    Default Dancing and Spirituality

This is something that has been on my mind for a long time, I have never really spoken about it before or gotten any other dancers opinions.

    All about timing I guess

So how does your dancing affect your spirituality?

At times it seems as if the freedom (of time and money) helps the spiritual process. Allow you the time and the resources to do whatever it is that helps your inner journey.

But other times it seems that it hinders the process, holds you back becuase of the things you deal with nightly/daily at work. Attitudes, ego, sexual attachment from guys etc

Am I making sense or am I getting too out there? LOL

I totally understand what you are asking.

It helped that I made my own schedule...I went in and worked when I wanted to...that is the most important thing for me, because I easily feel "trapped" when I have to work manager required hours/days. I cannot function that way. It hurt when I dealt with some mean customers as I start questioning my own self. In a way it was good, because I learned a lot about myself during the process...but it also seemed to take a lot of my focus off of my soul-searching and placed it on "physical perfection".

I am much happier not dancing...but I would go back sporatically if needed. It was a wonderful experience and I don't regret doing it.

I used to be a very observant little Jewish wife. I always wore a hat once I was married, kept strict kosher, and followed the rules. Now I'm divorced and not very strict with what I eat, I'm having frequent kinky sex with a guy I have no intention of ever marrying, I hang out in swing clubs and strip clubs and bars, and am not above a little group sex when the opportunity arises. And this weekend I start dancing naked in public. Sometimes I get really guilty, and wonder if there is a hell. But for the most part, fuck it, I'm being who G-d made me to be.

I think you can discover just as much about your spiritual life through sex/erotica/dancing/whathaveyou as you can through anything. It's all in how you interpret your role and your experiences and how you use them to discover something new in your true self or society. That's just my humble opinion!

Thank you for asking this krys.

My maternal great-grandfather and grandmother were midwives. It occured to me that being a dancer falls into the "fountain of life" category along with midwives, that we help perpetuate life (through joy in beauty and sex.) I feel that I honor my heritage with my physical appearance and intelligence, which comes before pleasing any Gods.

The flip side of that is something my friend T. said when I told him I was a dancer: "I saw a picture of a stripper on stage & the customers looking at her. The woman was beautiful, the men were not."

I'm study philosophy at school, and one of the biggest factors towards 'happiness' according to my fav. philosophers is 'freedom'. This was easy for guys like Seneca and Leibniz who were born very wealthy. Dancing allows me the freedom from unnecessary constraints on my time (I can support school working a lot fewer hours, and still have lots $$ to put away in savings). Freedom is in many ways psychological, but 'money' or the lack of it can contribute. Obviously this job is not the utlimate answer, and certainly not for everyone. In the context of my situation, it works very well.

You are welcome my dear, I am glad that it is bringing on a good discussion

It is tricky for me ... when I was working full swing I just couldn't get on the mat in the mornings to do my (yoga) practice. I felt dirty, ashamed and didn't want to face what might come up. I had a lot of inner conflict that I was trying to deal with. I was finding the contrast between my 'day life' and 'night persona' so drastic that I felt as if I was losing myself. This is one of the main reasons dancing has been so on and off for me and why I stopped a few months ago.

I think for me it was an acceptance thing. Accepting what I do and myself for doing it. Loving myself through it all and being grounded. Knowing that there is no difference between swinging round a pole of training people at the gym.

I am finding it hard to make ends meet teaching and the thought of getting work in a shop/retail does not appeal to me in the least. Working the whole weekend vs working a couple of hours on a Friday night ...... I wonder if I will be able to stay centred and aware of these things if I was to get back on stage, or if I would lose myself once more.

    hhhhhhhhmmm

For me, and my personal belief system, dancing assists in spirituality. I express grace, beauty, motion, art, sensuality, and the female being while I'm at work. I also work with seduction, financial gain, and lust, but hey... who's counting?

