Default *Sigh* Trying To Find a Roommate...

So I've been planning for a while to move back to New York City. Unfortunately I won't be able to do this on my own (not just yet) and would need to find a roommate. I've been looking around craigslist.com, but am very wary of all the listings because apparently a lot of them turn out to either be scams, dangerous situations, or something along those lines.

I haven't started dancing yet, but am planning on doing so as soon as I can find a place to live. Which brings up another problem - the line of work I'm looking to get into. Most people look for "professional, 9-5 job" types for potential roommates - needless to say that won't be me. Not to mention, many just aren't comfortable with having a dancer for a roommate because of all the preconceptions about the industry and the people in it.

Right now I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Any ideas? Suggestions? Advice? It's all greatly appreciated.

my roomate was a friend of mine and also danced, but at a different club. i would try and gather up good references- this helps and may let the potentials see past your work hours. you could tell them you waitress at a strip club or are a shooter girl. my old landlord is a great reference for me. i would avoid listings for roomies: you really dont know who these people are. if you do choose this route, do a background check on the person. you deserve to know who you're living with. maybe try and talk a friend into moving to nyc with you or call up anyone you know there and see if they know of someone you could room with. and again, even screen these people carefully. my strict rules have cut out many troublemakers for living situations. any advice, feel free to pm me.

The landlord wouldn't be a problem because like you said, I can just say that I'm a waitress or an independent contractor or something like that.

But I don't have any friends that are looking to room with anybody...in fact I don't know many people there and I DON'T want to go back to my family.

Heh, I'd love to room with one of these fabulous gals here at SW that live in or around NYC.

Have you considered living outside of Manhattan
    Jersey City can be cheaper
Williamsburg Brroklyn - I used to live there
Hoboken, NJ - I lived there also
    Astoria Queens - Good Food

Also on craigslist you could look for a sublet. When were you thinking of moving and how much you willing to spend. I can keep my ears open for ya since I live here.

    Welcome back.

Thanks, it's going to be so GOOD going back (at least I hope!).

I'm also looking in Williamsburg and Park Slope, as well as parts of Queens that have easy access to the City.

I'm able to move as early as next week, so it's really a matter of finding an apartment at this point - that's the only thing holding me back right now. I can do about $1000 a month but that's really at the high end of the budget. I'd be more comfortable at around $800.

Thanks for keeping an eye out for me, it's really appreciated.

I searched for my current roommate off of my schools website to find a roommate. All seemed well for the first month. She is psycho - I am subleasing my room in a month. She doesn't know I dance, and I figured why should I tell her, I don't bring home anyone from the club, I don't fit the stereotypes. Anyways she hates strippers and voices her opinions often. I just told her I was a waitress at a night club around here. Besides that she doesn't respect my property at all, and will NOT buy anything (garbage bags, dish soap, furniture - I mean ANY thing) for our apartment. That is up to me (sorry - I'm very bitter right now, can you tell?)

    Anyways beware of internet roommates!

Please do. My bf's coworker's mother was just stabbed 17 times because the guy she moved in with was on some gang's hit list. When he wasn't home, they murdered her instead.

Please be VERY careful who you shack up with!!!!!

Someone already here mentioned, you may want to check into the apartmnets in NJ. Towns in NJ that are near Manhattan, NY. Some are cheap. Jersey City I think maybe the cheapest.

    Good Luck sweety.

Thank you! And I'm still lookin'!

And I'm extremely wary of internet roommates...I really don't want to go that route, so we'll see what happens.
