I prefer the term "launch" rather than "going up" for obvious recent history reasons.
Being the one of the first pioneers or explorers is always dangerous. But usually satisfying and worth it. (Like buying a hybrid car.)

Looks like they had debris coming off in the launch. They will be doing a inspection sometime today or tomorrow (from what I hear) to inspect for bad tiles.

I also heard the computers won't boot correctly and they lost the use of a couple of camera's on one of the robot arms.
I've heard that a good signiture sets you apart from everyone.
    Well......is this good enough???

Yup, folks, time for an upgrade. We've been due for a next gen shuttle for years now.

Gotta finish the station (and maintain it), but dead astronauts can't do much more than say boo. The Russians have been doing fine with their launches, we need to get cracking on a new shuttle model.

would i go up in that thing.... no, but those guys know the risk and go anyway. that takes alot of guts and i'm just patriotic enough to be glad the usa is back in space..

also my next door neighbor has worked out there since 1966 and has seen em all from the beginning(apollo)... so cool

Its easy for us to say "build a brand new one" or "do this or that"

Im 100% positive NASA has the most intelligent engineers, pilots, math wizards and all that other good stuff working on every possible thing.
These people are 500x smarter then all of us put together.
    I have faith in them.

Unfortunetly, freak accidents happen though, nothing a 100000 simulations and tests could of predicted, but it happens....

Madcap is right, though. Because of budget cutbacks in the 90's, instead of working on a new and much better designed craft, we're still flying 25 year old plus shuttles that were never envisioned to have to remain in service for as long as they have. Brings to mind B52 bombers which are older than their pilots !!!

As to Russian spacecraft (if you want to call them that, they're actually more like projectiles/capsules), they have a horrible history of safety. However, the Russians also had virtually complete control over their media, so the world never got to see where the nickname "spam in a can" originated. Obviously the Russians had worked most of the kinks out of their space "capsules" by the 90's, which is why they now allow foreign passengers. But today's Russian capsules are really 1950's technology versus 1970's technology for our Space Shuttle. Problem with both is that they need to inject some 21st century technology, and fast ! Good God, look at what one aircraft designer, one ex-Microsoft employee, and a handful of dedicated people were able to do with less money than it takes to fill the Shuttle's fuel tanks these days ...

Space flight is inherently risky; people involved in these projects are acutely aware of that risk.

Think about it--everything involved with these projects is dangerous. The big orange fuel tank is essentially a liquid bomb.

You can't guarantee safety with space travel, and the people who are doing these missions aren't looking for that. You won't hear any of those panic-driven reservations the media has about NASA coming from the commander of the shuttle--Eileen Collins has balls and brains bigger than any of us and she's the one running the show up there.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

But risk has been part of travel for thousands of years. Think of the millions of people who have died on boats/ships at sea during the technological evolution of ships from lashed up reeds to skin covered sticks to viking longboats to clipper ships to the Merrimack to Titanic to today's Pacific Princess. Same loss of life and same technological evolution from the Langley's AeroDrome (yes the Wright flyer was NOT the first airplane capable of flying with a human passenger) to fabric and string biplanes to aluminum monoplanes to Northrop's flying wing to the Bell X-15 to today's B2 Stealth Bomber and Boeing 767. The same evolution will inevitably take place with space vehicles, and at the moment we've only stepped from a lashed up reed raft to the skin covered sticks phase (tearfully recalling historical image sequence from TV show Enterprise! - )

That’s so true Mel, I give my respects to those so brave..

Look at the history of Constructional Engineering.. thousands have lost their lives building our great City’s, train passages etc around the world.

I know. I just thought they would take more time, but it really seemed to me that they had the watch and wait crap going on. Maybe because of the damn Media.

I just got shivers thinking about them flying into space (pray for them).. your concern is most certainly legitimate Pamela.. Time is money.. who knows why they launched when (as you said) the media reported repeatedly they aren’t ready.. hopefully it was a decision made by the proper NASA department ... not the greedy bastard department.

I was at the launch today, it was wonderous. I swear my whole body shook with the ground. w00t! I'll be there again for another launch (just a rocket) on the 29th. Fun fun.

I'm hoping I can be there for the Atlantis and Atlas V launches too.

I think NASA has this under control ..The media just wants to hype things up . People you gotta know that lots of things can or could go wrong I am sure the pilots are aware of this and so are their families . I would take the chance just to take the trip on the shuttle wouldnt you ?

Well Russia doesnt re-use their shuttles they are not even close to our technology ! We had to repair the space station . I would fly on any of the NASA shuttles I would not get close to getting into the microsoft guys shuttle not even close - they just broke the crust of the upper atmoshere - maybe when they can get a few hours behind them I would feel better about it .You know we have been driving fairly fast and dangerous projectiles down the roads here in the US for years but do you think that "this is going to be my day" everytime you get into your car - especialy with the idiots that are on the roads -A big part of discovery = risk

I consider myself to be adventurous enough to dive out of a plane with 2 or 3 parachutes.. but not bungee jump..

I would fly into space and have often dreamed of having the opportunity however, given the “hype” of this particular mission, I think I would pass.. If I was about 20yrs older, then I would defiantly go no doubt.

As for the risks involved, yes we all know there are risk..... I don’t think the risk factor is at question here.. it’s the motive of the launch following speculations of not being prepared.

Nasa engineers have said some of the older technologies used in the shuttle may be more reliable than the microprocessors found on newer craft.

'Sometimes hi-tech doesn't go with robust,' Jeffrey Carr, a spokesman for United Space Alliance, the main contractor for the space shuttle, told The New York Times.

The only problem they found was a faulty reading on a fuel sensor it went away and didnt come back again - sound familiar does your computer ever experience unexplainable problems . I just feel that going into space will always have some kind of risk attached . And if you are for space exploration you want to see these launched more frequently or the program will just go away .

Actually, Pamela, I think that there is more than just a bit of desparation in regard to the future of the Space Station and manned space flight in general if America's Shuttle didn't start flying again in short order. While it isn't widely publicized, the two 'nauts on the Space Station are just about holding their own up there in regard to food, water, oxygen, power, repair parts etc. The Russian capsules don't have the physical space or the 'weightlifting power' to deliver much more than replacement crewmen with 'care packages'. Speculation was that if the Shuttle can't be counted on to deliver serious tonnage into orbit, that by this October or so the Space Station would have to be abandoned. This was the unspoken motivation to get the Shuttle back into orbit this quickly - because everyone in the manned space flight program fears that if the Space Station was abandoned that it would mark the end of space development work ... just as funding cutbacks during the Carter Administration marked the end of moon exploration.

Obviously a few measly million bucks and a handful of designers/engineers/fabricators concentrating on a project for 2 years does not produce the same results as tens of billions of gov't dollars and thousands of the best brains in the country concentrating on a problem for a decade. But c'mon, those guys did damn good for themselves ... you'd never see this type of individual effort and accomplishment coming out of a Western European or Asian country ! This was good ol' fashioned American 'what do you mean it can't be done"-ism at its finest.

FOrmer aerospace engineer, been an avid shuttle watcher/involved since 1986 at least, and the fact is this WAS NEVER the best shuttle we could have made (cheapest to make, most expensive and dangerous to maintain, etc.)....politicians always get in way of engineering.

that having been said, Id fly in it...though space flight is always risky and will always be. We just gotta accept that. Life is a risk. No lawyer can fix that.
