Default Hair colour help for the desperately needy

Ladies - we need some hair colour advice pretty bad here.
My sister is naturally a dark blond/light brown haired person. Her hair, as she gets older, gets sort of duller looking (she also doesn't moisturize, but that's a different issue). So her hair is naturally quite dull, and I tried for years to talk her into colouring her hair. She didn't want to because she liked being a "natural blonde" (albeit a dishwater blonde). She finally caved, agreed to colour her hair - and I made an appointment to take her to get it done, and... she just went ahead and did it herself. You know how it looks the first time you colour your own hair? To top it off - she accidentally bought a bleaching kit thinking it was a colouring kit (and I colour my own hair all the time, but I am firmly of hte opinion that bleaching your own hair is a mistake). Anyway, it looked really bad, and she is willing to try it again (it been about 11 weeks) but I really want it to go well this time. So I need some colour advice. Her hair is naturally (as I said) a sort of dishwater blonde. The thing is that she has a very, very red complexion. Like, her face? Red. Her hair is about chin length and curly, and her eyes are blue. Just to recap
    Red Complexion
    Short, curly, fine hair
    Blue eyes
    Dishwater blonde.

    Help?

It depends. Mine tends to turn reddish so I buy Loreal preference in Extra Light Ash blonde. My sister's will turn gray or green with ash shades, so she gets buttery golden blondes. Both of us look like dishwater blondes au naturel. I tend to feckle more and she has a cooler pale complexion.

Is she going to the salon this time? I hope she's learned from her mistake... She might want to find a salon that has colorists and stylists as opposed to a salon where the stylist also colors. Good luck!

Jenny, if she doesn't even want to moisterize/condition her regular hair, then coloring it would only make matters worse! She has to start taking care of her hair. Hair coloring really strips the hair, and if she isn't even conditioning it, that will just make it even more dull, brittle, and will probably break off.

    ^^
I meant that she doesn't moisturize her face. She does use conditioner on her hair. She was a contractor, so she was used to the hard physical labour outside, and she didn't look after herself too well. I also have to nag her to take her damn vitamins.

I just really don't want her to be disappointed again. I'd like her to look at herself afterwards and think "whoa."

Ohhhh I got ya hahaha. Well in that case. Take her to a spa. Most spas have stylists and colorist. Coloring is a complex chemical process..It should be done by someone who does it all day, EVERYDAY. Versus someone who colors weekly/bi-weekly.

    Oh, you got me.
Seriously, I do see what you are seeing here. Actually, she is not happy with the way she looks. Her unhappiness tends to manisfest itself in different and somewhat less harmless ways than hair colour. I do see your point - that if she is happy with her hair, why would I try to make her unhappy with it? and I can see where you got that idea - I will just have to ask you to trust that I would never depreciate my sister's value (cosmetic or otherwise) in making these suggestions.

One lesson in life is we have to let others be themselves. You say after YEARS of trying to get her to colour her hair she caved in. That just sounds like she is a beautiful person, and happy with her looks just the way she is. Maybe you are not, did you ask her if it was all up to her would she let her hair just age naturally? I know where you are coming from...I did the same to my sister years ago....We did dye the hair, and change her style, but in the long run she went back to being all natural, and loving it.

We all love and want our family members to look great...But they are not us!
