    Default 'inked' on a&e

i've noticed a number of shows/documentaries on tattooing and other bod mods lately...like the new show 'inked' coming on next week. i wonder what the deal is with that?

i personally think it's cool seeing as i'm somewhat a devotee of bod mods myself to some degree. on the other hand i still know that a lot of people still hate bod mods and those who have them, and no amount of shows will change the attiudes of the general public...like the misconception that only the teenie boppers are doing it in order to piss of their parents, or that all people that get tattoos and piercings are inmature and/or trashy, or worse.

anyway...i just noticed this trend and wonder if anyone else noticed too...

    that is all

why do some people still have to fight to get the same opportunities that are given to others?

I have noticed as well Topaz. There is a show on the National Geographic channel called "Taboo..." and it explores taboos in societies. It's ranged from tattoos and body modification, to rites of passage, gender bending, to extreme foods and jobs. I watch out of sheer curiosity. Kind of like the "Extreme Make-over" or "Dr. 90210" for the more mainstream. I have tattoos and piercings, and I enjoy watching those shows. You learn about the origins, as well as the many different kinds of modifications and practices. They had one about suspensions and fraternity branding last night. I don't think they're out to change minds so much as inform.

i saw 'taboo' a couple of times myself...i also watch 'dr. 90210' sometimes too. i find it interesting that both types of shows are about body modification, but plastic surgery is accepted while tattooing and piercing is not...even in this day and age.

anyway...i'll be 'glued' to the tv on wednesday to watch 'inked'. i want to see what their story is.

Unfortunately, I don't get A&E, basic cable here. But, I did watch on Discovery Chanel, a show called, "Tattoo, Beauty & Pain. It showed the old method used by South Pacificers, tapping w/wooden instrument. It also showed the Tattoo Conventions (which I enjoy, but they're a lil' expensive just to get in here, & park). I have watched other shows like this, can't remember what they're called, but it is interesting.

i like watching these type of shows because you get the history behind the practice.

i'm from the school of thought that you need to know the history of something before diving into it...don't just jump in 'cause you think it's cool or it's different. i was going to get my septum done this summer. then i read the history behind that piercing and changed my mind. decided on the nostril (again - y'all just don't know how many times i've had my nose pierced) because i dig the history behind it...and it fits my personality.
