    Default Ban on Flag Burning

It seems as though the republicans are trying to wrap themselves around the flag again on this one. We can all probably agree that the flag should never be burnt, but isn't your right to burn the flag (if you so choose) one of things that is really great about this country? Why is this even an issue anyways? Aren't there more pressing matters that congress could/should be working on?

    Idiocy.

This will never become law; it won't get 2/3rds of the states even if it passes the Senate, which is debateable.

Um, a technical correction, CO. Yes, it's idiocy. The two-thirds has to do with amendment proposals, either by both houses of Congress or the number of state legislatures; but it would need to be ratified by three-fourths of the states for adoption.

And I don't see it happening. And, yes, there's far more important things to worry about. The Constitution is meant to be guiding principles for governing the nation, not deciding on flavor-of-the-month issues.

They can waste their time on stuff that won't ever pass (note how it comes to the senate after the 4th of July.)

Keeps them from making new stupid laws and spending my money.

(And if it does pass - then I will be forming my own political party - because the day a peice of cloth - even if it is a symbol of this country and it's rights and greatness - has more rights than I - that is no good man... no good.)

Hehe...I knew that...but was making the point that they wouldn't be able to garner more than a base majority in favor of the amendment, particularly in light of red/blue divisions regionally.

CO may be over optimistic. As a quote from the article says.
Rep. James Sensenbrenner, a Wisconsin Republican, spoke in favor of the measure, saying, "All 50 state legislatures have passed resolutions calling on Congress to pass a flag protection amendment, and polls demonstrate the overwhelming majority of Americans have consistently supported a flag protection amendment.
While this is in different forms in each state, and was done at different times, it is not that unlikely when the pols are running for re-election.

Be aware that the press version of flag-burning is not correct. The text of the amendment says
    THE AMENDMENT
''The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.''
It is desecration, not burning. A ceremonial burning is in fact the correct way to end a damaged flag.

Personally, I feel that flagburning is an act of treason, and I would gladly punch a flagburner in the face if I saw them do it. If you love your country (any country) you should respect it's flag, regardless of how you feel about your current administration and it's policies.

I also feel that bans are wrong, as they rarely solve the problems they are intended to, and infringe upon everyone's freedom in the process. It should be left up to the people to decide individually whether acting a certain way or owning/using a certain object is right in their particular situation.

I KNOW it's wrong to burn the flag. I don't need the government to tell me that. I KNOW ephedrine, cocaine, marijuana, MDMA, and heroin are generally not good for me and do more harm than good. Some people may enjoy them and have no significant problems in their lives as a result of using such drugs. Good for them. The government shouldn't ban them either. People should decide for themselves.

I hate flagburning, but there may come a day when something I don't hate faces being banned. If we allow a ban now we open the door to more bans later.
