Default Wires are off.. ohmigawd.. how bizaare!

Welp, I went in today to get my three week check up and everything was going so well, they said, "we can take the wire off and put a different type of appliance in your mouth that will function just as if they were wired, it will help you be able to eat a bit more just don't open your mouth too far and don't try to eat anything with a big utensil.. (baby spoons and forks) and don't attempt to chew anything yet.. (hmm... I've lost 11 pounds due to this.. down to a whopping 106 and they are telling me NOT to eat anything too complicated?? All I fucking want is a big salad with some tuna.. is that TOO Much to ask?? )

But, they are off!! AND OHMIGAWD how much better I feel.. no more headache! The first thing I did was brush my teeth that I haven't been able to brush (back ones with a itsy bitsy toothbrush!).. well.. some what.. LOL...

Two more weeks and I should be back to normal.. well, normal by my standpoints.. still sick and twisted to the rest of the world.. Just wanted to post an update..

    XO
    Gyn

So let me get this straight...you had your mouth wired shut to lose weight? Sorry if I missed the OP, but I just wanted to ask for all that were wondering but didn't want to ask...

She had some jaw problems (TMJ) and they needed to break the jaw and reset it...which is why her jaw got wired shut.

Glad to hear all is going so well, Gygner!!

Just wondering, how did they rebreak your jaw? I wouldnt think the doctor would take matters into his own hands, do they have a machine or just some tools to do that with?

They strapped her to a chair and just punched as hard as they could...if she wouldn't have had insurance, it would have been much worse.

But, Gynger...how did they actually re-set your jaw?

The surgery sounds horrific, I know, but what they do, is they cut the jaw bone and permanently reposition it with a metal plate and screws. There is no incisions on the outside of the mouth, everything is done inside the mouth. In normal circumstances, the jaw would not need to be wired, instead, there is a "key" that is used to expand the jaw, in my case, my jaw needs to move close to four centimeters total. Its a slow process, two centimeters can take up to six weeks to achieve. In my case, the other side of my jaw was also being affected, so they had to wire it for a short period of time to keep the other side from shifting..

Yes, it hurt. I truly wanted to die the first week and the meds they gave me didn't even touch the surface of the pain I was in.. I have a high tolerance, but this was literally too much to handle.

But, on the good news of this, it has turned out beautifully and I cant' wait to see the final results and see if my symptoms do not return. Already I can breathe much better, and I am sleeping better, we'll see if my headaches don't return after I am through with all of this.

wow. I am glad to hear it turned out well and that you are feeling and looking better. I had an expander thing when I was a lot younger, Im assuming they could do that again to me, but that was the whole reason I needed braces and I don't know if I can do all that again, but it would definitely be better than the surgery. Did your jaw used to pop a lot? Mine does it every time i open my mouth and now its on both sides, I wear a bite plate but its not doing much. Are you supposed to do anything to maintain your jaw how it is, or should t his totally fix it?
sorry for all of the questions, but I want to know what it's like. Good luck with eating the salad!

My jaw used to pop in and out all the time.. very painfully too.. it would also lock at times.. this is suppose to fix everything, and when your jaw is popping in and out and locking, get yourself checked for TMJ.. mine was very mild.. but it was enough to cause shifting and other problems.... two more years and I would have been in a completely different situation.

My jaw just did light popping...when I yawned...but my bite has shifted. I finally went and got my wisdom teeth out. What a difference!! My bite is still slightly off (I get Invisalign next month) but my jaw doesn't pop like it did and I've not had any headaches since my oral surgery. YEAH!! It's so nice...I'm not as "grouchy" either...much more patient because there's no headache.
