    Sad In pain, so swollen.

So it's 5:45 a.m. here and I'm awake. I'm usually not up for another 5 or 6 hours; BUT, I had my wisdom teeth taken out not 24 hours ago and I'm in agony. I still haven't cried yet, but I'm almost there. I don't know which is worse, the pain, or the nastiness of not being able to brush my teeth. Opening my mouth wider than 2 inches kills, and so does eating or drinking. I had 4 of them taken out, and the Dr had to dig for them cause they were wedged down in there. Sorry to sound like a whiner but it hurts so much and I'm trying to read posts and take my mind off the pain. My pain pill wore off and I can't sleep.

I hear ya! I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed on the 7th. I slept in my rocker/recliner. You should keep your head slightly elevated for the first few days. Use lots of cold packs. I had the refreezable ones and I would pretty much keep them on my face for as long as I was comfy for. Do that for the first 3 days and then on the third day, you switch to hot packs...as much as possible for as long as you are comfy with. I barely had chipmunk cheeks. I was a little swollen, but not much. The cold packs for 3 days and then the hot packs really do help...not just with swelling, but also with pain.

You should not be eating ANY foods. Only protein shakes...things that are squishy. No need to pull the clots out and get dry socket (although, even after being analy careful with my mouth, I still got dry socket on my bottom right tooth...owwwwwwie). I wasn't in that much pain until my dry socket kicked in...then, OMG...my 3 year old was rubbing my head while I cried, it was so painful. If it still hurts like this in the morning...go back to your dentist. You may already have dry socket and that is the pain that you are feeling. They will pack the sockets that need to be and you'll feel 100% better.

What kind of pain meds are you taking? I had Vicodin and Ibuprofen. I would take the Vicodin and then 3 1/2 hours later, I would take the Ibuprofen...and then switch off like that (take the pain meds about 1/2 hour before you are due for your next dose. That way, it'll have time to dissolve and spread through your body and you won't be in pain waiting for it to kick in). Don't forget to keep taking your penicillin.

It should NOT be this painful...if you are experiencing enough pain to make you cry, then you need to get back to the dentist and have them pack those babies up. Don't try to "stick it out".

    It'll get better!!

I would whine too if someone ripped my teeth out of my head and having to dig for them at that. I would whine until it stop hurtin...then demand things.

Great advice as always VG. I hope I dont have to go through this pain ever!

C'mon over.. you and I can recouperate together...

But VG is right.. when I had my wisdoms out, three days max and I was feeling much better.. it shouldn't hurt like you describe, although, if you can get past the nausea that for me, was, and now is, the worst part of any type of surgery...

Hang in there.. if you want to chat.. PM me.. I'm laid up too..

What pain meds did you get? I had mine done like 10 years ago so I'm sure there are more drugs out there but I had Mepergan Fortis and I didn't hurt at all. I just took the meds as much as I could as soon as I got home and slept 3 days straight and didn't hurt at all. Call your doctor and see if you can get more (or better) drugs if you are still hurting. All four of mine were impacted and removed at the same time and I didn't experience any pain at all, just a 3 day long sleep.

The pain meds I have are something like "Hydrocordone Bartritrate" I think that's how it's spelled. It hurts like a bitch, but it's subsiding a LITTLE. Before they were removed, 2 of them had leaks down into the tooth and made the entire gum area above them sensitive. If I didn't have them removed when I did, they could've gotten infected while impacted in the gum. Where those two were is where I'm the most sensitive. I managed to lightly brush my teeth. That didn't feel very good, but I got it done. Maybe I'm just a big ol' weenie and this is how it's supposed to hurt, but DAMN!

Ahhh they gave you codeine... strong, but probably not strong enough..

Mine were impacted as well.. badly.. and they had to dig in my mouth as well.. NOT fun..

    Hang in there..

I got Vicodin...and to be honest, Codeine worked much better than Vicodin. Like I said...the most important thing you can do right now is to take a Vicodin. 3 1/2 hours after you take your Vicodin, you take an Ibuprofen. 3 1/2 hours after you take your Ibuprofen, you take another Vicodin. It keeps the pain at bay. It also helps keep the swelling down. Put the cold packs on and leave them on for as long as you can. On the third day, switch to hot packs.

I'm telling you...I lived through 3 days of dry socket (didn't know it was dry socket at first) and the switching off of the meds and the heat packs really kept the pain at bay.

