Default "Debunking a Movement" re: Scientology Aug. 4, '05 Pasadena Weekly

I'm not sure if this is okay here, or if it should be in Poo, but as the last thread about this topic was here, the article can be found at

    http://www.pasadenaweekly.com/featur...e/feature.html

An interesting aspect near the end of the article is the church "outing," as a homosexual, an attorney who gave his time, pro bono, to someone the church sued a number of times. This, in an apparent effort to destroy this man's life. I just thought, due to other sub-boards I've read on SW, it makes for an interesting discussion when one claims to be both opposed to religious discrimination and discrimination related to sexual preference. Tough call when you have a case like this!

Well, I do have to say that, like every other religion in the entire history of mankind, Scientology has the same problems that every other religion has. It's simply called Human Interpretation.

I say, whatever you find in your life that helps you be the kind of person that you are striving to be...do it. Do it until it doesn't suit or fit in your life anymore.

I'm more into the "metaphysical". I believe I'm immortal. More in the sense that my soul--the essence of my being--will never die. I believe in past lives. I believe that we are all here for an experience. I believe that we are all here to find out who we really are...and in the quest to find who we really are...we must find out who we are not.

It's not the religion that is bad...or lacking...it is the people who choose to focus on all the "wishy washiness" of it and use it as an excuse for someone's behavior. If what this "religion" is doing is true...then it is most likely not in one's best interest to participate in. However, it doesn't make what they are teaching bunk. It merely means that the Human Interpretation that goes along with anything in life needs to be readjusted.

Life is about experience. It's about learning who you are and what you are capable of. I would, personally, much rather spend my time learning about who I am as opposed to how I am going to burn in hell for my free choice, if it doesn't "follow the path" that was chosen for me.

Scientology does not interest me...there are some things within Scientology that I just do not "click" with. But, that does not mean that it's not right for other people. The biggest problem with most people today is that they cannot let others have their own experiences without judgement.

    PhaedrusZ,

What happened to the person in that article is a standard operating practise of Scientology. It's even codified within their organization. They do a lot worse to those who have been part of their religion that then publicly expose them for what they do since the "church" uses what they gathered during their "clearing" sessions (a.k.a. crude lie detector tests) to blackmail them quiet or destroy them if blackmail doesn't work. This is nothing new for Scientology. It has operated this way since its beginning. Read "L. Ron Hubbard: Messiah or Madman" by Corydon Hubbard, his son.

I can only go from the info in the article at this point, until I get a chance to either find the book Pumpkin Pie has mentioned here at the library or purchase it from a local bookstore.

Re: "The biggest problem with most people today is that they cannot let others have their own experiences without judgement," the Church of Scientology itself has repeatedly violated this concept, going by the Pasadena Weekly article. In particular, the article also noted the attorney was falsely accused of being a pedophile. If they actually did some of the things described in this article, it makes me wonder why they shouldn't be stripped of their tax-exempt status. I suppose the same could also be said, though, about those Catholic churches which still refuse to provide information needed to prosecute pedophile priests. Ironically, the only "church" I've found while cruising websites, which rejects the idea of tax-exempt status for all religions, including even their own, was from an introductory website to satanism.

Thank you for mentioning this book here, & I will have to read it, but it is gonna put my "to read" stack near a "mile high" now(sigh)!
