prozac worked really well for me when i used it about 10 yrs ago. Effexor not well at all.

I have no doubt that it would work for me now but im a little concerned about gaining weight as a side effect.

I took prozac a few years ago after going through a really bad breakup with a guy. I was on it about two years. I tried Effexor too and couldn't tolerate it at all and felt like I was going to jump out of my skin from one dose. I think the Prozac helped me but I was also in therapy so I'm not sure how much was the Prozac and how much the therapy. I know I did gain weight but again, don't know if it was the Prozac or the fact that my schedule changed and I was unable to excercise as much and ate more fast food. I know that I had NO sex drive whatsoever (could have been due to the breakup too) and I felt like totally happy just sitting home and doing nothing. When I went off of it I had a few episodes of flipping out. I did wean off of it like my doctor said but I still had these flashes where I'd get really enraged. It was pretty scary to me. Then it stopped happening after about a month and I was fine. When I first started taking it it took about 3 days for my body to adjust to being on it so I guess it just took a while to adjust to being off of it. All in all I think it did help me though. There were so many factors involved it's hard to say what was Prozac and what was other stuff.

Not a doctor, so I can't really say much. Used it when I was a child. Stopped using it about 6 years ago. Basically, it's an anti -depressant drug. As to me being successful, I don't know. I really did not know what it was back then.
I still get depressed bad. Get negative emotions. Maybe I need to go back on it.
Only thing I remeber as a child after taking it that I did not feel so bad.
You should go see a doctor about it.

Basically, when I took it, I felt more confident, more assertive, and became more socially active. But I was only 14 year old at that time.

But not everything is perfect, there are side effects, such as making people who took it more suicidal. Yeah, my experience was that when the drug wore off, I fell into a dump again.

Anyhow, I got off it, and everyday, I get at least an hour of meditation, and exercise while I am running. Mediatate while you run. Seems to work for me.

But every case is different. I went off of it without a doctor's permission. I may still need it. However, I have performed adequately in this career for this long without it. But tomorrow I may be dead. Everything in life is a risk.

I'm on the generic version of Prozac right now, and it is working wonders for me. I also tried Effexor, and Wellbutrin, and Zoloft, and Celexa. Nothing has worked for me except Prozac. The side effects are a pain in the ass, but they went away after two months. I started my Prozac because of anitsocial behavior, and depression related to dancing. Prozac has COMPLETELY changed things around for me. You'll be AMAZED how much of a difference it can make. It's hard to be positive when you have NO seratonin flowing in your brain. But once the prozac kicked in, I was able to be more of a problem solver rather than depressed all the time. And when bad things happen, or dancing starts to get me down, all it takes is a bubble bath or a night out with the girls to refresh me, whereas six months ago when I was depressed, all I wanted to do was hole up in the house, and I was just as depressed the next day. Prozac has really helped change my life, no b.s. I hate to sound so PRO-PROZAC!!! But I have to say, I didn't want to take meds, for personal reasons. And I was a skeptic. But I'm glad I got past my stubborness and tried it. It's great. I've never banked this much before in my four years of dancing!!!! Good luck to you!

One of my exs was a manic depressive who was on prozac. Did wonders for his anti-social and reclusive behaviors. A gal I worked with was on prozac but was really feeling the sexual side effects. I recommended that she ask her doc if welbutrin would work for her. I used that in the past to quit smoking and I loved it! Not only did it help with the smoking but it also took the edge off and I didn't even know there was an edge! It kinda curbs compulsivness so I found that I also lost weight because I wasn't eating out of boredom. The best part was my orgasms were fantastic.

Anyway, the gal I recommended it to has been on it for 8 months now and she loves it, too.

You might try some mood enchancing herbal supplements. I don't remember the name of the one I took a couple years back, but if you go to a "natural" store I'm sure they could help. It seemed to help me, however it may have just been that placebo effect going on, ya know?!

I've been on Prozac and Welbutrin. Prozac worked fine for me, but it's well known to diminsh sexual desire. Welbutrin is reported to impact fewer people that way, which is true for me so I like it better, but everyone's different. Prozac also seemed to keep me too "propped up." For instance, I wouldn't have been able to cry at a funeral. The effects of Welbutrin seem to be more subtle for me.

