Exclamation At what point do you retire?

I've noticed a lot of girls lately that feel the need to retire. I've also seen the ones that should- you know, the older ones who just can't compete with the younger ones, and they don't do extras.
What jobs are out there for the girls? What exactly do they do? I work in the office here at Penthouse Executive Club here in Manhattan, and I love it. I get to still be a part of the environent, but I don't have to take off my clothes or work such late hours. I get to hang with the custys, but the dancers entertain them---It totally rocks. (and by the way, we are looking for someone to work in the office here, so if you people know anyone looking to work, PM me and I'll give you the info!)-
But I'm just curious- what is out there for an entertainer to do after she retires?

well if you didnt go to school then youre probably sol on finding anything that pays remotely what you made as a dancer.

I have my bachelors and am doing my masters online so in a year and half when Im 25-26ish Ill be ready to start my own business, or get something that pays above average.

Well in my own case I decided that it was time to retire from live dancing when the customers expecting to be 'entertained' no longer outnumbered the customers expecting to be 'sexually stimulated'. The increasing likelihood of taking a 'bogus bust' was a contributing factor as well. Another factor was the fact that, while I still look fairly young on the outside, I sure started to feel old on the inside - aches, pains, dead tired etc. after a full week of dancing, something that I used to be able to do without even thinking about it and then go out and party besides !

As far as what jobs are out there for retired dancers, in my own case I don't NEED a job. Between exercising financial discipline while I was dancing full time, and making/managing investments reasonably well, I have enough investment income to coast on for the rest of my life if I continue to exercise financial discipline. Of course I was lucky enough to spend most of my full time dancing years in an economic and cultural climate where dancers could earn very good money without resorting to 'extras'.

Your comment implies that younger dancers have an inherent advantage over 'older' dancers. I would point out that many upscale club customers appreciate 'maturity' in a dancer, as long as she's kept up with her workouts, diet, plastic surgery etc. such that her outward appearance isn't objectionable in any way.

As to 'life after dancing' possibilities, dancers are inherently good salespeople, and especially good 'closers'. These skills directly transfer to such straight jobs as real estate sales, auto sales, PR work etc. Dancing experience can also directly apply to other straight jobs where the correlation isn't so obvious, such as casino dealer.

In my own case I have a degree in Respiratory Therapy and have kept up my licenses in both NY and NJ, although I haven't worked in this field in a very long time. But between AIDS patients, red ink in local budgets, being forced to work weekends and holidays etc., I doubt that I would ever go back to working in this field even though certain parts of the job were immensely satisfying. The only reason I mention this is that, in today's global economy, the fact that a person has a degree is no guarantee that they'll be able to land a job which pays significantly more than a non-degree job, which has acceptable working conditions and risk factors, etc. Thus any younger dancers considering the relative virtues of going to college and dancing part time, versus dancing full time and banking while the money is out there, need to do some serious 'homework' regarding the true future value of their degree versus the potential dancing income they are giving up in order to obtain it at a time when there dancer earnings potential is at its peak.

That's the good thing, to try and get educated.
Even here in my office, we don't hire anyone without SOME sort of education- you'd be surprised how many girls come in here and can't use a computer!!! Or they fill out an application incorrectly! I just don't get it. I think some people just lack common sense.

    Melonie-

I know that dancers are good sales people, and maybe you can help point me in the right direction.
We have a revolving position here (revolving because no one can keep the job) for a Marketing Coordinator. Someone who can speak to customers on the phone and in person, someone who has computer skills, someone who can come up with creative ideas for the club. (there's more to it, but no need to get into that right now)-
See, I'd prefer to have an x-entertainer, someone who may not have a degree, but is educated and witty in the stripper-customer world.

This is where maybe (hopefully) you can help: WHERE DO I FIND THESE GIRLS????

When I first started in the busniess a few older dancers took me under their wings and stressed the impertance of going to school and not wasting my money, when I offically retire I will going into med school and have planned it so that I will not be in any debt at the start of it and will have my living expenses covered for the next 7 yrs ( school then residency ).....

Crissy that is IMHO an ideal way to do it, because A) you're not going to run up massive college loan debt, such that you can actually KEEP most of the money you earn once you start working in your chosen field, B) your degree will be current when you actually seek work in that field (versus getting a degree, continuing to dance for 10 years, and THEN attempting to find work in that field), and C) you'll be a more motivated, more serious student which translates into being more motivated and 'better at it' when you do start working in that field.

