    Default cell phone providers

Any opinions on Sprint, Verizon, Cingular or TMobile? Or any other providers? It's time for me to switch (contract is up) and I'm curious about these particular companies...

    1. Which company do you use?
    2. How is the service (does it cut out alot?)
    3. What kind of plan do you have?

    Thank you!!!!

What do you currently have? Ive had cingular for like 3 years. I think its great. My best friend and boyfriend had nextel but they dropped every other call so they switched to cingular. My current plan is $39.99, 500 anytime minutes, but i hardly use any cuz they have cingular too, and we can talk for free. The roll over is great too. I had 1000+ minutes rolled over, and when i switched my plan to less minutes cuz my friends got cingular i got to save my rolled over minutes. Actually the service probably depends on your area

I use T-mobile. Works great for me but I live in the city so all the providers have great coverage. IMO T-Mobile has the best plans, Cingular has the best phones, Verizon has the best overall coverage in the US.

If I were to get a brand new plan I would go with Cingular because of the phones they carry.

Time for my shameless plug. If you don't mind please check out www.pocketlounge.com. We have some of the best deals on new cell phone plans. You can get the Motorola Razr for Free if you sign a 2 year contract. You can also transfer your existing number over.

I use cingular also, but since they merged with AT&T, its like they have a bunch of idiots answering the phones and whatnot. I think their service is just fine, I have dropped calls every now and then, but then I live in an area where my phone doesnt have all that many bars sometimes. When our contract is up, hubby wants to go to nextel, but I donno yet. We'll see when that time comes

Yeah I think it depends on your area. I had Sprint and I HATED DETESTED DESPISED THEM WITH A PASSION! My calls dropped constantly. I first got them in New Orleans and used my phone in florida too during that time with the same result. then I went to Verizon and it's a lot better though sometimes the calls do drop.

I have my cellphone through Cingular. I like them, haven't dropped a call yet (knocks on wood) and the reception is great, clear as a bell. My only gripe with them is that they don't have an option for Unlimited Text Messaging, a feature I use like crazy. They do, however offer 1000 text messages for $9.99, so I opted for that. They also don't offer Unlimted Nights & Weekends for any plan less than $49.99. I got the Nation 450 plan, which is $39.99, but it does come with 5000 Nights & Weekend minutes which is more than enough I think. They have an huge selection of phones, even at kiosks in the mall where we got mine. A lot were offered for free with the contract, but no camphones were offered free. So I purchased the Nokia 3220 camphone (has lights like a disco ball.. heh), for $79.99. All in all, I'm happy with it.

    Here's my plan:

    Anytime Minutes ~ 450
    Night & Weekend Minutes ~ 5000
Mobile to Mobile minutes ~ Unlimited
    Long distance ~ $0.00
    Roaming charges ~ $0.00
    Additional minutes ~ 45¢/minute
    One-time activation fee ~ $36.00
    Contract Length ~ 2 years

    Comes With:

    Caller ID
    Call Forwarding
    Call Waiting
    Detailed Billing
    Long Distance
    Three-Way Calling

Unlimited Mobile to Mobile Calling - Nation

My Hubby, Mother-In-Law, and Brother-In-Law all go through TMobile. I'm not sure what kind of plan Hubby has, but I know that it does include Unlimited Nights & Weekends and Unlimited Text Messaging.

Verizon's not bad, I used to work for them. Now, my Sister is manager of a store for my old boss. She says they've improved, but I don't know first-hand. It's been a while since I worked there, or had a cellphone through them.

Sprint sucks from what I've heard. My Brother In Law had service through them a few years back. He wasn't impressed at all; quite disappointed actually. So I'd avoid them.

My pick: Go with either Cingular or TMobile. Incidentally, I had Cingular way back when they were Cellular One. I was impressed back then, and I'm impressed now.

    Hope that helps! Good luck!

I've got Cingular and I'm LUCKY if I can make a 5 minute phone call without being dropped. Service is absolutely horrbile. There seem to be huge holes inside my city where service just does not exist. My dropped calls seem to have no relation to the number of bars on my phone either. I could have 5 bars and be unable to place a call.
I've got a ton of minutes (with the rollover and all) but what the hell good are they if I can't use them?!

My mom and brother have Verizon, which they like, but when I borrowed one of their phones for a little while, the thing wouldn't work on the university campus. It went to roaming and wouldn't place a call whatsoever. Go figure. The place in town where there is the highest concentration of people and there is no service....

I have T-Mobile. I think it's kinda sucky...though I haven't had many problems with the service, their phones are always crapping out on me. The phones from T-Mobile are cheap (not dollar wise, though). Sprint's operators are rude and ignorant...it also dropped calls constantly...and that's when I lived in the city (downtown) Chicago. It got worse when I went to the suburbs. Blech. Scorpio has U.S. Cellular and he loves them (along with a couple of other friends) so I'll probably switch to them when my contract runs out.

