I'm doing a photoshoot on Tuesday in black and white. Anybody have suggestions on the type of makeup/mode of application that "reads" best in Black & White?

Dark red lipsticks shows the absolute best on b & w photos! You'll do great. B/W are soooo sexy!

In black and white photography, the best results are achieved with the subjects in high contrast colors and fabrics. Note the portraits in the gallery. Most people choose to wear black. It's flattering and highlights the face well. White often projects a softer, more romantic feel, whereas, black is more dramatic and edgey. Pastels will look muted, a muddy gray effect. Polka dotted, striped, and flannel prints are bold and appealing on black and white film. Highly textured fabrics like chanille, boucle, offer a gorgeous richness to the images.

^^She knows her stuff!
I had a black & white photoshoot before, and the makeup artist on set used a dark red lipstick and put lots of gloss overtop.
She also darkened my eye makeup to create contrast.
x0x & good luck!

For the face, Use a matte foundation ... the less light
reflected on and off your skin the better.
Also, pay particular attention to your wardrobe colors. Make sure
whatever you are wearing (if anything at all!!) is dark in color.
Lightn colors reflect way too much light and
will cast unflattering shadows!!!
Let's see... use a matte lip color to cut down on reflection...... no bright
glossy reds!!! Bright glossy reds will give your lips too high a
contrast - with b&w photography, bright glossy red
actually looks black.
One more important thing, it is usually best to mascara only your top
lashes. Doing the bottom ones will make your eyes look
like a raccoon's!!![]()
Never Sit On What You Can Sell.
Thank all of you so much for your input. I knew I could count on you all for good answers!
I was planning on matte foundations, with a little contouring, not too drastic. For the eyes, a Brigitte Bardot look with falsies on the top lash and winged liquid eyeliner for the 1950s look.
Lips, not red, but a shade or two darker than my natural lip color.
My hair is red, and it's cut in that layered sideswept bangs thing that everyone in the world is currently sporting, so I was contemplating starting off with waves, then a half updo, then a full updo.

Since you are a redhead, a brown blusher will work best for you. Besides, brown blush tends to photograph in B&W with nice soft contrast instead of harsh.

Smart, since you going for a 50's type of look (I love waves and such) you will need the red lipsOriginally Posted by smartcookie
I would hate for your makeup, clothes, hair to be superb, but your lips have a mute contrast. You will look faded..

Hi All,
Everyone pretty much covered everything pretty well, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. (I'm also a makeup artist for many years)...
Skip colors like blue, lt. pink and lilac eyeshadow. They look wierd or non-existant on B&W.
Stay away from to much frost-y, glittery makeup. It doesn't look good on B&W.
For eyes, try a beige color on the whole eye and use dark brown or burgundy/brown to contour the crease area.
Use black/brown eyeliner and blend with a q-tip for a soft smokey look.
Use burgundy or brown blush to contour areas of your face that need it. To create cheek bones, slim the jawline, etc.
Joe Blasco foundation is awesome for photoshoots. It has a concentrated pigment that makes any skin look flawless. Its specifically made for TV and print photography and used by industry people alot. http://www.joeblasco.com
Go a little darker on application than you normally would.
Have a poloroid "test shot" taken so that you may check out the makeup looks.
Good luck! I love photo shoots. Have fun!

It went very well, thank you. I did what I said I would, and I turned out perfectly - not too washed out, but not too made up either.
I posted cropped photos last night - at the moment, I can't show full-face photographs.
The photographer doesn't do TFP, but if anyone's looking for a phenomenal B&W photographer, PM me and I'll refer you.
wow, those are beautiful![]()
Gorgeous pics, SC!!
