From the article:
The press attacks when it feels openly lied to. (Emphasis on “openly.”) Also when it senses weakness, which of course means it’s safer to attack. Dana Milbak spoke for most reporters when he said to McClellan: “It is now clear that 21 months ago, you were up at this podium saying something that we now know to be demonstratively false.” (See also David Corn.) McClellan and the White House didn’t try to contest it, choosing silence until the prosecutor is done.
I disagree. The Clinton administration lied to the country, instead of attacking the administration, the press ran stories about what a great politician Clinton was. When Clinton said, "it depends on what it means" the press didn't castigagte him, they remarked on how clever his ambigiuos statements were.

Probably because the press was intelligent enough to realize what an incredible waste of time and money went into uncovering a BJ.Originally Posted by Destiny

I can think of no other group with such an exaggerated view of their own self importance than the media in the U.S. I thought the subject of the article was lying to the public. I didn't realize that the media had been empowered to discern for the public whether such lies were serious or not. I must have been sick the day this was discussed in government class. I was under the impression that the role of journalists was to report the news, not decide what people were to think about the news.
