    Brain Pills?

Hi everyone, haven't posted much here lately since i've been working on getting my things together to finally go back to school.

I don't know if this is a weird question but as stated above since i will be going back to school i was looking for some sort of pill or vitamin to help me out "mentally" something that helps for memory or just to boost my brain power.

Has anyone taken any of these? can anyone recommend one?

Any info will be grealy appreciated.

I went to edit my post to add more, and accidentally deleted it instead. Gah.. Just woke up from a nap with the Munchkin.. So, there ya have it.

    Anyhoo.. As I was saying..

St. John's Wort can help. I use it on occasion for those "CRS" moments. Its "main" property is for treatment of depression. But the way it helps is by boosting mental power and strength. You can grab it at any pharmacy (in the vitamin section) or any nutrition centers.

Dill is also a powerful herb to use to boost brain power and memory. Use it in your cooking whenever you have a chance.

If I can think of anything else, I'll post it. I'll crack open my books later and see what I can find.

Of course not FDA approved, but i had a bok of herbs and such that are natural alternatives to FDA approved medication, i.e. drugs for Alzeheimers (sp)

Dill as Rhi. mentioned is a good one indeed mentioned.

Google it you will find more.

    Good luck,

I use to take phosphatidylserine, I got it from the Vitamin Shoppe. It's suppose to help with memory and boost brain function. What it did for me was help me seriously zone in and concentrate on whatever I was doing. The bottle says to take 1-3 daily but that gave me headaches and made me feel drugged. Taking 1 every couple of days was enough for me.

Gingko Biloba is known to help with concentration...I find it works OK, but no idea if that's just placebo effect . But still worth trying.

PS no St. John's Wort if you're on the pill, otherwise it can help you to focus, but I'm pretty sure it's a cumulative effect, so it'll take a few weeks.

I totally agree! Zone out, meditate, do yoga..things that will clear your mind. Some "natural" pills have ADVERSE side-effects, and sometimes they can be deadly. (I'm a worrier, what can I say)

Just keep yourself stress, and drama free. That way you can devot more time to your studies.

Well, seriously- yeah! Nothing will help you with getting distracted except either working through it, or getting rid of the distractions!

Does your mind wander all the time, or justwhen you're bored? Like, do you have trouble following a conversation even if you're interested in it? THAT might be worth looking into treatment for, but short of some supplements like Gingko (been around and used for thousands of years- 1000000000 Chinese can't be wrong ), it sounds like just changing your patterns a bitwould help.

You should look into a class of drugs called nootropics (pronounced noo oh troe pics). In order to be classed a nootropic, a drug must have little to no side effects, and demonstrably increase learning capacity. The "basic" nootropic is called piracetam, but there are many more such as aniracetam, oxiracetam, etc. Nootropic use does deplete choline, so it's important to use a supplemental choline source with them. I'd recommend alpha-gpc (more expensive) or lecithin (cheaper). So a good place to start would be 3 g piracetam and 100 mg alpha-gpc daily (divided into two doses). I'm also a big fan of acetyl-l-carnitine aka ALCAR. Here's an article on . Yeah, it's on a site that sells the product, but it's most definitely solid info.

Forget drugs, start with your diet! Read into this wonderful book, "The Healing Power of Food". With healthy eating habits comes a healthy body AND mind! Also, exercise is proven to boost the brain!

Oh yeah, forgot about that. That's some good advice from Megan. Cleaning up your diet will help you out mentally for sure. By "clean" foods, I mean foods that mostly are only composed of only one macronutrient (i.e. protein, carbs, fat). Exceptions to this are fatty fish like salmon, lean red meat, and nuts. Carb choices are a little trickier. Try to avoid foods that are high in gluten and lactose. Aside from that, before doing anything else, I'd recommend getting some fish oil. IMO, two supplements that everyone should take are high quality fish oil, and some source of green tea.

Don't take pills or drink coffee. I'm a premed student and right now studying for my mcats. I study ~12 hours a day. Coffee wll keep you alert for only a few hours and then you will crash.

Study at your peak hours. You will find out soon if you concentrate better in the morning or evening. It is very difficult for the brain to focus long periods of time, so take a 10-15 minute break every 1.5-2 hours. Also make sure your sleep schedule is consistent. I know it is very difficult for work, but try to work the same nights to keep you balanced.

As for note taking, there is a great book call Mind Mapping by Tony Buzan. He teaches you that the mind does not necessarily remember in linear. I've been using his mind map form for 3 years and I've been doing well with it.

    Also exercise helps!

If you have any more questions, pm me. I've done alot of research on the subject and it seems to be working.

edit to add: When you start seeing results you will be more motivated and interested in your courses. That's the best way to learn! Good luck