If this pain does not subside by your third day...or gets worse, go back to the dentist. What I found was that if I drank something...my one socket hurt like a mother fucker. Same thing if I breathed air through my mouth...all of my teeth on the right side of my mouth would start aching. I found out that it's because the blood clot is 1) not enough or 2) popped out and the nerve is more exposed...which is why it's so painful. It's more common to happen in teeth that the dentist had to saw out (which yours, obviously did). I had my right wisdom wrapped on my jawbone...so that's the one that I had the problem with.

Just don't ignore the pain (like I did) thinking that it'll eventually get better. If you have dry socket, go get it taken care of. No need to be in more pain than necessary.

Thanks for the info VG and Gynger, y'all are awesome! The pain is subsiding, however I still look like a cabbage patch doll. I woke up this morning in theworst pain yet, butI took some Advil, put on some ice packs, and I was fine within a half-hour. I rinsed with the syringe and salt water and I'm doing better. It's very slowly getting better. It seems to be the worst throughout the night and in the morning. Thanks for your support guys, I love this forum. It has some of the wisest people.

Tell them you want Mepergan Fortis and start taking it as soon as you get home and every so many hours (whatever it says on the bottle). That was the advice i was given and it worked for me. You'll probably need someone to wake you up to tell you to take your meds though, but it's worth it. I had NO PAIN! I know nothing about pain meds really but I know this shit is pretty strong.

Venus!! SOMEONE!! Help! Ok, I've read some stuff about it, and heard my mom and the doctor talk about it; but I'm still lost. Can someone talk to me like I'm 3 and explain the dry socket thing. What kind of pressure or suction it takes to cause it, and what it feels like when it happens? The swelling's gone down, I still have the normal pain over the removal sites; but my the joints in my jaw hurt like a mofo. I can't open my mouth very wide without really bad shooting pains. I'm to where I can eat soft solid foods, it's just getting the stuff in my mouth. I can't open more than about 2 inches without pain. It feels like my jaw muscles are constantly fatigued (like your muscles are the day after a kick-ass work out). Can anyone help me out? I hope I'm not on the way to a case of TMJ.

Here's a good website with answers to your additional questions:

You have hydrocodone, which is generic Vicodin.

VenusGoddess, Gynger and others gave you lots of good advice.

omg...i'm so scared to get my wisdom teeth out now. I have to get them done soon, b/c there wasn't enough room in my mouth so they only came up 1/2 way and it hurts!! And i'd get all 4 of them too.

is there anything i could take before i go in there, i hate needles and freak out when i see the large needles the dentists have. any ideas? I really don't wanna pass out in the dentists office. The workers in there are hot and that would be embarassing.

Hannah, my oral sugeon gave me a valium the day of my pre-op consult. It was in a little manilla envelope. He told me to take that along with 2 Advil on an empty stomach 30 minutes before the surgery was to be performed. It helps calm you down and relax your body beforeall that happens. I too am dreadfully afraid of of needles and started to hyperventilate when I walked in and sawall the tools and the IV ready to be inserted. Then the assistants put the nitrus on me and the valium kicked in and the last thing I remember is him saying "we're about to put the IV in. I don't even remember the IV being inserted. Just ask if they give you a pre-op valium.

Make sure if your taking Ibuprofen and Hydrocodone or Vicodin, DO NOT TAKE TYLENOL. If you look at the product make up you'll see its already part tylenol and you wouldn't want to overdose on it. Good Luck!

DSU, it's probably too late for this advice but it may help others out there still needing their teeth pulled...

I got all 4 of mine out a few months ago. I had several bags of frozen peas which I strapped to my face with an ace bandage. I didn't get any swelling and took pain meds round the clock for the first several days. My husband just got all 4 of his out 2 weeks ago, and ended up strapping on peas too. He also didn't have any swelling.

Great advice from Venus. If you are still in any sort of major discomfort, call your doctor and get in today. Even if they say everything looks good, they can at least give you better pain medication. Everyone's pain tolerance is different, and some meds work better for some people.

Hope you feel better soon, k.

When I had mine out I was so TERRIFIED they put me on nitrous. Apparently I'm one of the few that it doesn't relax. I started to freak out and think I was dying and couldn't just open my mouth to say take it off of me. Finally they saw my heart rate going way up (cuz I thought I was dying and was freaking out) and they stopped it. But when the doctor came in and stuck in the stuff to knock me out I blinked and it was over. then I took my pain pills for 3 days and slept through the worst of it.

DSB, I hope you are okay. I don't recall anything like that. I just remember no straws or sucking and I was terrified of what would happen so I didn't suck anything and did okay. Call your doctor!
