Default How big is your bouncer?

For the ladies, do you feel safer when your bouncer is tall and buff? Do you feel they can use their muscles to intimidate unruly customers? What's the average height and weight of bouncers in your clubs?

One event staffing firm I know has a "hands-off" policy. From an owner's liability standpoint, I would imagine that he would also prefer a bouncer not to get in a fight with the customer (unless maybe he got punched in the face by Kid Rock). So, ideally the bouncer would show off his muscles to intimidate, but in reality talk to the customer to resolve the situation. What do you girls think?

There are three bouncers at my club. Two of them are huge 300 lb. black guys. One is thinner and white.

Personally, I trust my big black bodyguards more. They don't look like someone you mess with, that's for sure.

And my loverly bouncer punched someone in the face for me. :3

My club has @ 5-8 guys working on any given night. They are generally on the tall side and muscular, most are serious gym types and/or personal trainers during the day. They're not overly huge but certainly look tough enough.

I think the guys operate more like hosts than anything else at most clubs. Of course size tends to be a factor when hiring them, just to look intimidating when necessary. Most clubs have adopted a talk-first-force-later policy - generally security will only resort to physical force when a customer is violent or overly threatening / unruly (ie, refusing to leave when asked and getting belligerent in the process).

They are mostly there to help keep the floor and tables clean and orderly, and LOOK tough.

A few clubs however, tend to hire guys who don't even look tough or intimidating - they are obviously just hosts. I feel safer in clubs with the more tough guy types working the floor because on the rare occasion something does get physical, I want to know the bouncers can get things under control quickly. Drunk guys with fragile egos can sometimes be quite dangerous

Height does not equate to fighting prowess. Bruce Lee and Mike Tyson are not the tallest guys in the world, but they could knock many a taller man on their ass if they have to.

Heh. wasn't really referring to fighting here. But, yes, good point. I know lots of short, & skinny guys that are some real ass kickers.

My statement was directed to the tone of the thread overall, which implied that you are safer with a tall guy bouncing at the door. I understand most women think along those lines, so I wanted to point out that it ain't necessarily so. Weight and size can certainly help, but I have to laugh when women see some tall stringbean and think he is automatically a better protector than the guy built like a fireplug.

I prefer tall, muscular intelligent bouncers, I've also enjoyed working with a few 30-50 y.o. well groomed dapper old gansters, who looked like if you gave them any trouble they were pulling out their guns.

I thikn the older custy's where more comfortable with them, and the younger guys intimidated/too respectful... cause I've only seen them get physical once

Since the bouncers are mostly supposed to LOOK tough, it's better if they're taller. Taller, bigger guys generally LOOK tougher. That was the point there stringer As far as feeling safer, yeah I feel safer with the muscle-bound types around usually. Although Nina brings up a good point about the older gangsta lookin guys - used to work with some of those in NOLA, and they certainly knew how to handle their jobs

We had a 130 lb asian guy take down a 180 lb (or so) unruly customer earlier this week. Size can make a difference for appearances, but how effective they are when they are needed is more important. Don't underestimate your "smaller" floormen!

I understood your point, but LOOKS are not pertinent if the guy can't handle himself, Bridgette.

Obenta illustrated the point I was attempting to make.

My bf used to be a bouncer in a nightclub. He's not a super huge guy but he's a great fighter and sometimes the big buff guys would just stand there and freeze up when a real fight arose and he'd have to take care of it. He did tell me though that a lot of places wouldn't want to hire him because he doesn't have the "look" and that a lot of clubs just want a bouncer who looks intimidating to keep people from causing trouble.

I used to wonder what happened to big high school linemen (football) who weren't good enough or smart enough to go on to college. I think a lot of them become bouncers.

I used to hang out in two different clubs that were run entirely by older women, no bouncers anywhere. Those clubs had the least trouble with customers of any place I've ever been. Which makes me wonder if bouncers don't sometimes cause as many problems as they solve. I guess if those places ever had a problem they just called the cops.

MY point is that clubs are going more for the 'talk them down' tactic regarding security rather than punch first ask questions later. They want guys who can not only get down to business physically, but more importantly, who can TALK with customers and make them feel more comfortable in general but LOOK intimidating when needed. Since clubs are interested in a more HANDS-OFF approach to security these days, they often tend to like guys who LOOK at least somewhat intimidating, in order to help encourage unruly custies to settle without a fight. Our bouncers are great. The size range between them is crazy though. One participates in the "world's strongest man" competitions while another is maybe 5'9". They all talk first and will defuse a situation verbally before getting physical which I think in the long run is best. However, the best guy in the place is the smallest size wise. He's shorter but jacked and would have a guy down and out before he knew what hit him if it came down to it.

Just tossing this out there,it DOES depend on the club.

Yes big burley guys make for a great visual deterent, but the best doorman I have ever seen at defusing a situation were females, and little ones at that.

Not that I would be the kind of guy to start something in a club to begin with, but I'm 6'5" 280ish. If I walk into a club and the bouncer makes me feel little, it just makes me think that much more about keeping things tame. Size is a BIG deterrent to a lot of guys. I haven't been in a fight since 4th grade, I almost bounced at a club here in Denver, but the club was a little light on the morals side of things. I've bounced a few private parties too, and the size just says "don't fawk with me." But IMO a smaller guy who can verbally diffuse a situation is eleventy billion times better than a meathead who just knows how to beat the shit out of people.

Yes I agree with you - You gotta use your smarts not just your brawn but they can both be a benefit when used correctly .

The club I visit has HUGE bouncers. One is a huge black guy, about 6'4, 230lbs of pure steriodal muscle. The other main bouncer is about 5'7 (I'm taller than him), and about 250lbs of muscle. The guy that does the stage calls and bounces as well is a tall, super fat guy with a good portion of muscle as well. I have seen these guys take out rowdy customers. They wear brass knuckles and just look plain scary. I'm not one to make a fuss at all, but if I ever left my mind and wanted to, they'd def make me think 3 and 4 times about it. I wanted to be a bouncer at one point, however no one wants a 5'8 somewhat muscular woman bouncer. Guess I'll just have to tone up and dance.

We don't have bouncers, just hosts. A cute slim girl works the door. Our VIP host is easily in his 70's and is always ready to down a few strong ones...Even our bartenders, valet, and kitchen staff are puny.

They want to avoid the place being perceived as "rough". But one night when I walked in, 3 managers/hosts were holding a 400 lb man down on the ground until the cops came in to arrest him. Apparently he had assaulted a dancer and punched my manager. My boys in their dark suits did a great job!

In my experience it wasn’t the size of the bouncers that made a safer environment.. it was more the attitude and respect from the club (towards the dancers) that made a difference.

Most bouncers are 6+ feet, 250+ pounds

Size intimidates, period - up close, from across the room, and even via memory (e.g., remember him from front door) - and therein lies its real value, i.e., deterrence. But, when that's failed, size matters not... it's what the other guy can see in his eyes that counts.

I know exactly what you're saying Bridgette. It's the speak softly and carry a big stick theory. If you have bouncers that are tall and muscular, most likely, they will never have to do much but look intimidating. It's harder for a shorter (even if muscled) guy to do that.

I am head of security at a nightclub as my second job. I'm 6' tall, 230 pounds. In my experience, attitude - the way you walk, the look in your eye, how you stand, etc. - counts for much more than size or fighting ability. The ability to be firm and polite when interacting with customers is more valuable than anything.
