Default Can I be addicted to shopping? (LONG)

I did really good... I mean really really good - I didnt buy any clothes or shoes for TWO MONTHS. This is a record for someone who would shop just about everyother day... whether it was a $10 shirt or a $250 pair of jeans...

I lost the battle yesterday. Day started off good... went through my closet and took a bunch of clothes to Crossroads (they buy your clothes). And that was the start of my demise. I spotted a pair of Yanuk Jeans for $65. SIXTY FIVE! I couldnt believe it! So I start searching the designer jean rack - A pair of Seven Jeans for $50! OMG... Im in love - try them on (with my friends 2 year old in tow) and they fit perfect. So Im thinking this is ok... theyll buy my clothes.. Ill get 50% of the profit in trade.. perfect... worked well.. I even got $11 cash back.

Well, on the way to take baby back to mommy we have to pass the mall.. its CALLING to me... I swear - that glossy looking blacktop and the glass roof... so my philosophy - I DID promise to buy Ali a toy and there IS a toy store in the mall... soooo... lets go.

I always park by Nordstroms... the toy store HAPPENS to be at the OTHER end of the mall... thats ok I think to myself... Ill just look... I can do this. I mean Ive done so well these last 2 months and I dont really NEED anything. (Altho I HAVE been wanting a pair of cute wedge sandals lately)

So we park - I grab the stroller and we go. I did really well... just looking until I hit Charlotte Russe... I love their accessories.. walk out - I only spend $45. That was good (only $45 because nothing FIT me but still.. Im feeling good) We keep walking... there are some HOT guys in here and Im kinda wishing Ali would quit trying to wiggle out of her stroller but this is a good thing too - means I cant shop if she starts throwing a fit right?

Next stop - I get all the way to the toy store and Ali picks a couple things... only $32 here... OK, so technically since I got that $11 from Crossroads Ive only spent $67. Now, I really want to just "look" at the shoes at Steve Madden. I swear... just look. So I start walking back to the elevator (SM is downstairs) Well, I forgot this is a different mall so I reach the other side and realize I have to walk through Nordstroms to get to an elevator. GREAT... Mac and Shoes and Designer Clothes and AHHH... its all so overwhelming...

I made it past the designer stuff as Ali is getting chocolate chip cookie on the bottom of my skirt because she wants OUT!!!!!!! as she yells it of her stroller. Did I forget to mention the $3 cookie (since when is a cookie three dollars?!) that I got her so I could MAKE it to Steve Madden?

Anywho - we get downstairs and Im negotiating the maze of makeup and perfume stands and there it is. Like a glowing log of gold. The MAC counter. Well, I AM almost out of Studio Fix and I needed a new gold eyeshadow and I wanted to try that black liner stuff... and the list goes on... and I think... I HAVE deprived myself these last 2 months so I deserve it right? I leave the counter with a $300 Credit Card Slip tucked neatly in my cute little MAC bag.

OK, well, maybe I can just look at shoes HERE and save the hassle of a kid yelling OUT! (which started again after we left the makeup counter - oh and the 2 year old now looks like a damn drag queen) Anything to keep her QUIET!

So we get to shoes... I spot them... OMG they are SOOOO cute. Wedge slip ons with beading and a shiny bronze heel. Im in LOVE... oh and the one next to them are kinda cute too... dont know when Id wear them but I mean it HAS been TWO MONTHS since I bought shoes soooo.... Ill take them both. They were SOOO cheap. Only $118 for TWO pairs of shoes.

So my total is now up to around $500 (but dont forget the $11 I received from Crossroads.. so I did MAKE some money today)

Since those two pairs of shoes were so cheap I decide it cant hurt to look at SM. I mean what if they have a pair I like better? I can always walk back to Nordys and return the other pair... yea, I think... this will be ok....

As we walk to SM I forget that Bebe is directly accross... its calling me. Now, its been a LONG time since Ive shopped here... I mean, Im not really a frilly showoffy Bebe type girl BUT I did buy that 2nd pair of shoes with nothing to wear them with so I go into Bebe. Of course the baby brings the girls in throngs... shes so cute! is she yours? can I help you? blah blah blah. I proceed to show one girl the shoes and she helps.. oh yea... as much as a commissioned girl at Bebe would. Damnit... another $272 later... but I DO have an outfit to go with the shoes... right?

OK... this trip to Crossroads to RECEIVE a bit of money is getting a little PRICEY!

But the reason I CAME to the DAMN MALL is STEVE MADDEN and there it is. As I walk out of Bebe with a stroller loaded with little presents to muah it calls me. Shoes, shoes, shoes. God I LOVE this store. As soon as I walk over Im in heaven (and my bank card is screaming NOOOOOOOO!!!!) I see them... the cute little wedges of my dreams... the ones Ive been longing for ever since I saw Jessica Simpson in a pair like them... theyre sooo cute. Blue stripes and so cute and only $69. Then I saw the other pair called Darlings.. a bit more... $100 but so cute for a night out.. and they have my size. OK .. Im done.

I practically RUN from the mall... strip Ali in all her chocolate glory into her seat and drive to Sarahs... where she proceeds to lecture me about saving.

