Default Gas now $2.40/gal and climbing

Before I left on vacation I would swear gas in central Illinois was about $2.20/gal.

I thought it was $2.30 yesterday. Today it was $2.39.

On to $3.00 a gal. I say! What the hell lets go for $4.00 a gal.!!!

I did buy gas in Mexico in Cozemel two weeks ago and it was $3.03 A GAL. AMERICAN.

Remember the spin story when it hits $3.00. For those of you who keep forgetting and complaining here it is. "On an inflation adjusted basis in real dollars, (with inflation taken out) gas is still a bargain."

Now repeat after me. "There is no inflation. There is no inflation. There is no inflation...."

Had a mule once. Hitch it to a cart and hauled lumber, junk, water jugs, furniture, just about anything small. Extremely reliable animal. If you didn't mind putting up with excrement and constant feeding (a mixture of alfalfa and corn).
Yes, sir. This mule here used to belong to a little old lady who only used it going to church on Sundays. Would I lie to you? Now, would I?

it's rising, but is it honestly affecting anyone that badly?

So it used to cost me $20 to fill my tank. Now it's like $27ish....I drive a mid-size SUV.

I fill like twice a week so we're talking like $2 extra per day. This isn't going to break the bank! We are supposed to be earning good money. The majority of us are buying gas with unreported income too. I'm happy to have a car.

I never got why so many strippers don't have cars, but that's for another topic

I too drive a mid-sized SUV (4Runner) and it really isn't bugging me. I think the lowest gas I've found here is $2.49/gallon (Reno, NV). Sometimes I wish I still had my little convertible but it really doesn't change things all that much.

Damn. It costs me about $30 for my little Jetta.
    And that's at under $2.20 a gallon.

Of course dancers who say c ommute 80 miles to an outlying club on a major metro area
can do that in a bit over an hour of time. Say however they have a truck or SUV which gets
18 miles per gal. Thats now about $15 a day round trip. Times four days and you are up to
$60 a week. Some dancers may commute even longer. My guess is that maximum commute distance is about 120 miles going 75 miles an hour on an interstate to get to
a club with decent earnings potential. Now you are at $120 per week just for work.
At $3 a gal you are up to $144 a week for fuel. AT $4 a gal $192 per week.

My guess is that $3.00 a gal should start to "break" the US economy. Past presidents
being Nixon, Carter, and Reagen basically used rationing on an odd even basis to limit demand. Interesting that two of those three presidents were republic ans.

I guess the present "the market will solve everthing" under this president should
get a real test if this rising fuel trend continues.

The market can't solve anything if gasoline for sale in California/New York must contain special additives under state law, thus California/New York legal gas must be made in special batches in local refineries and more plentiful thus cheaper supplies of gasoline cannot be imported from adjacent states. The market also can't solve anything if the crude oil deposits known to exist off the east and west coasts are 'off limits' to drilling due to state environmental laws. The market also can't do anything about state gasoline road taxes being 50 cents per gallon higher in California/New York than in some neighboring states.

I also agree that $3.00 per gallon gasoline will be a tipping point such that the increased costs to businesses/commuters can no longer be silently absorbed, thus triggering a fresh round of price and wage increase attempts. However, it is not at all certain this time around whether those US price and wage increases will actually fly, versus many US businesses going bankrupt and many US workers winding up unemployed due to even more disadvantage vs. foreign imports.

....and $15 to be able to get to and from work is really not a big deal, especially when it cost $10 or so before and hypothetical dancer decides to drive a car that gets 18mpg highway. It's not going to break the economy. It's going to change things. People will drive less (yay!) and consider different modes of transportation. I'm willing to bet that there has been a surge in sales of hybrid/high mileage vehichles. People probably take their bikes or walk more.

Unless you are a little old lady on a fixed income that only drives to get her medicine and groceries, I can't really feel sorry for anyone bitching about the price of gas.

It's $3.89 per gallon down here in The Bahamas and climbing as well (that's with the normal 1-1 ratio between the US & Bahamian dollars)

I get 50mpg (diesel) on my station wagon....price of fuel (presently 2.79 for diesel) isn't scary to me...I drive only when I HAVE TO...use bikes/walk/bus everywhere else.

Actually, that's rather inaccurate. The gasoline itself costs about 1.75 a gal. The special additives required for sale in California add another 35 cents or something per gallon. The state of California adds yet another 50 cents or something a gal in road tax.

The actual commodity price of gasoline can be found on the COMEX every day. However, because of the special fuel additives required in California, this gasoline cannot be imported across the state line for sale.

    Blah.

I will admit you do bring out the info junkie in me, Mel. I found an interesting yet marginally usefull piece on this site:

    http://www.gaspricewatch.com/USGas_Z...=20&perpage=10

The second highest (reported on this site) price for gas (out of 2100 stations) within 20 miles of downtown LA can be found at this station:

    Texaco
    5551 W Century Blvd
    Los Angeles, CA

    Station Info
    Update Station Info
    ADD TO MY PAGE
    Spotter: dlsuv$2.89 $2.94 $3.09
Take a wild guess where it is.

It's the last opportunity for people returning rental cars at LAX to buy gas.

That is also inaccurate. In reality, Californians are being punished for voting for Grey Davis and a host of other state legislators who never met a social program spending plan they didn't like, never read an environmental bill which they thought was 'excessive', and never hesitated to enact any hidden tax increase i.e. gas tax, utility excise tax (which the general public would probably not be aware of, and would not blame on those politicians during the next election).

If it's any consolation, New York isn't much different.

If less people drove, and more people walked and rode their bicycles perhaps it could help the obeisity problem in the US today as well as the enviornment? I'm all for that!

Maybe but I think most people would walk or not go anywhere judging my america's large behind.

Ive been paying for at least 2 weeks $2.42-2.48/gal..
I know it will go back down after Labor Day but damn....Were all getting reemed in the meantime. I sucks b/c eventhough its just gas ...feels like theres nothing you can do about it. Some places are advertising that if you use cash instead of CC the price of gas wont be as high at their station.

Gas at the station across the street is $2.51 a gallon for the cheapest stuff...goes up from there.

I've pretty much walked/biked everywhere I've needed to be this summer. Which is fine, cuz Makayla enjoys it.

It's around $2.59 here in NYC within the 5 burroughs, seen a few stations a little lower here and there.
