    Kicking the java habbit?

Has anyone ever tried to kick a caffine addiction?

I am reading a book that says losing my coffee habbit will help my skin (I have periodic bouts with REALLY ugly and persistant acne) and slow down aging.

    __BUT__

I have been measuring my daily coffee intake in BUCKETS since I was 21. I get headaches when I don't have enough coffee or wehn the coffee is not strong enough. I fall asleep at odd times during the day and feel weirdly disjointed if I don't get my couple of cups--make that giant mugs--daily

I love my coffee. I am one of those coffee drinkers who knows and uses at least half a dozen pet slang words for my coffee, and worse yet, I am one of those poeple who call coffee "Joe" as if it was my friend! ("Going to go have a cup o' joe now, see ya!" )

Has anybody ever tried to kick a coffee habbit like this? Was it worth it? How hard was it???

I have never given it up. I have cut back by making Starbucks at home (you can buy it at the grocery store) and putting in one more cup of water and one less scoop of beans every week or so. I also cut out my after lunch tea and don't drink soda. Exercising in the morning will rev you up, but it's hard to make yourself do it.

Cut down gradually is my advice, because you know how shitty you'll feel if you go cold turkey. I highly recommend buying some Celestial Seasonings Roastaroma tea; it is pretty satisfying and robust for a wussy no-caffeine tea.

I had to completely cut out caffeine last January, doctors orders, and I had to quit cold turkey..no more chocolate, no more sodas, no more anything with caffeine. Its not that hard to do! If I had to quit cold turkey, anyone can quit. I was really sleepy though when I stopped.

I thought I was addicted to coffee. Then I read Coleen's post and found out I"m nothing more than a recreational user.

I liked SW's advice about substituting tea. That way you will still have a warm cup of something to hold. Kind of like people quitting smoking need something in their mouth?

YES!! I used to drink loads of coffee and espresso each day.

It's hard at first. I quit cold turkey. I just got tired of the headaches and the restless nights of sleeping.

You are, essentially, going through withdrawl. And, although your body will want to doze off at weird hours of the day...it will pass and you will have more energy than you did while you were drinking coffee.

Everytime I got a craving for caffeine (when I was feeling tired, whatnot) I drank a glass of water. I drank a lot of water in my first week of cold turkey quiting...but, you know...the urges became less and less...my skin became more hydrated, the headaches and the sleepless nights disappeared...all in the first week. By the second week, I thought less and less about coffee...and 3 weeks later, I had no desire to drink any coffee what-so-ever.

It's going to take a lot of willpower...but, you'll feel so much better when it's all over!!!

A cup of coffee has nearly twice as much caffeine as one shot (ounce) of espresso. If you are cutting back slowly, you might want to consider a small dose of espresso for the craving, rather than a cup of coffee.

Also, I'd stay away from decaf altogether. The chemicals used to process the beans to remove the caffeine are a whole lot worse than the caffeine itself.

It' s easy- I did it back in Feb., cut down from 4-6 cups a day to none. Just drink decaf!

My body personally is fooled enough by the placebo effect that the decaf will still wake me up a bit in the morning, lol.

I cut down my caffeine by switching to green tea (unlimited) for the first week, then went to decaf. Now I have about 3 cups a day of decaf, and it's been months...(I do know that there's a bit of caffeine in decaf, but it's like 3%).

And it does help your skin- it was an unexpected side benefit!

Ps only cheap decaf is chemically decaffeinated...you'll find that at least half the grocery shelf brands are water decaffeinated, as is starbucks.

    Yep, mostly.

The Starbucks Kenya series, although I don't think they feature that anymore, was decaffeinated using the European Methond (methylene chloride). The other coffees they have use the Swiss Water Method.

On a side note, the European process is usually cheaper coffee because the manufacturer can sell the caffeine extraction to soda companies. But most reports show that the methylene chloride leaves a better coffee flavor than the water extraction.

    I need a new hobby.

    Coleen

Ihad to quit last Feburary when I started my withdrawl program from valium, ambien and occasional xanax. It was easy to quit the drugs, but after three weeks I started getting massive panic attacks. It turns out it was the massive amounts of caffeine I was using to wake me up from the drugs.

My Doc told me to do it gradually. I first switched to a weaker brew of coffee, then I cut my amount in half until I was down to just one cup of decaff per day. That took about two and half weeks.

I have a bit of coffee every once in a while. I fee much better without having to rely on it so much.
I think if you do it gradually, your symtoms won't be as severe.

Yeah, alternate coffee with yierba mata with green tea. Only drink it if you really need a boost, not every morning. If I am well rested, I won't drink coffee at all. Try to cut down to a cup every other day to begin.

I cut back gradually subbing more and more Roasterama or teeccino (www.teeccino.com ). Towards the end I just went cold turkey on the coffee and switched to one or the other of the subs. I had to do it quickly, like in a week for medical reasons. I was *really* tired when I first stopped but found it to be worth it in the end. I felt sooo much better.

I eventually started drinking coffee again but much less than I used to. I need to give it up again.

I am in the same boat Colleen.. I got addicted to German coffee.. and can no longer buy market stuff like Folgers, etc... I love Jacobs.. which is very very strong and very good... and I drink about a pot of coffee a day no matter what... and have done so since about 20 something..

But, When I am finished drinking my coffee, I switch to water and drink a ton of water. I don't have issues with breakouts etc.. but I do get horrible headaches if I don't have coffee. I tried cutting back a few years ago, and it just didn't work. I figure it is the one thing that I enjoy and I don't smoke or drink much, so I guess if I have to have a "vice" of some sort, coffee isn't all that bad.... Plus, I can't eat any sugar, so really,I view my addiction to coffee one of those things that is better than some other things I could be addicted to.

I weaned myself off coffee with green tea, which I find gives me a lengthier, mellow sort of boost. No crashing, but now I can't give up the tea.
