Default Pit Bull Death, 12 yr old, SF

I almost feel sorry for the boy's mother. But frankly, this could have been avoided.
We had an overly aggressive Lab Retriever and we put him down after he nipped/bit too many times. Maybe breed doesn't matter, I have met plenty of sweet pit bulls.
I agree with restrictive laws for aggressive dogs in cities. Oftentimes the victims in these cases are not people familiar to the dog, but passerby who are "invading" the dog's space. Children are also perceived as a threat to dogs because they are closer in size to dogs and therefore "rivals", whereas adults are obviously dominant-appearing from their height.

    Uh. Question.

Why put the kid in the basement with the dogs upstairs, instead of the dogs in the basement with the kid upstairs? Or at least put the dogs into a bedroom or something.

And some of her comments... the mother sounds like a lunatic!

I think there is going to be some jail time on this one.

Yeah, I thought she sounded messed up. I factor in her incredible grief, but hell, I would not defend my dogs in this case. Oh f*ck no. Not when they ate my kid. Considering how recent the Whipple mauling death was in connection to this, I see some laws coming to restrict at least pit bulls in SF.

"Maureen Faibish said she put Nicholas rather than the dogs in the basement because the room, which also served as a playroom for the children, was filled with plastic bags in preparation of their move. She figured the dogs would have destroyed the bags filled with clothes. "

So the mother knew that there was concern of leaving the dogs with her child, but she didn't it anyway.

One thing I don't understand is why they put one dog down and so far are just keeping the other one in a cage.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

It's said to be an 'apartment' but has a basement and a backyard...not many apartments allow TWO large dogs. Plus, they wanted puppies...which they probably did not have room for. No doubt they weren't going to keep them, but really wanted to make money from selling them...probably to people that would train them to fight.
What if there was a fire and the child was in the basement with the door barred?
Sounds like NOTHING was thought through.

Yes - Kennels were definately an option. Go down to PetSmart, lay out the dollars for two kennels and put the dogs in there.

My dog wasn't much of a social animal - unless it was with the pack of other hunting animals. He didn't like kids and was very territorial. When you have a dog like that, you keep a close eye on him (and I also had 40+ acres for him to run his energy out on too.)

I think it would be a shame for responsible dog owners to pay the penalties for this idiot. But, knowing San Francisco like I do (people don't kill people - guns kill people), I am sure there will be somekind of ban coming up for legislation.

I am so glad I don't live in California anymore. The place even has border guards - oh they like to call themselves agricultural inspection stations but they are stopping me and peering around. It is a crazy state.

It sounds to me as if it was one of those SF three story homes. But what really bugged me about the story was what the mother said that her son was predestined to go at that time.

People forget that dogs are animals, not people. That child has inherently more value than the dog that killed him.

Dangerous animals need to be put to death.

Another thing I wanted to added was why the hell was this woman going to breed a dog with an aggressive tempermen. I always thought that in dog breeding the temperment and look of the dog were both important not look over temperment.

My neighbor is getting ready to breed her unrecognizable mutt (i say unrecognizable bc it is such a mix there is no way to tell what breed it is, I can't even start to guess) with a mangy, but purebred elderly stray lab that was found in our neighborhood last week. I know that's not the same thing as breeding w a bad temperment but just my point that people tend to breed animals just for the hell of it. Bc they think it's 'cute' , want their kid to experience it (in this case), or to make a few xtra bucks. I don't know if it is ignorance or just not caring about the ramifications or a combo of the 2.

The lady sounds crazy, irresponsible, and should have had sense to know a pit bull (or any intact male dog) + a child + a dog in heat are a bad combo. Intact male dogs go crazy around dogs in heat, but of course spaying these days seems to be the last option on people's minds for some reason. Intact male dogs in many cases can get so aggressive when a female in heat is around. I wonder why the news media doesn't even mention that, for a second.

Sounds to me like this lady had no idea what she was doing. When you have a Pit you have to be very careful with it. They can be terrific animals (All the ones i've had were great), but they are not for the casual pet owner. Most of my Pits were strictly outside/basement dogs. I don't trust pits around kid's either, no matter how sweet they are.

This lady had her ideas bass ackwards. She's worried about her dogs tearing up bags of clothes? Bring the fucking bags of clothes upstairs and put the dogs DOWNstairs. If your kid won't listen to you, buy a lock for the dog room if you have Pits. She sounds like an idiot if you ask me.
