    Angry Head Lice !! ARGH!

I shower every day and wash my hair every second day (if I'm not working). It seems my fears that I have had head lice ever since I came back from my last work trip in Melbourne are true. I put my cat's "flea comb" thru my hair today and found quite a few: nits and adults.

I thought I was just going crazy or something due to scratching my scalp and thinking that things were crawling thru my hair. (I'm not infested as the scratching, etc, isn't that bad.. I think I'm at the 'beginning' stage still..)

None-the-less, I'm posting as I havn't had head lice.. well.. since I was really really young.. and don't know how to 'cure' myself of it as an adult.

Are there any products that I can buy ? You can suggest products that are available in USA.. as they might be available here in Australia...

    Can anyone assist me?

BTW, I keep my cats's flea comb and brushes cleaned well so it was hygenic for me to use it as a "lice comb"....

You're going to need to get RID shampoo (or something similar).

Then you're going to need to pull off all of your bedding...wash it with a lice soap (in the washer) spray your bedding down with the lice spray...vacuum and throw the bag away immediately and spray your carpets. Be sure to check your cat, as well.

It's a pain in the ass to do all of this stuff...but you need to make sure that you get rid of them while you are getting rid of them out of your hair. Otherwise, you'll have to do it all all over again.

I'm thinking I got it from when I stayed at the backpacker/hostel during my last work trip. I'm thinking one or both of the blankets were infested as the sheets incl. pillow are removed (and washed) once the person leaves (yet the blanket stays).

It sucks. I went to the chemist... I bought "BanLice mousse".

That sucks! I'm sorry you have to go through that pain in the ass. There are OTC products you can use and I think you might want to check with your vet in regards to the cat. Just be glad you didn't get shingles aka skin lice... that can take weeks to clear up.

Bedding and hair ties that might be infested are all being soaked in water for 2 hours using Napisan Oxyaction. As for the cats, we washed the flea comb in boiling water then inspected them esp. the medium haired cat (my flatmate's cat)... they are both okay. No fleas, no eggs, just dandraff on one of them.

I'm going to have to get my doona dry cleaned (*groan* an extra cost I didn't want) and buy carpet stuff so that the carpets will be cleaned.

What really sucks is that I have long thick hair... a blessing usually in re: work as alot of people comment on how lovely it is! That "Banlice" stuff I'm leaving in for 20 minutes instead of the 10 minutes as per the can's instructions as I have long hair.

You may find that the lice are immune to all of the products you buy from the chemists - I only found KP24 to work - 10 years ago now, so it might not anymore and its NASTY stuff!!!!!!!! At the schools now on the Gold Coast anyway they recomend for headlice that you cover your hair with just a normal hair conditioner and leave it for 20-30 minutes then comb with a nit comb. The conditioner stunns the lice and loosens the eggs I assume and it wont poison you or damage you like some of the chemical treatments can.
Tea tree helps repel lice - so does eating alot of garlic, but thats not always possible when you work with people. Theres also a spray made from some sort of bark which is avaliable in Aus - dont know the name, but chemist should know! It's supposed to repell lice.
I use tea tree soap when travelling and so far I've not had problems touch wood! - Did you know that there is a major bed bug problem in Sydney - from backpackers to 5 star apparently, it's pretty nasty, lol!

I made a post about my son getting them a couple of months ago. I'm sorry to hear this. All of the above suggestions are excellent, but especially the one about washing EVERYTHING, preferably in hot water. Vacuum your matresses too, as well as spray them. It was a horrid pain in the ass, and my daughters got them too but we finally got it taken care of. Just one more hassle you don't need, I'm sure. Sometimes I'm glad I shave my head!

Gosh my daughter kept getting head lice...it drove me nuts! I worried i would get it too, but didn't.

Yes Rid comes in a package size too! You get the hair treatment and the bedding spray as well. A few days later we treated her head again, and GONE.

The poor girl she kept getting it from was a cute little thing, they played close in school, and shared hair head bands. she always had lice it seemed, as my daughter said she was scratching her head alot, so the teachers did head checks often, but i later found out her parents lost her to the state for many reasons i guess. Sad.

It's the next day and I'm not scratching. The only lice I've found using the flea comb (which is basically like the lice combs sold at the chemist) are dead lice. I'm going to give my hair another treatment of Banlice on Friday before I leave for Kalgoorlie.

I'm taking my sleeping bag and my own pillow. Everything has been washed in water including me

So far so good. No scratching today.
