    all oil has externalized costs...pollution, pipeline subsidies, eminent domain, contract bias, diplomatic and military support, tax breaks and outright payments to companies, discounted leases on production fields, discounted loans for equipment, federal GIS/survey teams providing free assistance, etc....

    all nations do it, it's called "national security"

    again I'll ask, where do the 'externalized costs' lie in regard to imported oil from Canada or South America ? They obviously aren't receiving direct US gov't subsidies/services in the forms you mentioned which might apply to US domestic oil producers on leased/eminent domained US lands. They obviously aren't receiving a huge commitment of US military forces to essentially guard oil fields and pipelines as you imply is the case in the middle east. ???
