Default 'On your knee's, please"My kid is pissed off!School uniforms

    heheheheheheheheheheh

Ok my kid is in a really great private school that we researched for 3 years till we found it.
We started looking before she got into middle school for something that would act as a pre collage prep time rather then the public school"social"bullshit that runs rampant.
She did great the first two years, now she is a JR.

They changed the dress code this year. Its still school uniforms, but now they set limits.

each day the girls who wear the skirts and not the pants have to get down on thier knees and the teachers measure from the ground up to the bottom of the skirt,it cant be more then 3 inches from skirt to ground.
also the top button on a button up shirt is the only one that can be undone, absolutely No cleavage can show, and no undergarments can be visable.
Break any of the rules and the kid gets detention.

    ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!

Its almost like I made the rule up!!!!!!!!

The girls are pissed, the daddy's are happy(least this one is)and the school wont relax the rule regardless of how many petitions the students turn in.

What do you think about school uniforms???

Im ok with school uniforms,I think ALL public schools and private schools should regulate what the kids wear and set guidlines for the kids who dont follow the rules.
Yes im biased because its my little girl, but then i look back on my days in school, and then I look at what the kids wear to the public schools today, and then im just convinced that i would support this rule for other peoples kids.

I think school uniforms are a good idea if they encourage academic achievement. In other words, you excel at some academic activity (i.e., get an A in math) and for the next semester, you can wear something the other kids cannot or can wear something on your uniform a special way. Teenagers' desire to be a bit different from each other then helps some strive to improve their academics. Most public high schools already do this but for athletics (i.e., the letter jacket).

As for trying to control their hormones of teenages via school uniform, that's ridiculous. A fantasy of over-protective daddies and that's all. The only thing that will result is the development of sexual fetishes. See "schoolgirls" in UK and "loose socks" in Japan. That and once school is out, the kids will go overboard in their casual dress. Too bad these schools haven't a clue about basic adolescent psychology.

Not that I oppose a consistent uniform. That works for the pro-academic reason I mention in the first paragraph. But if the reason is to control sex drives, it is only laughable.

I also went to a private school and we had pretty much the same rules, we had to get on our knees and they'd measure the skirts. We had to wear knee high socks. Black shoes. Everytime someone left or just arrived it was kiss on the cheek one by one. Legs crossed at all times while sitting. There was a 6" inch rule for everyone. No sharing anything, combs, nail files, etc., Nails had to be pretty at all time, Only one piercing allowed on each ear. We were taught to always walk on the right hand side. No chewing gum or any other hard candy. We had to wear this ridiculous outfit for p.e. the guys and girls wore red shirts and blue shorts :-(. There's more but thats all i can remember right now.

i have to say i agree with the school. I don' think it will control the kids sexual thoughts about each other but the shool girl out fit with the skrit and opend blouse has a widley known and alomost universal sexaul appeal. With this in mind at a real school with real teenages i think there are rules are best. This keeps the foucus on there school work and not who can make there outfit the sexiest. I also think in some way this protects the kids from sexual predetors that may lurk in the area where the school is becuse they find this appeling. I am not saying that its full proof protection from sexual preditors but anything helps. true the rules aren't much fun fort he kids and if i was a teen in the school i would be upset about it but it makes sense.

I'm all for it the uniforms, and I like the rule about the skirt. It's all very clear....it cannot be disputed...and it can all be checked before they get to school. No excuses. If A then B. Any questions?

My upstairs neighbor just started sending her daughter to a public high school. She's in 10th grade, and has been in private school up until this year. They have a set dress code/uniform because of kids getting shot (or stabbed) over their clothes. They have to wear dressy white shirts (collared), and either black or dark blue pants (no jeans). She doesn't mind it much of course, because she's been in private school where there was an actual uniform. It's pretty sad that it must be done, but I'm ALL for it.

I'm homeschooling Delia when she hits the age, unless we're in AZ. I know the schools there and I trust them.

I went to private school, and some teachers did that... in fact, until the dean retired, she would take a seam ripper and rip the seam, even if the skirt was rolled up... to be honest, i dont think those rules are very bad... why should highschoolers be allowed to show cleavage or wear butt-bearing skirts to school?

You're happy your daughter will be forced to get down on her knees if she wants to wear a UNIFORM skirt??? You don't think that's just a TAD humiliating and excessively harsh???? There is NO WAY in hell I'd pay for my daughter to attend a school where she had to get on her knees and be measured for wearing a SKIRT!

I have no problem with dress codes or uniforms but making the girls get down on their knees for measuring is too damn much! The school can simply regulate how long the skirts need to be from manufacturer and make sure the girls are wearing them properly, not rolling them up or whatever.

If skirts are that much of an issue, don't allow skirts as part of the uniform. Let them wear shorts or skorts of a certain length (give measurements to manufacturer/distributor selling the uniforms).

I tend to think these uniform regulations open the door for overzealous administrators to get a bit too nazi-like with their enforcement. Gotta watch that just as much as you watch what the kids are wearing.

^ I agree with Bridgette. The most important thing in all of this is that some parents are just too fucking permissive with what they're kids wear. I just saw some 14 year old girl in the store wearing jeans that barely came over her pubic bone with a low-rise g-string, a tube top and make-up galore. She looked more like she was 18 years old...or older. I couldn't believe that her parents let her out of the house like that.

