    Default phone etiquette

I got a phone message the other day from a male friend asking me if I wanted to go to dinner with him and a few other people. I was up late the night before so had slept in and checked my messages later in the afternoon. When I listened to my phone messages this guy had called three times asking if I was going and could I please call him back so he would know how many people to get a reservation for.

I thought it was a bit rude to insist on a call back since I was just asked that day without any other prior knowledge of this outing.

I did call back and let him know I had other plans. Does anyone think I was under obligation to do so since it was a last minute thing he had planned?

    No.

Even accounting for DFF (thanks CP!), it would be unreasonable to expect that you'd be available on nearly no notice.

    Two cents.

No, Tampadancer, I'm not a Tampa girl, but thanks for the compliment on my name. I tried to come up with something unique.

I guess my question was confusing, but I didn't mind that he asked me last minute. I just thought that calling over and over demanding a call back about the event was rude since it was last minute.

I don't think you are obligated to do anything you haven't agreed to...
