    Ear Candling

Has anyone ever tried this. I am getting over an ear infection/bronchitis and someone swears this is the best thing ever. I looked it up online, it just seems so strange (and a little scary).

Just wanted to hear peoples experiences before I try it out. Does it really work or is it just some kind of crazy bs?

My boyfriend swears by it too . He convinced me to try it for an ear that had been bothering me (felt clogged or something). Long story short, it helped, but 6 months later, I'm ready for a repeat. It's just a hollow tube made of wax saturated fabric that you pop in your ear (while your laying down) and light on fire. It makes a suction while it burns, that pulls any debris or wax out of your ear. You have to make sure to do it with another person, so they can dump the ash every now and then, and make sure you don't get burnt. I liked it personally.

I used to work at a health food store and I picked some up to try. What I did was cut a hole in a paper plate so it would catch the ashes. I should do that again soon. My ears feel clogged from swimming all the time.

I've done it several times, and I liked it. You won't believe how much wax comes out of your ears. Your ear will produce more, but I think it's good to clean it all out every now and then.

these things are great! god, i have very small ears, but lots of crap in them. traditional ear washes didnt work- it pushed stuff further in. ear candles suck it out.

Okay, I looked this up, because I found it hard to believe that a candle could A) create a vacuum strong enough to pull out such thick and viscous material, and B) that such a strong vacuum wouldn't rupture one's eardrum. As it turns out, such is the case. All the crap in the candle is from the candle itself, not your ear. Many, many people have just sealed the candle into a sterile jar, and the same waxy, viscous substance accumulates. Sorry, but no it doesn't work. To be fair to the holistic health field, I've never had one holistic health person tell me that they work. They pretty much all told me that they were very impressed with all the gunk, but that they couldn't say that they actually heard better afterward.

Plus - your ears are meant to have wax. That is why your ears produce wax. Wax in your ears is a good thing. If you have excessive wax, the best thing is to add a bit of oil to your ears, which is loosen the excess wax, and just allow it fall on out naturally. Or you can try a Chinese Ear Spoon. They are between 50 and 89 cents, and are just little tiny spoons that you sort of scoop out wax with.

A friend of mine uses that all the time! My mom says she knows about it, but it's "dangerous" lol. I want to give it a try though, I heard you can get them from ethnic stores.

I agree! Our ears are self cleansing. We need ear wax to prevent dirt and such from getting in.

However whenyou mix water (swimming) with our ears, you can get earaches, also known as swimmers ear, or get a cold and keep blowing you're nose which pushes the water more into the ear, resulting in an infection.

What my mother used ALWAYS for me as i always had an earache, mainly after swimming or a cold, was the hair dryer on warm heat, and held it far enough away from my ear, but aimed at the inside a tad. This warm heat dries up any water that is trapped against the ear wax and stops the bacteria from growing!!!! Dry ears are the way to go, but pulling out ear wax.....Hmm i don't know, i have heard of it, but i think we really need that wax more than we think, it's not what makes us sick with earaches. It's the water that gets trapped inside the ear, and builds up bacteria, i.e. infection.

I pour Peroxide in my ears, that's pretty much what they putin them in the doctor's office. It bubbles up and kills and of the infection that's in there, plus it doesn't hurt.
I went partially deaf as a child and am very careful with my ears now, the peroxide works wonders and gets rid of any pain I have.

If you think you have a buildup of wax in your ears you can just go to the drug store and get a wax softner like Debrox, or Murine even a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil, and glycerin will soften ear wax. If you think it's clog (eww gross picture came to my mind) which could happen go to your doctor and if it's truely clog they will remove it via ear wash with part regular luke warm water and part hydrogen peroxide or vaccum and maybe give you a prescribed wax softener.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I just want to tell everyone to be very, very careful of taking care of "excess" wax problems at home...by themselves. The eardrum is quite delicate and if you do not know what you are doing and start digging around in the ear trying to get stuff out...you could end up puncturing your ear drum...and that starts a whole other list of problems.

MOST wax doesn't bother people...however, if you find that you are having discomfort with the wax against the ear drum or anything like that...you are better off using hydrogen peroxide and rinsing with warm water using an ear bulb. Actually STICKING something in your ear is not a good idea...especially if you are trying to get wax that is actually touching the ear drum.

