So, how DO you find out the local laws? Where are they usually listed? (I know zoning is one type, but Oregon doesn't have adult business zoning laws, thank God -- I think said zoning laws are responsible for a lot of sleaze in clubs, as far as I've seen in other states.)

Finding out what laws apply to you:

    1. Federal. You're not going to see much on the federal level. Generally, it's things like First Amendment issues where courts decide what is and is not protected. This won't help you much as a dancer, unless you're interested in challenging a particular statute or ordinance as unconstitutional.

    2. State. Look at your state statutes. I see you're in Oregon. Those statutes are available . The state laws that generally apply to what dancers do include things like public indecency, obscenity, and (if you're in a liquor club) state liquor commission regulations.

    3. County and city. Counties and cities often have ordinances that prohibit certain conduct. From what I see on the state site, Portland has parts in three counties: , , and . Check the County and websites to see if they have information about local laws. If not, try asking the city attorney or clerk (their contact info should be on the site) how to get a hold of the laws.

Really, though, the best thing to do is ask a lawyer. It may cost you a few hundred bucks, but there are many good reasons to make that investment. You can make that money back dancing in less time then it will take you to find the laws and read them yourself (which sometimes can be very time-consuming). Unless you're a lawyer or law student yourself, a lawyer is much better at reading and understanding laws than you are. (That's not an insult. You're much better at dancing than I am! ) Plus, if a lawyer gives you bad advice, under certain circumstances you may be able to sue for malpractice.

Another thing is your peace of mind. You'd probably be much more comfortable about whether what you are doing is legal if you'd found out from someone who figures that stuff out for a living.

Cops can lie their asses off to get you to do something or "talk". They don't have to say shit as far as their occupation is concerned. Cops do have to carry a badge at all times though (atleast in AZ) and most undercover will have a special wallet with a flap in it that conceals their badge when they open it.

Just remember though, the cop is just a little indian doing his job. It's the Leutinants, Chiefs, and City Council Goverment that are the assholes. The rationalization is that they are interfering with prostitution and drug rings.
