    Default Give yourself a perm?

has anyone here given themselves a perm for their hair? i'm getting so bored with how i look, and feel as though without using this hairspray called Big Sexy Hair (or any other good volumizing spray), i have absolutely NO body in my hair. I know that using the spray isn't good...nor is teasing my hair..which i do too often. it's starting to actually break my hair.

i know that you can get different types of perms. the bigger the roller, the less curly the hair will actually appear. my question is: have any of you ever given yourself an at-home perm? what perm solution did you use? what size curlers?

i have pretty big curlers. i think that they are about 2 inches in diameter. i figure that if i put about 6 in my hair, i could get a good "body wave" going on. for those of you who don't know what a body wave is, it's basically a perm not for curls, but for body in the hair. here again, though, i'm scared of messing up my hair. at the same time, i don't want to waste money on a perm at the salon...especially since there have been 2 incidences when i was younger where i specifically TOLD them a body wave...and they ended up making me look like a french poodle

I recommend you go to a salon, or at least a beauty school where the hairdresser is being supervised and they have salon tools...the last girl I knew who did her own perm fried her hair off literally..she came to school with broken hair at the nape of her neck.....
Beauty schools will cut you a break on price if you bring the perm chemicals in....

My advice - STAY AWAY FROM THE PERM. NO NO NO! Please dont do it... they never end up as a pretty body wave... or rarely... and with your hair being so fine its probably best to just stick to the curlers OR if you want more body you can get extentions... like the clip in ones... you dont have to get length just to make your hair thicker... and they wont ruin your hair..

Yeah, I'd go with clip-in extensions for body. How about those As Seen On TV Leopard Print Cotton Rollers? They are pretty small in diameter, gentle on your hair, and they really work. I think they'd work great on your hair--minus the damaging perm chemicals.

Yes please no at home perms....you will regret it soo bad. Like MM said go to a salon ..better yet I advise a salon that has been in business longer. My best friend got a perm and she had stick straight hair - she looked like a poodle afterwards. There has to be something where you can get a a very light perm.
Talk to a few stylists b/c if they mess up it will takes a few months to wash out.

A friend of mine permed her own hair with this home perming kit (from Wal-Mart I think) and it looked fine, but she's pretty experienced with hair and what not, so she had an advantage.

i dont know. Perms have come a LONG way ! They are no longer AS damaging to your hair.

BUT PLEASE GO TO A PROFESSIONAL! who knows what they are doing and ask ask ask tons of questions b/c you only have one head of hair!

i am considering a perm myself. i have very long blond hair that is a bit thin. I did the great lengths extensions, but it took me about 3 hrs everyday to style it w/ curl. Plus the quality of hair sucked in comparison to my healthy hair.

my hair is naturally really curly...It would take me up to 3 hours to get it straight..I was tired of the same look everyday..so I went to get a perm, to make it straight..I've asked if once I get a perm if I could curl it back up if I wanted...They told me yes..but I've tried putting mousse in my hair, and it just got frizzy, I tried a curling iron and it would get flat after 10 minutes...I would never perm my hair again..it's a torture ...but if you do plan on getting a perm, get it done by a professional because you don't wanna wake up with all your hair in your pillow...

Couple of years back(when I was 14), I had went to a beauty salon to get a body wave. It look great for about two months, then my hair looked like total shit. Like a bird's nest, or a stack of hay....just horrible! Then I had to get my hair cut, up to the top of my ears. That short of a bob, shaved in the back. Ew, looked like a boy back then. LOL. That's how awful it got.

I have straight thin hair also. I use Sammy's volumizing shampoo & mousse. Works good, but sometimes it makes it feel hard....I use that once in a blue.

Vo5 has this good Volumizing shampoo & conditioner....I LOVE IT! And it's cheap. When my hair gets dried up, it looks so full with tons of body.

    Yes...for thin hair it's awesome.

Pantene, isn't that great for fine thin hair. I do use it once in a while when my ends look crappy. But it always leaves my hair flat & I feel bald after. LOL.