Prozac also can make some people very angry. I know someone who was depressed and supressing her anger, but started lashing out at family and friends with frank descriptions of how she really felt once she went on the drug. You know, it's not good to keep that stuff bottled up, but a full tilt into the opposite direction wasn't a desireable resolution, so her doctor prescribed something else.

That's an example of why you need to give your prescribing doctor feedback about how it's effecting you. It may take a little time to adjust to certain small side effects, but if they bother you too much, there are alternatives, such as adjusting the dosage or trying something else altogether. I can't remember the anti-depressant, but one of the others I tried gave me incredibly vivid technicolor dreams. It also occasionally made me feel like my conciousness was dislodged from my body for a moment. Neither side effect was all that bad but combined, they freaked me out a bit, so I told the doc to get me off of it. Surprisingly, some people won't speak up when a medication impacts them negatively.

And they say therapy coupled with the medication is more likely in most cases to be successful than either one alone. But good luck finding a therapist whose style of therapy matches the methodology you're most likely to respond to. Therapists need to offer a 30-day free trial before you buy in.

I would definitely talk to your doctor about what's important to you, and if you know how any close female relatives are doing on an antidepressant, that info can be helpful. My mom and I tend to react the same way to medications.

I also agree that talk therapy is a very important piece of treating yourself. Look around, and don't stay with a judgemental therapist. Therapist who makes you feel judged=Bad therapist. Period. If you wanted to be judged you'd go to your minister or grandma.

Good luck. Also, I want to mention that bodywork can be very helpful, like having shiatsu and doing yoga and meditation.

    Thanks.

As for my family doctor, she tried me on Effixor and really pressured me to stay on it when it wasn't working for me. It made me feel really sick (to my stomach) and I thought I might jump off a bridge or somthing at any second. It felt just like after you do an entire gram of coke, so I just stopped taking it and didn't go back to the doctor.

I know I can't just walk into her office and say 'gimme prozac'... I was actually gonna buy it online. It's super hard to find another doctor here. If I go back to the family dr. she's just going to try to start me on that wack effixor. I think she must get paid by the company that makes it, haha.

I don't think that the sex-drive stuff will bother me since I don't even have a bf.

I hardly ever prescribe Prozac to my patients anymore. In that particular class of medications, there are newer drugs with a better side effect profile. The one that I particularly like to write for is Lexapro. You get results in one week compared to three weeks for Prozac. Weight gain is less..... sexual side effects are less.........

that's about what my experience with effexor was only I was prescribed it by a psychiatrist. Dont' you love when doctors tell you they wish you'd stick on some drug that you KNOW is making you miserable? That is what happened when one doctor kept trying to put me on birth control pills to regulate my hormones. I've been trying to take bcp's since I was 16 and they ALL give me BAD migraines...she was acting like they might stop if I kept on them. Um, no. Trust me, doctor, they WON'T!

Unfortunately the U.S. medical system is all messed up. Primary care docs continue to get lower and lower reimbursements and as a result all the talent goes into big money specialties or lifestyle based specialties. I hear stories like yours all the time and it's disheartening. It is difficult to find a good family practitioner, internist, OB/GYN, or psychiatrist these days.

Prozac will only work for you if you have a chemical imbalance.
It's a great drug, the best of the lot, imo. New drugs notwithstanding....I'm always leery of the new ones, they need to prove themselves first, lol. Effexor was supposed to be the new wonder antidepressant, and before that serzone...never heard much good about either of them.

Anyways, I'd give prozac a shot. You sound more than a little bit depressed, and despite what Tom cruise says, sometimes you can't just diet and exercise your way to normalcy.

Not that I agree with Tom Cruise (I certainly don't), but don't underestimate the therapeutic value of exercise. There is medical literature out there that shows that for many people, regular exercise is as beneficial as medications in treating depression.

I have been taking a small dose of Zoloft. Exercise enhances my mood a lot. I always feel better when I exercise, and the better foods I eat, the better I feel.