I've known some dancers who considered what they did "healing" in a way--you know, sometimes we are the only physical or social contact some of these guys get. Sometimes we're their only release. If you want to look at it that way, go right on ahead . . . sometimes I feel like that, often not.

I will say this: I think that having a spiritual life is proabably really beneficial for dancers. Just staying in touch with how you feel, working through that, and taking care of yourself emotionally. It's hard and stuff comes up, but we all need to do it.

To quote Dr. Dre, "I only fear God and the IRS"!!!!

It helps sometimes if you get pushed into dancing by circumstances (in my case a car wreck, family & $$$ problems) so you don't over-think about the job. But the sex industry is the oldest business on earth. I am not ashamed of myself.
I hate that the stripping industry attracts so many evil people (management, some custies.) I think it's a testing ground for many.

Thank you thank you thank you for this thread.

I needed it more than everyone knows! I am pagan (wiccan, basically) very spriritual, I am a psychic reader (I hear voices, see spirits, read the tarot!) I talk to Goddess and God ALOT.

I have always been drawn to dancing, and now that it is becoming a reality, I've been concerned for my spirit, and confused where this very physical drive fits into a spiritual life.

I am going to print out some of these posts, and keep it with me when I work.

    Ramona.

Oh Ramona! I am glad this thread has helped a similar soul.

Its a windy road at times, 'white lighting' yourself and showering/cleansing with water after work are essential to keep spirit in tacked!

Would love to hear how you go with it all.

This is funny. You know, I don't fear God...in my spiritual beliefs, there is nothing that I can do that would cause me to suffer in the "afterlife". I don't believe in hell...and I don't believe in Judgement Day. I believe that we all go to the same place, as earth and "physical life" is for experience and not about getting into "God's good graces".

Having said that...the only person that I fear, is the part of me which I do not know well, yet. Dancing has given me more perspective into my own heart/soul...and some of that was kinda painful...and some of it was very freeing. All of it was a worthy experience. Although, being just a full-time mommy is the best job I have...I will not regret my dancing.

Venus, I spoke for myself, no one else. I happen to believe in God. I do not force my beliefs on anyone else nor do I ridicule their beliefs. I live by what I wrote above. I do not ask anyone else to do the same.

Oh, I wasn't insulting anything that you said. I just had to chuckle to myself reading that. I'm totally cool with whatever anyone chooses to think/believe. It's all good. I was only saying, "This is funny" because it made me laugh...while others "fear God", the person I fear the most is myself. Amazing how we're "all the same and yet completely different".

I was in no way putting down, chastising, insulting, or in any way being disrespectful towards your views/beliefs. I apologize if my statement came across that way.

As a stripper, it really helps to be a spiritual nihilist/fatalist, as I am.

True dat. It makes a poignant statement about the nature of our industry though, and why there are so many criminals and hustlers in it.

Well, I've always been a spiritual person. Extremely..I feel like we deal with Heaven and Hell here on Earth. Everyday we choose what type of person were going to be.

Anyway, Krys I've gone through the same thing you're going through as far as feeling bad about my job. I'm Muslim and when the children were little they went to Muslim school.
Every morning I would have to cover myself from head to toe to walk them into school.
They were very strict. So I would also have to do the same thing when I picked them up.
I would feel so ashamed of myself and even more so when it was time to pray.

Finally, I just decided that God knew what was inside of my heart and thats all that really matters. This is my job and I enjoy doing it. Not to mention I feel so light and free on stage, like my soul has been lifted. Freedom is true spirituality to me.

If going to work 1 or 2 days out of the week allows you the type of lifestyle you want, than do it. We are only given one life and its up to you to live it to the fullest.

This whole discussion is great all the points listed by posters is also a great way to keep balance and stability in your life. Sometimes throughout the hustling, music, drama, good and bad nights we all get lost for a minute. Its great to be able and to focus on staying you and truly knowing who you are besides your fictitious character you are nightly.
