americans are so antsy to get their hands on the product they are going all out to get it while the FDA fuddles around with its approval. Risky buyers can try it online from Canadian websites like feelbest.com."

Anyone have any ideas where else we could get this?

Just wanted to update this story with this article.
"WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The Food and Drug Administration Monday approved a new over-the-counter sunscreen that has a new active ingredient not previously approved for use in the United States.
The agency approved Anthelios SX, a moisturizer from L'Oreal (12032.FR) that contains ingredients designed to protect against sunburn from and exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays from the sun.
Anthelios SX contains a combination of three active ingredients, including avobenzone and octocrylene, standard ingredients in sunscreens already approved for sale in the U.S. The new active ingredient approved for use in the U.S. in the product is ecamsule. Ecamsule has been marketed in Europe and Canada as Mexoryl SX since 1993, the FDA said.
Octocrylene is designed to block UVB rays from the sun, while Avobenzone blocks long UVA rays. The newest ingredient, Ecamsule, or Mexoryl, is designed to block short UVA rays.
Anthelios will be available sometime this fall and will be sold by L'Oreal's LaRoche-Posay division. "

Wow, I can't believe they don't have Ombrelle in the US! My (very fair) sister used the SPF 70 in Costa Rica and came back with a beautiful deep tan and NO BURN! And this is being outside for 12+ hours per day.

I'm going to go kiss my bottle and thank it for being legal.

Why is it illegal? What's wrong with it?

Its not illegal so much as not yet approved by the FDA so manufaturers cannot sell it in the US yet. Hopefully we will see it stores soon--it sounds good.

The ladies on YTF sing praises about mexoryl, specifically anthelios brand, however they shy away from avobenzene. I can't remember why. *runs over to research*

There are Anthelios products with up to an SPF of 60. A lot of people think that an SPF of 30 is twice as strong as an SPF of 15. It isn't - it's only 4 percent stronger against UVB rays.

I'm really glad it's finally been approved...hopefully it will bring prices down too as it's very expensive!
