Default redheads and tanning beds don't mix!

The tanning salon toasted me. It doesn't look too bad. I am a pretty shade of pink and I was smart enough to leave my pasties on so I didn't get burnt nipples. However, this is the most PAINFUL burn I have ever had! I can't sleep and every thing that touches me makes me want to jsut jump out of my skin.

Has this eer happened to anybody else? How do you cool the burn?

I am also a redhead and have burned very badly in the past. I take Advil (or any other anti-inflammatory) and use aloe that has been refrigerated. Also, I found a self tanner that is amazing! Phytomer (found at Sephora) is very easy to use, and gives a really good color to fair skinned ladies. Just make sure to apply it to the wrist area with a make-up sponge, so it blends well.

Colleen, how long did you stay in for?

The first week I went, the people there wouldn't let me stay in for more than 3 minutes. Make sure you take things super slow.

The put me in for 12 minutes. It didn't sound like that much! What do I know? I thought the tanning bed people were supposed to know what they were doing.

    Holy cow!!!

I've been going for nearly two months and I'm still not even going in for more than 10. And I got nice and dark too!!

No wonder you are in pain!

OMG I can't believe they put you in for 12 fucking minutes!!!

I am waaaaaay darker than you I have olive skin and my first time in the booth at the new salon they would only put me in for 10!!! (to see how my skin reacted) Last time I tanned I went in for 15.

If you continue to tan, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE where they know what they're doing!

I thought you were going to say you burned in like 3 minutes! I'm shocked that they put a fair redhead in for 12. totally shocked!

I am a fair skinned redhead. I only did a few tanning sessions for my Junior prom. That was about 5 years ago. I remember getting nice color but itching like hell at night! Anyway , I have not had any luck with self-tanners since then. I compare them to my luck with guys. At first I think it is wonderful.... then it dissapoints me. I have tried many different kinds. I think I just have to keep practicting my application techniques. I may convert to the beds again. What do you ladies think is a good number of times I should go a week? And from what i already learned.. i guess about 5 minutes would work? Also, I am concerned about freckling. Last time I went I remeber it darkened my freckles. I am happy right now because I only have light brownish freckles that mesh well with my skin. Any suggestions on keeping them that way in the booths?

When I used to tan I had to start with a very short time and slowly build. Yes I burned a couple times and it sucked ass! The refrigerated aloe gel helps soothe alot!

However I've given up on tanning. My skin is too fair, it takes too much time to get any color and all that is too damaging to the skin. I'd rather be pale and have nice skin when I'm 40 than be tan but leathery.

im sure most of you all do this anyways, but my sister in law has very very sensitive facial skin, because of microdermabrasion, and when she tans she puts a towel over her face.. it makes perfect sense... you can always tan your face with foundation and bronzer, and you wont get wrinkly(er, in my case, lol) at all!

OH my god... never trust the tanning salon people... most are close to being retarded. It makes me so mad when tanning salon people know better to put some one in for a lot longer than they should and happen to forget they put in new bulbs.
Type your own skin http://www.californiatan.com/tanbasi...skin_type.ehtm and go under the bed manufactor's listed time for your skin type (this is usually on the side of the bed) then slowly very slowly increase your time. Now since you are burnt, which I would complain to the tanning salon management/ owner about, all you can do is baby your skin and not tan until all the pink is gone and if you start to peel do not tan until all the peeling is gone. The best option now is the aloe gel with the lidocaine (in the suncare area of the drug store) , tylenol , and make sure you stay hydrated. I'm so sorry your tanning experience was like this... I would let the salon management/onwer know what happened.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

    Ow, girl!

Skin soothers: Noxema skin creme, black tea, and ice water baths.

You know what's funny, I tan well, BUT I have a Celt somewhere in the family tree ancestry, so I get freckles, moles and my skin starts looking "gnarly" after too much sun. No one really gets away with excessive tanning.

$aph,a lot of people that work in tanning salons don't know jack.Remember the thread where the guy at the salon told the girl she could put a tingle lotion on her face???Most of them are idiots.

Oh yeah, about the freckling. Tanning always brings out my freckles more, makes the regular ones darker and brings out smaller 'new' ones as well. If I don't tan you can only see the ones on my shoulders and down upper my arms, but if I tan they're visible ALL down my arms, nose/cheeks and thighs. I don't like it.

Go back to that tanning salon, get your fucking money back...file a complaint with the manager and then tell them that you are filing a complaint with the BBB (or wherever).

I'm with Saph...when I was tanning, I went in for the MAX of 10-12 minutes (and I've got a natural tan to start with). AND, the last time I was in a tanning bed was 5 years ago...and they didn't have the "super" beds that they do now...where you only need to be in for 6-8 minutes. Holy cow.

Aloe gel works very well. You're in luck cuz it's summer and you can find this stuff anywhere. Taking an anti-inflammatory is good, as well.

If you start to peel...DO NOT PEEL THE SKIN. It's tempting, but let it slough off on it's own. Otherwise, you could peel up some skin that is not ready.

But, go back to the salon and get your money back, rip them a new asshole and bitch to the management...or call their corporate and complain. Unacceptable.

I'm a red head as well. When it comes to sun I do believe that i'm at least half vampire. When you get burnt to a crisp take a nice long bath warm bath in vineger.Just add a whole bunch to your water and soak.If you can stand it poor the vineger strait on the burn. When you get out gently towl off and rub down with olive oil. After the oil soaks in use chilled aloe.It may take two baths but it really works. They only side effect is you'll freeze your ass off afterward.
