Default Is classic rock a decent choice?

I read the article on music that said that mostly classic rock or country would be the kind of music that sells. But is this true? My favorite music is classic rock too, but I don't know if sticking to only Joe Cocker, Lynard Skynard, and Billy Idol (etc) would be the best idea... any thoughts? What's the best genre?

To dance to at a club? Depends on the demographics of the customers. I change it up based on what kind of guys I have in at the time. If there is a majority, I choose a genre most suited to them. If its ultra mixed, I tend to stick with something as middle-of-the-road as I can, usually newer mainstream rock or late 70s and/or 80s rock.

I was a classic rock junkie at my club...

Just a few of what I danced to...

Rod Stewart- Hot legs,If you think I'm sexy
    Montrose- Rock Candy
Bad Company- Feel like makin love
    Foghat- Slow Ride
Rick Darringer-Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo
Billy Squire-In the dark, everybody wants you..
Bob Seeger- Strut, Old Time Rock and Roll (I did the whole risky business thing.. big white men's shirt with booty shorts underneath.. and I borrowed a neighbor's sunglasses he wore in highschool-Ray bans.. worked well)
CCR- Green River, Down on the corner, Proud Mary (a must!)
John Fogerty- Old Man down the road
    Van Morrison- Brown Eyed Girl
America- Sister Golden Hair (This one is hard to pull off, you have to wait for the right crowd.. do it with Brown Eyed girl and a CCR song, blue jean cut off shorts work best!)
BTO (Bauchman Turner Overdrive) You ain't seen nothing yet, Gimme your money please, Little Gandy Dancer
Foreigner- Cold as Ice, Dirty White Boy,Double Vision
Dio- Rainbow in the dark, Could have been a dreamer
Steve Miller Band- Big old jet airliner, Abracadabra
    Journey- Lovin Touchin Squeezin

These are just a few of many... Pm me if you want more.. Have fun! I can tell you that most of these work when you have an older crowd.. of course, CCR is ALWAYS a hit regardless of the age group.. I'd put on a CCR song and pretty soon everyone would be singing.. LOL..

Just my 2 cents, I don't think I have ever worked in a club where classic rock didn't work. The older guys are okay with it, the middle aged guys LOVE it, and the younger guys know it even if they dont like it. It's a win-win situation. Same goes for funk/disco/new wave etc.....if it's upbeat & fun & something everybody knows, and you work it...you should make cash. I had a girl ask me for "Misled" by Kool & The Gang yesterday, and it KILLED. She went in VIP as soon as she got offstage. The new shit is fun, but it aint classic.

Let the DJ "read" the crowd for you, sometimes they notice things that we don't since we're busy.....
I love classic rock. I think the harder songs go over better than folky sounding tunes.
    Some stripperworthy classic tunes:
Bob Seger- Fire Down Below, Hollywood Nights
AC/DC- You Shook Me All Night Long
Aerosmith- Back in the Saddle, Sweet Emotion
Eagles- Life in the Fast Lane, Hotel California

    older guys love classic rock.

I danced to Ramble on by Led Zeppelin. I had the DJ Start it a little in to the song. Tom Sawyer by Rush is a good one.

Instead of $1 BILLS , I was getting $5, $10 , and $20.00 tips on stage by the 40+ age group.

Anything by the Beatles! I danced to Yellow Submarine once and got $50 tips.

A good rule of thumb is look at the crowd. If the majority of the guys are 40+, then classic rock is always a good choice. If they are younger, then look at the way the dress. If they look hip hoppy, then that's probably the way to go; but if they are wearing Megadeth t-shirts, then that's your answer.

    I personally like:
    The Beatles
    Pink Floyd
    The Stones
    AC/DC
    Kiss
    Black Sabbath
    Ozzy
    BOC
    Led Zepplin
    Jimi
    Janis
    The Who
    Grand Funk Railroad
    SRV
    Sex Pistols
and tons more but I can't remember then right now. But what you have so far is a pretty good list.