Ladies, I have ruptured my ear drum before.. I had a horrible ear infection in high school which cause my ear drum to burst.. I was told that NEVER to stick anything in your ears.. even a q-tip.. better off going to the doc to have it removed.

sorry but it DOES work. i dont know where you guys got your info. my husband has oily skin and builds wax. a commercial ear wax remover does not work for him.
you dont stick the candle deep in the ear only at the opening. when you cool the "candle" and cut it open it is FULL OF EAR WAX there is no way in hell that came from the candle. it's clearly from the ear. does he do it all the time no. once or twice a year and it works. no way this could punture your ear drum. some peoples ears need it some dont

Thanks... I love this site. I can always find an answer to questions. I'm going to try it. WTF do I have to lose? I am going to whole foods tommorrow to buy some. I will see for myself. They are cheap so it wont be a big investment if it doesn't work. But if it does....

I love them, and as for the "they don't work", here's my 2 cents:

Yes, the candles are made of wax. However, when burned, the candle wax is a powdery, white/cream substance. The earwax however, is (usually, depends on the person) orange-y. The candles work wonderfully for me. I use a paper plate/foil to catch the ashes, and keep a wet washcloth and a bucket of water nearby while I'm doing it.

My father is an alternative medicine doctor, and I've used them a number of times in my life, and Yes they definitally do work and they are not dangerous. Although some of the wax that will be collected inside the candle will come from the candle, a lot of it will come from your ear. I know this for a fact because I was used to getting a certain amount collected in the candle, and then when I was having some ear problems after I had a serious head injury suddenly I was getting about four times as much and it really helped.

The best way to do it is to stick the candle through a small hole in a paper plate, this will prevent any ash falling on you, and put a pillow under your head to position your head so that the candle is standing straight up. Have a bowl of water near by, as well as some tongs and a pair of sissors. Then everytime the candle has burned down have your friend hold the black, burned part of it with the tongs, cut belown the tongs leaving the candle still on fire, and then take the part of the candle that was just cut off and put it in the water bowl to put it out. Then when the candle has burned almost down to the paper plate use the tongs to take the rest of the candle out of your ear, and put it out in the bowl of water. Good luck

I've seen my boyfriends mom do it to his brother, any "earwax" that you see on the paper afterwards is the wax from the candle, if the candle made a strong enough suction to pull out earwax it would rupture your eardrum. think about it..... earwax is really sticky stuff. You would be pulling your brain through your ear if you could actually find something that sucked hard enough to get the wax out.

I agree with the one post by gypsy about hydrogen peroxide. My mom is a nurse and anytime I've ever had an ear ache from swimmers ear/wax buildup my mom would have me lay on my side and pour a lil peroxide in. It itches like a mother, and bubbles up, but that's a GOOD sign, that it's actually cleaning your ears. When your done, tilt your head and let it run out then use either a syringe or one of the bulbs to flush warm water slowly in and get all the crap out. It works the best, my ears always feel so much better after I do that (I have small ears and am CONSTANTLY getting swimmers ear!)

Okay, as a scientific experiment (because I will confess, that I did not perform it myself - I was told and I read from people who did) why don't a few people here try burning the ear candles in a sealed jar, rather than your ear, and see what accumulates? Or maybe try one with a runny substance and one with a heavy viscous substance? I will personally take on the jar. Anyone else want in on the ear wax experiment?

My aunt, a chiropratic nurse, convinced me to try one to get rid of a nasty ear infection. You should only stick it in a little bit (like just barely at the opening). It was definitely better afterward. I'd already tried those bulb thingys the dr. recommended and it hadn't done anything except put water in my ear. I guess native americans used them as well; they just took a long leaf and burned the end until the the leaf was halfway. Supposedly, the smoke loosens the wax in your ear without bothering the eardrum, so it just drains it. It doesn't necessarily create a vaccuum to draw it out.
...and the day came, when the risk it took to remain closed in a bud became worse than the risk it took to blossom.

did you not read the other posts? the wax in the candle IS NOT from the candle it is the color of ear wax. clearly diffrent from the candle. yes earwax is sticky but not when it dries. the "vaccumm" (acutally as stated above its draining the wax) is NO WHERE near enough to rupture your eardrum... sheesh

your ears feel better after using the ear candles it that the smoke soothes the pain.... it doesnt remove ear wax

BUT if you want to remove ear wax just go to a "doc in the box" - like Med 7 or whatever. $100 and theyll use a big syringe and wash out your ears with warm water. Its gross when you look in the bowl afterwards and see all the nasty wax but feels good when theyre doing it and feels great afterwards. Think i may go have this done next week... hmmmm...