Moral of the story.... I started off the day like a good little girl. I was going to go to Crossroads and make a few bucks... but I failed. I blame the Yunka jeans. I really do... because if it werent for them I wouldnt have gotten into buying mode. And I feel maybe it is better to buy something everyother day rather than going on a binge like I did. But I dont feel too bad. I mean - yea, I spent $1000 in a few hours but I DID go TWO MONTHS deprived of the mall and broken up into 8 weeks of buying something 3 times a week it was like I spent a miniscule $40 (7 minutes of work) each day... ok.. so its not THAT bad, is it?

Sarah doesnt think so... and I had to go to the store and buy a bottle of Spray in Wash for Alis clothes too (she was out) so we can add $4 to my total...

All in all Im now sitting here the next day looking at all my little presents and wanting to go party this weekend in all my new clothes, shoes and makeup. So I guess that will be another few bucks to add to my tirade but I had fun and it was SOOO worth it....

Well Congrats I guess on the 2 months anyway.

Have you tried looking other places for cheaper prices for some of this stuff?

We have a store that sells Seven jeans for $24.99 a pair, and I get MAC pigments online for $22.50 for two bottles.

Anyway good luck with the fight and try online shopping, sometimes it is cheaper (especially with gas prices nowadays).

Well, I didn't read your whole post. The way I deal is not going in stores. Staying off of shopping sites (as much as possible). I def. was addicted to shopping, have cut way way back (for yrs. now)> I do slip up now & then, but nowhere near where I was & when I do it's mostly Home Depot or nice groceries. I really, deeply regret spending what I did yrs. back. Especially now, w/my situation. Most of the stuff I ended up giving away, or getting pennies on the dollar in the one consignment place that will actually take some of my stuff. It's better to try to save. Just my exp./opinion.

Wow, i have the same kinda problem too, kinda

But i did just find Platos closet, kinda like the place you were talking about, I bought the brand seven jeans for $20

Maybe if you HAVE to shop give yourself a budget, of how much to spend a week.

I also ripped up my credit cards.

It's even worse here in Manhattan, so I feel your pain.

I just try to ask myself "where am I gonna wear this?". My life here in NYC is fairly low-key, so I tend to buy a lot of basics. I got out to clubs about twice a week, so I will splurge on something cool and non-spandexy (what flies in clubs in other cities does NOT work in NYC) to go to Bungalow 8 or Marquee. Dinners at good restaurants happen a few times a month and I have a few outfits for this too.

I'm trying to focus on quality vs. quantity, but quality doesn't come cheap in this city and I have expensive taste. It's not too bad though. When I can't answer the question of where I'll wear an item, I just admire it's beauty and move right along...

A girl's gotta have some good shoes and bags though!

How funny! I never shop, but today I dropped $30 on makeup (a fortune for me) and $20 on rhinestone jewelry from eBay, and bid on a ton of other eBay jewelry and a pair of Baby Phat jeans which probably won't even fit me. It was my first time on eBay. I don't know what happened with the makeup - I hardly ever buy any makeup at all and certainly not $30 worth. I was just there for cotton balls and walked out with highlighter, lip liner, foundation, and a bunch of other stuff.

Lol I know all about Plato's Closet, but the place I'm talking about is not a store like that. All the clothes where I'm talking about are brank new factory overstocks. Hella cheap prices. I got hubby an A&F pair of jeans for $19.99 and an A&F long sleeve button down for $14.99. All brand new, never been used, and some of the stuff the stores are selling for up to 5x as much.

ROFL!!! Ebay will do that to you! It did for me; I mean hell I have over $1,000 in loose gems in my fishtank from Ebay buying sprees. And they are just little stones too, nothing over .10ct.

Try to buy from only a few select people and only once a week, and them you will be able to save on shipping.

I dont think youre and addict - hell you lastest 2 months! Its ok to spend on yourself that is only if it is within your means. Could you really afford all the stuff? If the answer is "yes" then youre fine its only when you are seriously going into debt. If it was "no" and this has happend before perhaps you need to ask yourself a few questions before buying things.

Where am I gonna wear this and how many times? guesstimate here
Do I have another one of these?

Besides, after a long time without spending its ok to indulge yourself, you worked for it.

According to that A&E show "Intervention" there is such a thing as shopping addiction. One is shopping to try and fill an emotional hole or need. Kind of like how "big" people over eat to try and make themselves feel good.

I love shopping, I don't care if I'm at walmart or the forum shops.
    I buy something new daily.

Is it bad when you get a euphoric feeling when buying groceries?

Not if the prices were low.

Then you've made a good kill. (Or the hunt was successful from the cost/benefit perspective)

I love to shop too and if I went two months without it I might spend that much also. The good things I see reading your post is you found a lot of great sale items. You may not find good deals like that again any time soon so I say if something is perfect, buy it. Sometimes I'll go shopping and find nothing that fits right or that I like and other times it is like everything was made for me and it's on sale. The only real problem is if you can't really afford it all. You don't want to go into debt buying clothes and crap, but if you can afford it I say go for it. Life's too short not to dress cute!
