    General Chemistry question

OK so I'm doing my homework and I have a really lame question...hopefully somebody who knows their chemistry can help...I need to determine the oxidation number for N in
    (NH4)2SO4

Since SO4 has a charge of -2 and there are 2 NH4's with a charge of +1, am I right for saying N has a charge of 2?

I clicked on this thread thinking it probably had something to do with male-female relationships. I'm obviously in the wrong forum.

I was hoping I could lend a hand in making one of those little table top volcanoes. Those are always fun.

Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

If I remember my chemistry classes...

    S04, negative 2
H, always positive 1, Outways all other 'normal oxidation states' or some such.

So the total of two two NH4 has to be +2 to cancel out the -2 charge of SO4 considering that the things are bonded. So they each make one.

We’ve got 8 Hs and 2 Ns then. So the 8Hs give us +8, the two Ns need to give us –6 to create a total of +2. So each N has to be –3?

Though I think this is coming a day late. And two years since I took inorganic chemistry.

I knew what the subject was gonna be, and I clicked anyway just to tease the ol brain a bit with the forumlas. Course I'm not a chem girl so I have no idea. My high school chem class was a LONG time ago! Now I just feel like I need to go back to school!

I passed chemistry by sitting at the same lab table with the geeky boys.

well thanks for the responses everybody I think Eques got it right with -3.

Ana I'm not too sure, are you adding water to the reactant to yield some product? I was just trying to determine an oxidation number now you've got me all confused!

I'll be sure to post back and ask for help if I do make a table top volcano.

    Yep- Enques got it.
I think the water thing is because (NH4)2SO4 is a salt, but is normally used in aqueous solution...

I never took chemistry so you might as well ask me how to say "fuck you" in Farsi. Sorry I didn't read your thread sooner or I could have asked my brother who was a chemistry genius in school. He actually hung out with his chemistry teacher in high school. Guess who got the brains in my family.

Well it's too late to post an answer to your question, so here's some geeky humor.....

    Here's to poor old Jonny,
    For Jonny is no more,
For what he thought was H2O,
    Was H2SO4!

Best of luck in your chem class.

LSM- I was told to leave chemistry after I almost blew up the classroom (and no, I am not kidding).. so I can't help you.. :-( The teacher who taught me is still there, and believe it or not, if you look really closely at the lab table, you can see where the doors at the bottom were blown off.. LOL.... I misread the formula.. scored a boyfriend instead.

    ^^LOL omg!!!

    cute chem rhyme too.
    OK, here's another one:

Now, I know that a non metal oxide and a base will yield a salt and water. BUT for the life of me I can't figure out what sort of salt Se2O and NaOH will make.

    So in other words... Se2O + NaOH ----> H2O + ???

    Sodium Selenate???

ok, if anybody cares I've decided it's Na2SeO4. I hope I didn't just pull some brand new made up compound out of my hat. Now I get to balance it. yay.
