I don't think you have anything to apologize for quite honestly. If you have made it right with the girl who you said it to, and even so, I don't think what you said was racist whatsoever.. you merely provided a suggestion, I wouldn't worry about it.

In regards to the other girls, drop it, and let them stew. It's obviously their problem now because they've made it theirs.

As long as you explained your suggestion to the other girl, its between you and her.

Why will racism never go away?

Because not everyone wants it to. Think about it for awhile, its true.

i don't think it was bad - sort of like advising a redhead not to wear pink lipstick ,etc. different skin tones look better in different colors, that's no secret.

I sooo agree ! I'm often envious of it too because even if am just a little paler than usual I get all washed out in white and I like to wear white both in and out of the club. I have this thing for crisp white cotton dresses, sheets, mens shirts - the list goes on.

As for the original topic, I think the better way to have made the suggestion of costume color would have been to say how lovely she would have looked in brighter colors.

I can't believe you even worried about it. SHE be a racist her own bad self! I could go into a huge rant here, but, I don't want to get banned. Lilith, you did nothing wrong! BTW, racism would go away if these type of events wouldn't happen. SHES the one that made it racist!

EXACTLY! No, lil, it wasn't racist. Okay, I took a psychology of prejudice and discrimination class just this summer. There are all different types of racism, but racism is a prejudiced ATTITUDE... not accidentally offending someone (which I dont' really think you did, here) because you were trying to help. I think these girls were more offended that you were giving advice... made them feel lame. Racism will probably NEVER go away because people will always have the stereotypes that seperate people in the first place... It's innate, we'd go crazy if we had to think about each person we came across in a day... so we categorize them instead.

You're so adorable, I can't believe those bitches. Just ignore them, they won't last long.

OMG THIS COMMENT MADE ME FEEL A MILLION TIMES BETTER! :3 I didn't associate it with redhead/pink lipstick.

It's like that time I decided I'd look good with pink hair. It DOES NOT WORK. :3

Sorry about the situation Morrigan-chan. Racism is either overdone or underdone. If you are accused of making slurs against black people, you're ostracized and branded. It disgusts me when some of the same people who get ultra touchy about "black" vs "African American" will say the word "Jap," "Chink," or "Wetback" without a second thought. It happened at my old club. I was asking a black girl about how she takes care of her skin, as dark-skinned people tend to hyperpigment from scars. Some other girl overheard and started bitching about me being racist, calling me Jap trash, Saigon Whore, etc, and nobody batted an eye, even though all racial slurs are equally hateful.

About girls with half-black children sometimes having a chip on their shoulder: I think that it's the result of being stigmatized by society, which causes them to develop defense mechanisms and lash out at anything that sounds remotely threatening to them.

I'm sorry that it was your turn to be the scapegoat. Decent girls like us don't have to look very far to see that life could suck a whole lot worse, but some people have to dig to find that kind of Schadenfreude, and relish the feeling of being above someone for a change.

First of all, Infra-Red, the girl that she said it to is NOT the one that made a big deal of it. It was the OTHER people in the club.

SHE be a racist her own bad self!
You must have grown up in a bad school system. That English was horrible.

    KrazyJane, Nihonjin desu ka?

I remember when I was 9 saying Jap to a girl and I still feel guilty about it. I didn't know what it meant in the day I just heard it was slightly insulting.. not that it had so much history behind it like the word nigger. Both words are horrible and have so much history and death behind them. World wars where the Japanese were murdered for their slanted eyes. American wars where the blacks were murdered for their dark skin.

It's sad that racism exists. Everybody is different. Everybody is unique and, I believe, everyone is beautiful in their own right.

But people should also appreciate what makes us different. Yes the Asians have almond eyes, but that's what makes them special. The African American's have dark skin, but it can be beautiful. We shouldn't be afraid to admit our differences in our races. Because those differences are wonderful. Shouldn't be ashamed.

One of the black girls where I work was telling me just the other day that she prefers to wear light clothing for the same reason. I don't think that was offensive at all. She -has- dark skin, so what? Girls tell me that yellow and other pale colors don't look good on me and that my red lipstick -does- look good because I'm fair skinned and irish, is that racist? Hell no. It's no different than telling someone their hair looks better a certain way than others. *shrug* people take things way too seriously sometimes.

Nothing racist about this at all.

In fact, I've personally adviced dancers who had dark skin/dark hair to wear lighter colored outfits that contrast well with their skin tone/hair. Fair skinned pasty white blondes should wear darkerer colors for the same reason. Visibility is key to attracting people.

I wish clubs would make it more pertient to dancers that the choices they make in how they present themselves, from the color of the outfits they wear to the style of music they choose to dance to can have a serious impact on their earnings. There's a little more science to it than some people think. Go look at the logo sign of most chain restauraunts. Red, orange, and yellow are very prominent colors in these signs (McDonalds is a perfect example). Does anyone think that's just coincidental?

    Hai, 1/2 Nihonjin desu, Morrigan-chan.

True, racism shouldn't exist. At the same time, people shouldn't be so anal about it that it creates a whole new stigma.

Thats such crap. Seriously. It isnt racist to offer color coordination help! Gods... I'm only part black but even I know that some shades and colors and such just dont work on some skin tones. Doesnt matter what skin tone either! Like, I dont wear pink or orange, or most yellows... I'm yellow skinned, and they make me look ill.

Egads! Dont sweat it. If they cant have the common sense to see the difference between being helpful and being racist.... fuck em.

No, that's not racist. It's just a simple fact that dark-skinned girls who wear dark clothing tend to get lost in a dark club. Doesn't matter what ethnicity they are - dark skin needs lighter clothing to stand out. Also, darker-skinned girls NEED brighter lights on stage in order to be seen. I'm thinking of 2 black girls I work with. One likes to wear black and use dark lights on stage - the other likes to wear lighter colors and use brighter lights on stage. Guess who gets more attention?

Quit beating yourself up girl, and ignore those dumbasses you work with. They are obviously waaaaay oversensitive with the race thing (OMG don't say anything about color or darkness to the black person ugh!). Some people just need to grow up, chill out, get with the program!

Question: was the black girl offended or just the others?

A wetback is a Mexican immigrant. Came from the fact that many of them swam the Rio Grande and entered the US with 'wet backs'.

Also because they wear no shirts when they work outside, and their backs get very sweaty.
