    Default What's Animal Control for?

    Hey guys,
I just came back from a harrowing hour long frightmare.
It started on this great little island that had a bridge thatI take my dogs to a few times a month.

As I am walking back I am warned that a little dog is attacking other dogs and to watch out. It turns out that a 15lb feisty and VERY horny male rat terrier was running around attacking girl dogs. I came upon it attacking a 9 lb puppy and drawing blood because the girl wouldn't give it up so to speak.

Well, this dog starts to follow my girl dogs and I get a little worried, until I see he has no collar and is shaking uncontrollably, this thing was FREAKED out.

I call the police who tell me they will send someone right away. Well, this dog is still with me so I attach one of leashes to him, hold onto my itty bitty dog and go over the bridge to wait for the "police."
Well, they aren't there. I was told they would send someone from animal control right away. RIGHT.
So I call animal control, they are closed, I call their emergency number. I am told I will be paiged "soon." About 45 mins has gone by with NO ONE showing up.
Animal control finally calls and says that they can't send anyone until tomorrow at 8 am. I tell that this boy dog is going around attacking other dogs, I can't bring it home, I don't want to leave it there because it might get hurt or hurt something else. I offer to take it the police station, they say no. Then I am told, "Just leave it there, it won't go far and we'll pick it up tomorrow." It is only 7pm, but the dog won't go far by 8 in the freaking morning?

What the hell? Do they think lost, scared and abandoned animals just wait around until 8 to be rescued?

All this time I am on the phone my boy friend is trying to find someone who would like the dog. It's a grat looking dog and is friendly with me, let me give him water and slip the leash over him and then followed me for the mile it took to get over the bridge.

A woman finally walks up, admiring my girls, my boy friend is holding on to them to keep them away from the boy dog, just in case. Well she loves my little dog and then he offers the boy dog to her. She takes one look at it and says, "oh yes, please!." Asks if he has a name yet, I say no, she takes that leash from me and walks away calling him Spud.

I ask you where is Animal Control when you need them, desperately need them.
If it was a snake or a bear, would they wait till 8 since it won't go far?
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

lol, oh how tempting it was! I think I just can't go over the fact that I was told that , "it can't get far." It just seems cruel.
Trust me, if that woman hadn't come along the dog would still be going home with me, but I would have to lock him in a room to keep him off my girls. He had a red rocket the whole time I had him with me.
I also want to say that I knew that since it was a "small" dog it would immediately be adopted. I've worked at the SPCA and they are the first to go, I just didn't want the dog to get attacked by an angry owner if the dog went too far.

Actually, I just have to say...Animal control wasn't there cuz this other lady was meant to get this little dog.

I don't like Animal Control. They do the whole Euthanasia with animals. Next time, call your local no-kill shelter. They'll give you a place you can take animals 24/7.

Animal control sucks. BTW...why do they call it animal control if they don't control animals? They just pick them up (sometimes) so shouldn't they be "Animal Pick-up if the time and day are right"?

Glad to hear that the dog turned out ok, though.

wtf animal control in your area really sucks. I'm a huge fan of animals being treated properly and that was horrible. I kinda feel bad for the dog.

I tell ya where i live it's ALOT different. They would have NEVER said leave the dog. Who the hell knows if the dog was rabid atacking other dogs as was told to you, and you told animal control.

I think they need to be reported to the local newspaper perhaps.

Actually we have animal "law enforcement" They can fine you and Call police on the spot and have you taken to jail.

Our Animal control for the county is VERY strict. They highly enforce the "leash law" for our dogs and cats!!!

Sorry that happened to you, hope the lady was the original owner (ya never know) or treats this little dog right.

My cat is leash trained. ^-^ I take her to the beach because the beach says 'No god on Beach'... nothing about cats! And my kitten loves to play in the sand.

Edit: Dogs.... Dogs! haha funny typo.

Had they done their job, that pup would have gone to a pound, and probably would have had its life terminated. You showed concern and kindness. Both of you were rewarded. Well done.

The no-kill shelter in my area does not take dogs on the spot. There is a waiting list for them to take in any animal, plus they pick and choose from the pound themselves. It's nice that they are no-kill, BUT they really only take the best from the litter.
This dog was small, a great breed (def pure bred), great personality and just all around precious. they do VERY well in this area and he wouldn't have been terminated, of this I am sure.
I only called animal control because EVERYTHING else was closed. All the shelters, all the emergency, EVERYTHING. I couldn't bring the dog home for fear of my own dos, but I would have if that woman hadn't stopped by. I don't think it was her dog because who ever owned it, DIDN"T care. That dog had been there for hours from what I was told by people leaving the area.
But, I am glad it all worked out, I felt really scared about the dog and no way in hell would it stay there. I wish there was a different organization to call, but I am at a loss her in the uncaring city.

I must add that I am also so so so glad my own dogs were on leashes, they always are, but it's tempting to let them free in such a "harmless" area. I don't know how many other dogs were attacked, but I know it made people think twice about letting their babies loose and made them remember how special their pets are.
