Default I need tips for travelling in Europe

    Details-

Spending 16 days between Paris, Barcelona, and Rome.

Have hotels picked out, don't need help there.

What kind of shoes should I buy? I am planning on doing a LOT of walking while there, so I want comfort, but want to blend in and not look TOO American. I'm thinking a pair of nice sandals and some sort of walking/athletic shoe.

    Safety tips?

Etiquette/language tips? I speak rudimentary Spanish, but in Barcelona I understand they speak Catalan, so I'm not sure if that helps. Should I worry about language problems, or just learn a few simple phrases?

    Anything else?

Get one of those Let's Go or Lonely Planet books.

I can tell you everything and anything, but later, I need to go to bed.

Spanish is spoken in Barcelona, don't worry about Catalan, everyone speaks standard Castillano as well.

White sneakers and a bright colored internal frame backpack scream US TOURIST. You don't want that. Wear dark colored sneakers or light hiking boots.

Don't tell anyone you are from US. Tell them you are Canadian. Trust me on this one....

Keep your money and passport in one of those little storage belts that go under your pants....

    More later.

Smile a lot and......well, how can I say this, don't look or take an attitude of superiority. And be cautious in asking where the bathroom is.

Kat covered all the basics. Now, my experience has been that as soon as you open your mouth, and either attempt the native language, or speak English, they'll be able to tell you're an American (and I mean USA, not "North American") whether you identify yourself as one or not. But I would still keep a low profile.

Having a few basic phrases (asking for directions, how to say "please" and "thank you", etc.) should get you by fine. Most people speak English well enough to help you (in the sense that their English will be better than your speaking their language).

I recommend Camper Shoes.....they are so comfortable. They're my little Catalan peasant shoes and if you go to Barcelona you'll get props for wearing them. There is even a Camper Hotel in Barcelona:

Tell people that you're from Toronto or Calgary. It's not so much the Spanish and Catalans you have to worry about; it's your fellow Dutch, English, and Australian travelers. They'll want to start an argument as soon as they find out you're American. Who has time to be an apologist for American foreign policy when he is on vacation?

Make sure you tell us about your trip when you come back!
