    Default Was what I said racist?

    I feel so horrible, I think I said something that totally came out racist.

    This one black girl was complaining how she made no money so I asked her if I could make a suggestion.

    I told her that since her skin is dark and she wears black clothes and it's a nightclub, she tends to kinda fade in the background.

    All of a sudden everyone was mad at me. I spent the whole night apologizing to everybody and I feel so guilty that I've been throwing up. ;-;

    I didn't mean for it to sound mean or anything. ;-;

    Was it bad?

    I think people are being overly sensitive about it. Yea, the 'fading into the background' wording is unfortunate, but that's only offensive if someone makes it.

    Yeah I agree that people are over reacting, especially the other girls should know you well enough to know that you didn't mean it malisciously. Talk to the girl and apologize for sounding offensive and let her know that wasn't your intention. If they don't accept that fuck them they are stupid bitches.

    I already apologized to her and she totally took it nicely but all the other girls were still mad at me and I heard them talking in the dressing room about me. I even apologized to them! One girl told me she was horribly offended because she had half black kids so I told her I was sorry and I didn't mean it and later I overhear her calling me so many names. But of course this girl for some reason has always not liked me.

    No, you were right. I've missed black women in the dark at several clubs, especially if they were wearing black. The lighting is not great and a lot of clubs have black or dark drapery over the walls, and all that darkness tends to blend in until you have no idea the dancer is there. I agree with you in that she would probably see a lot more money if she wore something lighter and made sure to hang out where the lights are (as opposed to near the walls, where it tends to be darker).

    Black women tend to look STUNNING in white, and it would stand out in your club's blacklights if you have them. Red is also a good color choice. She should stay away from black.

    Yek, she does do that! I tend to overlook her a lot because she is VERY dark black and wears black clothes and leans against the black drapes we have. Can never see her. And she only gets like 2-5 dances a night while the average is 10-15. She's worn white once or twice and it looks so nice on her.

    Your intentions were 100% benign, and intended to help this girl earn more money, by pointing out the fact that she needs to increase her 'visibility' in the club. Any person/dancer who took your 'helpful' suggestion as a racist comment has a real 'chip on their shoulder'.

    Maybe to the other girls you tone of voice and choice of words seemed odd to them. Im brown and I like to wear brighter colored outfits to compliment my skin. Alot of darkly colored girls should wear something so that they can be seen better. I dont think what you said was wrong but to them it might have just sounded wrong --and yes they are over re-acting over something so small.

    In my women's studies class I school I took, we had a guest lecturer one day give a speech about women and film...The topic of black actors came up and I've never forgotten it (she was using the anecdote as an example of 'systemic discrimination'- something that happens because the system has set it up that way, not any one person intentionally). Anyway, it's relevant because she was talking about how the film industry originally was very white-actor oriented (hollywood in the fifties when colour lighting was first coming out...). So when lighting technology was being developed, the techs were learning how to flatter pale skin. The problem is, although culturally we have made progress against discrimination and therefore there are more (although still criminally few and often unrepresentative) roles for black actors, the lighting technology taught in college has yet to catch up. What this means is (and she showed us clips) often black actors sharing scenes with white actors don't get the attention their performance may warrant because the lighting is hardly showing their faces, and certainly not flattering them as well. Even though techs can light a black actor very nicely, it still does not happen all the time, which means less notoriety for their acting skills, which means less attention, less awards, less work...

    It's just a theory, but watch some nineties films and check it out. It's unfortunate, but true. I actually think the same principle can be applied to the black lighting at clubs. Why do white and bright neon colours pop as much? Ideally performers with different skin tones could have overtones of red or pink lighting...I don't really know the details. This just occurred to me as something that resonated with what you said.

    Eh, its usually best just to not say anything to anyone. Those bitches are always looking for an excuse to gang up on a successful earner. And I'm talking about any other dancer potentially. Being nice tends to kind of be a drawback.

    In general, unless you are wearing PVC, black isn't the best color for the clubs. Plus, waitresses wear all black at so many places I've worked, you don't want the customers to be any more confused than their horny asses are already LOL!

    Stop apologizing to them. You've said in another thread your a top earner... I'm sure it's just fuel for drama. Next time you hear them talking shit, tell them you apologized to the girl you said it to and she knows you were just trying to help. I'd be insulted that they're infering you're a racist because of it. I've heard black girls say that to each other! Ask them exactly why they think it's racist. They won't have a reason and they'll drop it for the embarrasment of stuttering an excuse.

    Ugh, this really pisses me off. How many WHITE girls would've been offended with, "you're white, you should wear black, it'll help you stand out." Mention THAT to the white chicks... who obviously need to learn the definitions of racism.

    Oh god was it the white girls with the black babies that were offended? A lot of those girls tend to definately have a chip on their shoulder (at least from my experience) I think they are bitter because they are not black so they are trying to over compensate. "OH MY GAWD YOU BE DISRESPECTING MY SISTA LIKE THAT, IMA TELL MA BABY DADDY!" Shut the fuck up already. I'm not racist against black people, in fact I love the black girls that I work with. They are all really cool. I don't like white girls who try to pretend they are black. Get over it already!

    I'm half black, I don't talk like that and I certainly dont' behave in that manner. What you are talking about is acting GHETTO and people in the ghetto are ALL colors, Foxey.

    You said nothing wrong. People who take offense to a state of their body has some issues. I mean if you are overweight, you're overweight. If your skin is dark its dark. Unless you're micheal jackson, you stay the same color with various shades depending on how much/little sun you get.

    Acting "black", being black, and being racist are all different things. I learned that awhile ago in a thread I made in the lounge -what a wake up call that was.

    I have to agree - there is no acting black there is only acting ignorant. The two cannot and should not be confused. Black people have taken on that stigma but there are many other races that act the same ingnorant way. So, in defense its not just black people.

    You are SO cute. MUAH! You'll be fine.

    Racism pisses me off. Having a black father and being my mother's shade, I dealt with it often. The people that are racist are ALWAYS ignorant, no matter what their education.

    Okay, just out of curiosity, who says that? Nobody has EVER told me that "white girls should wear black because it stands out." Nobody has ever told me that "white girls should wear anything." This has to do with cultural standard. I've worked with many black girls, and I've got to say I can see them perfectly fine - even when they are wearing black. Especially when they are sitting directly across from me, which is usually the position a girl is in when she sells a dance. LM - I appreciate you meant it benignly, and I think you did right by apologizing, and it sounds like the other girl accepted it perfectly fine. End of problem - as for the white girls, it is a common phenomena. Hettie Jones (the white, Jewish wife of Leroi Jones) said that she felt like people didn't really see/understand her when she wasn't with her family, and that she felt "unraced" because she had black children.

    Well, no one says that because white is easier to see in the dark... so there's no need. What do you mean, "as for white girls, it is a common phenomena"? What's "unraced", there isn't one single agreed upon definition of race, there are only ethnicities... So, the color of your skin is the color of your skin, like Gabe said.
