Exclamation Slave 2 the Grind ...

Why are we all slave's 2 the grind ?
I feel like we should get paid 2 work ,not paying for gross people to beg us to have sex with them & try to touch our privates !!!
When I think about the real situation ,I question my sanity.
I pay almost $ 100 a night to work around sweaty drunken pigs ,
sexual harrasment , smoke , hard labor ,no health insurance or benifits, much less a futuer( bad speller, sorry)
its like if we don't grind our knees to a bloody pulp on stage for a fucking dollar to pay some fat rich pigg so we can keep our 'dream job" that society frowns upon.
We have skills being a dancer ,no one can jump on stage and be a professional entertainer. It takes time to learn this job as well as great physicall endurance and a hell of an attitude .

hrm, I don't look at it that way

I see this as an excellent opportunity. The fees suck, but we are independent contractors. We are in control of our destiny as well. Don't feel like ou are being victimized and you will make the most of this job. It's like winning the lotto, in my opinion.

Every job has a down side to it. I just try not to look at it negatively is what helps me. Ha, I feel like you Gianna after a bad night. This business has its ups and downs and you may be in a mental slump right now.
I take it one day at a time and make the most of it while Im there. Make my money goals and leave.

You might do better as a bartender or cocktailer at a hotel. They pay up to $15 an hour plus benefits plus tips and some states are unionized. You get some of the benefits of a dancer's lifestyle without the crappy house fees and degrading interaction with customers. You might also like catering. You get to work big events without the aforementioned hassles.

Ain't too bad. Not for me. I love my current job.

The other day, I got a call from a ballet company (finally!) that they had an opening, would I be interested in auditioning? I lied. I told them I would be there.
They should have called me two years ago. If they had, I would leaped into the band wagon and struggled on that puny salary trying to convince myself that I was an artist.

Was dumb back then, baby, real dumb. Probably still not too smart, but at least my eyes are open now. They were closed back then.

I sincerely hope that is not what dancing becomes for me, Gianna. (love that name, btw.) I have had so many crappy jobs with abusive managers, etc etc etc that I can only look forward to this. Is it possible to balance my idealism with reality in this business? guess I wont know until I get hired and dance. But its gotta be better than any of the following...

    1. two hours of dishes at a grocery store deli a day including fishing dead, bloated roaches out of the sink. Suddenly, those heels don't seem so damn uncomfortable anymore.

    2. Driving a 45 minute commute each way to my all-time crappy job, messing up my car on the construction site, and not getting compensated for either gas, time, mileage, or repairs. Suddenly, I can't wait to make my own decisions on what to invest in my job, be it costumes, shoes, hygeine, etc.

    3. Working 40 hours a week for a grocery store, AFTER completing my undergraduate degree at the top of my class, and not even clearing 300 a week... Suddenly, I could care LESS about the stigma of being a stripper. Call me smart. Call it a means to an end. I'm over it. Move out of my way and let me dance. I want more money than what "normal" or "acceptable" jobs can offer me.

    4. Working three jobs at a time, barely having time to change uniforms in between, coming home just to sleep or shower, all to put a few hundred into savings a month. I cant wait to work far less than 60-70 hrs for once and clear more than i was making in all those hours.

When I hit hard times dancing, i'm gonna try to remember why i left other kinds of jobs for a 1-2 year stint in the dancing world. I"m sure we all have our reasons for leaving other jobs for dancing.

I'm not looking forward to paying to work, but I'm looking forward to the bottom line at the end of each night. Good luck to all of you out there who are feeling a bit disenchanted.

It's easier to see it negatively when you're in the middle of a New Orleans summer slump! I know, summer business sucks in a "special" kind of way in NOLA. When you're making money it doesn't seem nearly so bad. Hang in there, fall is coming

Not to me! Now that I travel for my work, I feel like I'm doing this part time not full time. I love that... I also love being able to choose where to go for work. I'm NOT stuck in one location, at one particular club. I can (and do) travel for work.... and since I'm self-employed which means I AM MY OWN BOSS (that is definately one aspect I love about dancing)... I pretty am (to a certain extent) in control of how much or little I work and therefore my income.

Whenever dancing starts to 'get me down', I try to remember that I generally am doing something that I suits me to a tea than any previous form of employment..... and that even tho' most of mainstream society (and my folks) may 'look down' on me for it.. I do not. I don't shout it from the roof tops, I am discrete however at the same time far from ashamed as it is a very legitmate and lucrative (if you have the skills/smarts/know-how) business.

I don't know of too many other 'professions' (as that it is to me) where I can travel around my own country or even the world... not have to work 40+ hours every week to make $1000+ each week.... that has such great potential.

As for 'paying to work'... hairdressers, as far as I'm aware, do the same. They pay a 'hire fee' (or rent) for a chair in a salon... we're no different. It is just the way you look at it... you don't have to pay that particular club to work there... you aren't contracted to that club.. you can move and work at another club for a period if you so desire...