I thought Nextel would be cool, but their fees are INSANE! I was going to get them...but no way am I paying the amount of money they are asking to talk on a phone.

Ok Cingular users......I have a question for you.

I am having a hell of a time with messages not showing up on my phone when they are left. It usually takes anywhere from 2 to 5 mins to show up on my phone.

I have also seen it when I have had the phone off, that I don't get the message for about 1 day!!!

I never had this problem with AT&T. It only started once Cingular and AT&T merged.

Yup! I've got this problem too! I'll talk to my mother sometimes and she'll yell at me "Why didn't you call me back! Didn't you get my message?!?!!?"

    "Umm.... no."

    24 hours later....

"Hey mom, I just got your message.... "

    Blech!!

I guess service is different everywhere then, because I don't have a problem with Cingular, and Hubby has no problems with TMobile whatsoever.

As for the message problem for other Cingular people, I haven't had that either so I have no idea what it could be, other than the service.

I like my Nextel, especially because of the 2-way walkie talkie thingee. But, I will say this: the day after I got my phone (my wife got one too) we began getting spam text messages like mad! and this has never happened before with any other service. All Nextel said they could do was block them, but since they come from email addresses generally, that's fairly pointless. My service is great in the 'burbs, and it sucks in the city. Go figure. I've never had a provider I was totally happy with though, ever. I did especially dislike AT&T, I know that.

Well, I say they all suck in one way or another. But, I have actually experienced, in top worst order, Verizon (don't get me started), AT & T, & most recently, T-Mobile. Actually TM should be placed next to Verizon, for the worst possible service!
Lately, altho I still have TM, it's pre-paid only. I'm just not a huge cell phone user, & don't need 'nother monthly bill. When things get a little better, I will be lookin' into a new pre-paid co/service.

I have Nextel and I hate it! HATE IT!!!!!!! I live in the city, work in the Nations capital, and the stupid phone only works sometimes... It drops at least 30% of my calls, plus my phone does that stupid 4 bars and the damn call goes through. I am seriously considering paying the stupid $200 contract breaking fee.

Nextel should hire that "can you hear me now" guy!!!

I have Nextel I dont have any problems with it I am on the West coast area mostly have never really had any dropped calls . The plan is 39 or so I have plan share with an additional phone with its own # for 19.95 additional per month so when all said and done its 52 bucks a month - We share 400 minutes between the two of us we dont jabber much so it works - weekends free ..and from evening 9pm to 7am free .Plus we also like the walkie talkie feature . It always seems right after you seal a deal with any of these guys someone comes out with a better deal and you are locked in for two years oh well !

I have T-Mobile. It's strange that Venus said their phones are 'cheap', b/c I have their free phone (when I signed for 1 year), it's a Nokia and I've had it for a year and have had NO problems at all. I used to have Cingular and would always get cut off when making calls and they had terrible customer service. My mom has 5 phones from them (for all my younger siblings) and gets incorrect bills almost every month. They charged her like $200 for text messages that are disabled from their phones. The company admitted to making a mistake, but didn't take it off her bill for 3 moths and she went to collections! They finally fixed it, but after sitting in hold for over an hour! Also, the reception seemed terrible, even though I'm in a big city. T-Mobile seems to have nicer customer service.

    Here's my plan with T-Mobile:
    $39.99 / month

free nights / weekend (nights start at 9:00)
    free long distance
free roaming (This included when I was in the middle of mountains of AZ - pretty good reception even at 10K mile elevation near the grand canyon!)
    600 anytime minutes
call waiting, 3way, voice mail, etc

    $2.50 / month for 200 (or 250??) text messages

All in all, I have been thrilled with them.

My bf has Nextel and has a lot of dropped calls and has had billing problems. He signed up with a plan with free roaming and when he went to TX on business, they charged him $.50/ minute. They fixed it quickly though.

Thanks everyone for your input I have had NextTel forever & I freaking hate it. I agree that Verizon probably has the best coverage, but I'm going to give TMobile a shot. Thanks again

I have Sprint PCS and they opporate a little differently then other companies I used in the past (Celluar One, Verizon, and Qwest), and was really frustrated with them when I first got my phone. But after I understood how the billing and payment system worked, I kept on top of it and haven't had a problem since.

On a consumer board that I frequent, Cingular seems to be the name that comes up the most for troublesome phone companies. Of course that was only after Cingular took over AT&T, and they were legandary for bad service and rip offs. The board is www.clarkhoward.com

I'm on the west coast, and have had no problems with drop outs (I can't remeber the last time I had a dropped call), and coverage seems really good except for the most remote areas- and I spend a lot of time in Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, where you can drive for 50+ miles w/o seeing even a gas station! Even in these real remote areas, my phone switches to analog, and if nessessary, I can make a call.

My brother is a truck driver, and he uses Verizon, because of good coverage. I don't know if he has a problem with dropped calls or not.