    A. I'm not looking for girls still dancing. This just doesn't work. The money will never be as good as dancing (especially here in NYC!)-
    B. We offer good pay here, and also you can make commission doing exactly what you love, entertaining your customers, just not taking off your clothes! It's the perfect situation for someone who CAN'T work a different straight job, because maybe they don't have the education or qualifications.
    C. I don't want to hire the flakey traveling type anyway. I need someone who still have the taste of money on their tongue, not the girl who's screwing the guy who is taking her cruising the Med- ahhh... those were the days! ha ha

    Any other suggestions?

the thing is so many girls today trash education. Ive seen it here on this site. Its the most important thing you can do for yourself. One thing they can never take from you is your degree. It does matter. When I get my MBA next year it will open many doors to executive level jobs.

Saving and investing is the next best thing. If youre not saving at least 1/3 of your gross earnings (gross means before taxes for those that didnt know this) youre also hurting yourself. Ive managed to save alot. My savings account is just over 20k now. hen I quit Im hoping it will be 35-40k so I can have a year to build a business or put my degree to use.

The girls in the business who say these arent important are the ones that will be wishing they had them when theyre borken down, broke and need to do fix jobs on their badly implanted silicone parts.

By December, I would get my Industrial Eingineering Degree. Damn, who would have belived it. And when I do, I leave all my past behind. Sometimes it got real bad, but somehow I lived through it.
Well, letis put it this way, it would not be something I would be telling my grandkids about around the fireplace. That is, if there are any grandkids or a fireplace for that matter.

Yes, education is important, but having a "degree" doesn't make you instatnly successful. I have seen many dumb people get their degree to go on and be a waitress at a steak house or whatever. They just didn't have what it takes to land the high paying jobs, but they got thier degree .

I think that is what some of the girls are talking about when they say that education isn't everything, it is only part of the success equation. My husband graduated with a computer science degree. Now he is building houses for a living because what used to pay $50+ an hour is now down to $15 (for tech support and IT possitions) due to outsourcing to India and other lower paying highly educated countries. He is back to making $50+ an hour as a construction contractor, but really his education had really almost nothing to do with how he makes his money now.

The ex dancers I know are now
*Cosmetologists (this is the biggest group)
    *real estate sales
    *Mortgage brokers
    *bar tenders
    *Cocktail waitress
*and I know a couple of writers

I do know one dancer who is going to school for her nursing degree,a nd should be done by spring. This is a great feild to go into as it has a big demand and pays very well!

Education is important especially if you want to work in a corporate environment. You need a degree even to be a receptionist these days.

Anyway, my point of retirement is when I can get a decent paying office job and/or my real estate career takes off. Also Melonie is so right about investments, it really pays to investigate the different options there.

^^ Nursing is huge especially here in CA. My mom is a nurse and does very very well. You can make alot of demands, there are sign on bonuses and referral money, not so great benefits though unless you are with a hospital. Hospitals pay more anyways.

Anyways, I knew a girl who was a fitness competitor and was studying to become an EMT then a nurse later on. I think there are alot more options for retired dancers out there ...they just gotta research. Hopefully, this semester I can go visit people in my field of work. Im going into foresics in 2010.

Anything health care related is going to be a big investment in your future. Teachers as well, even though currently, some areas don't pay well..

Education is the single most important thing that ANYONE should invest in.. forget the boobs.. invest in smarts. Just mho.

Education isvery important however.... for everyone a great corporate job isn't the reason for higher education. I have a bachelors degree and will be starting my masters work in the spring but my focus is not to continue my education in the hopes of scoring some office job where I can command big bucks. Some people simply like to learn and formal education is important to them. Of course the ability to command a higher salary matters to me but it is not first in my mind. My education can never be taken from me period whether I'm in a corporate position or still dancing... just another point of view.....

Education... I actually moved to the locale I am in to go to college... turned out the money wasn't there so I ended up working... that was when the internet was first taking off... I started doing internet programming that wasn't even being taught in school yet... still at it.... college would've been a huge waste of time for me professionally.

Personal fulfillment-wise, however, now that I am earning a good living I am thinking of going just because I want to learn.... I'd love to major in music and minor in French...

    (I hope this was't too off-topic)

I'm investing in my education right now--going into the medical field. I thought this thread was about at what AGE we retire; after how many years of dancing do we retire? I have a feeling that I will be doing this for 5 or more years to come. Even though by that time I should have a degree.

I never want to retire. I love my job. I'm going to keep doing it as long as my body physically allows me to do so.

I've been in the corporate world. I freaking HATED it.
