    Default veins collapsing?

ok.. 3rd try to get blood at the doc office and my veins just WONT GIVE IT UP!

what is going on!!?? Not to mention i get stuck like 4 or 5 times and i feel sick to my stomach and look pale the whole time. My mom even had trouble taking my blood!!! I need this blood for important tests on my thyroid!

What am i doing wrong? I have small veins and i am a very petite girl. I drank like 6 glasses of water before going so its not that i am dehydrated!

dehydration and malnourishment are the most common cause of collapsing or breaking veins

Try loading up on water the day before you get blood taken... drinking it right before you go to the dr's wont give the water enough time to work it's way into your system.

i dont get it.. i drank my ass off last night too..

She said not to eat after 8.

Im thinking it was mostly because i was so damn cold in her office! It couldnt be malnourishment b/c when i was 60 lbs sick they had no problem getting blood from me weekly...

My mother works for the american red cross, so I decided to call her up on this one. ( Now that I think about it though, what a weird reason to call my mother) Anyway she said it is also common for that to happen if you don't have enough iron in your body. Maybe take an iron pill the day before and drink lots and lots of water.

. Next time you can suggest to have the tourniquet put on and you can pump your fist for a little while like 30 seconds, or a Blood pressure cuff can help in this situation. Then maybe a few little vein slaps to bring it up. Even sometimes a warm compress helps. Also maybe a smaller gauge needle like a butterfly needle.
I'm not sure about taking Iron a day before a blood draw, I guess that's a question to ask your physician that's ordering the test.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

wow, thanks for doing that! I would totally try that idea, but one of the tests include an iron test. I wondering if taking that supplement would compromise my results?

Yes, it would compromise the results. Don't do it.

Talk with your doctor about what you can do for the next draw. Do not take anything unless they give you the ok.

    Good luck!

I've had them have trouble on me too but they can always get it. For some reason my right arm works better than the left. I thought veins usually collapsed on junkies from overuse. I'm obviously not saying you're a junkie but that's just the only time I've ever heard of that happening. My dog is 8.4 pounds and had to be on an IV this past weekend and they had no trouble getting that in which amazed me!!!! Her leg is like the size of a chicken leg. Maybe you should try getting a veterinarian to do it!

Have you had your blood taken since you were sick, underweight and getting weekly blood tests? Sounds to me that THAT whole ordeal may be the culprit...

yes.. when i was sick... that was back when i was like 12-15... Well being so sick(deathly thin) from anorexia. I actually didnt kick the problem into much later.

But no.. lol, IM FAR from a junkie!(ask tampadancer, she knows me!) The only thing iv'e touched in my life is vicoden. But that was a one time perscription that i needed!Little weed when i was a kid. (maybe 4 times total) MY father (6'3 235 all muscle) has problems giving blood too because of veins collapsing.

It doesnt help that im freaked out by needles. To the point of feeling nausiated and sick. I had to take a break after the nurse had her first try with me. Maybe she was havng trouble b/c i was so freaked out?

The only thing i am on is doxycycline for my skin right now and straterra(concerta) for ADD. (just started)

My veins always roll on me when I go to the doc...
they have to take my blood from various areas of my body.

When I was a child it was so bad they had to give me an IV in my temple!

They will have to find a better spot to draw from

ive never had a problem with IV'S by the way .. after my surgeries and before they had no problem getting them in.. But i think that may be different from getting blood out?

Oh and btw, my vein will give a little bit of blood, but out of nowhere collapse!

Sorry about the 10 messages after, i should have edited my posts... oh well.

    Well I cant do either.
I am unable to donate blood for that very reason.

There will be some place in your body that they can draw from.
You might discuss this with a Lab Tech