My daughter will have a choice of what to wear...but stuff like what I described above will just not be part of that choice. End of discussion there.

I think the daily kneeling thing is way off, you can measure the same thing while standing... it just sounds rather creepy to me.

i wore a uniform when I was in boarding school. Hated it with a passion. I think that it really stunts the child's emotional growth and self expression, especially during the times when they are finding themselves. It's really not hard to monitor what your kids wear to school and out and about...

If I -had- to make my kids to go a school that required uniforms, I think I'd find one like the public schools in California where I lived. It wasnt so much the actual items of clothing, it was the color. They could wear regular clothing, as long as it didnt have logos and/or patterns, and were the specific colors of the school. The one near my old apartment was burgundy tops with khaki bottoms. Could be anything from tank tops to tee shirts to sweatshirts, etc... and pants, skirts of all kinds. Obviously there was a rule against skimpiness, but that can be done at home too.

I dont look down on folks who send their kids to schools with strict uniform codes, I just would never do it. I remember how miserable I was.

    Hold the presses!!!

This is a height discrimination issue! A short girl would get away with showing more with this 3" rule than a tall girl.

Or it is a sexual exploitation issue!! A short girl would show more than a tall girl.

Call the lawyers! I smell a big class action lawsuit!!!!!

When I was in school I was very rebelious, mostly in the way I dressed. I told my parents that if they ever sent me to a school that required uniforms I would pierce my nose. I can see why parents like them but I have always felt that the way we dress is a form of self expression and even kids need to experiment with that. I went through all kinds of phases of dress growing up and while I often got picked on while I was at a really snooty private school for dressing like a freak (the kids called me "Madonna") I got to learn early on in life a lot of valuable lessons about what people are really like and how shallow some people can be.

There was an alternative school here that posed a question to the students about school uniforms. It presented to them what it saw as the problems with the students clothes (which had more to do with elitism, and less to do with profanity or revealing clothing) and asked them to find their own solution (if any) and actually pledged to stand by what solution they came up with. Being an alternative school, the students weren't very interested in uniforms, both because they encourage/demand social conformity and because of expense (each student would need at least two). After some debate they agreed to a dress code that banned visible labels. Students wound up sewing or appliquing over the visible labels on their shirts and jeans. Everyone was very happy with that solution.
It has never been shown that uniforms make kids smarter or more studious. It has been shown to improve social conformity and to make them more pliable to authority. (If you want them to be smarter, read with them when they are little. Nothing to do with clothes). I don't have kids, but I don't know if that is something I think is a particularly valuable lesson for them. There is also a very limited connection between dressing slutty and being slutty, VG - I agree that girls who dress that way may look kind of regrettable, but I also think they will outgrow it on their own and it is actually not an indicator of their behaviour. It has never been shown to be "distracting" in classrooms - boys (or girls) are not failing tests because they are looking at Suzy's thighs. In Toronto you had various city officials some years ago talking about how we needed to implement uniforms to prevent crime - the whole kids getting stabbed for their shoes thing. Surprise, surprise, when a journalist actually looked into it - would you believe that they has not been an incident in a Toronto school for 17 years (probably 21 by now) in which a kid was stabbed/attacked/hurt to take his or her clothing?
Making girls get down on their knees to measure their skirts is clearly humiliating - and it is a process clearly there to exert authority and dominance, not for any practical reason. On the other hand though - they can choose to wear pants. So if they really disliked this process, they could petition their parents to change schools (which I think would be more effective than handing in student petitions, which are notoriously useless, unless you are in a school. that is already dedicated to giving the students a voice. In which case they probably wouldn't have such a rule in the first place) or wear the pants instead of suffering that ridiculous and embarrassing ritual every morning. I wonder that more of them don't do that.

I never said that dressing slutty meant being slutty. However, in a world where SEX is everywhere; where they are making g-strings for little girls. How can you say that children are not "being affected" by the extremely revealing clothing? We are sexualizing our children at younger and younger ages. I don't see anything wrong with not allowing that. I don't necessarily agree with uniforms, and making the girls get down on their knees is only putting them into accepting complete submissiveness...but telling your children that they can or cannot wear something is fine. I encourage now and will always encourage my daughter to be creative. I will encourage her to find things in which she can express her creative self...I will not allow her to express her "creative self" by wearing clothing that is completely revealing and inappropriate for a young girl (mind you, this is YEARS off...heh). If she wants to dress "slutty" she can do it when she turns of legal age to make her own decisions. Until that time, she will not wear those types of clothes. It's a matter of saying, "You are not ready for this." Too many parents allow their children to grow up too fast...hell, a lot of parents don't even raise their kids...they let the TV and movies and video games do it for them.

To each his/her own. But, putting your foot down on acting/dressing inappropriately never hurt any kids.

Unless that kid was me. I carried "spares" in my purse and changed once I was out of the house.

If I had a daughter (thank God I don't) I would be siding w/ big green.

I'm not against uniforms, but for cryin' out loud, let the kids be kids and give them a casual uniform to wear rather than the snooty dressed up kind that you see in private prep schools. They'll have plenty of time as adults to wear neckties and skirts.

A simple collared polo shirt emblazoned with the school logo and a pair of trousers will suffice. I remember seeing a report on the news where the "uniform" at an elementary school was matching Hawailan shirts. This sort of thing would not be more comfy for the kids, but a considerably smaller burden on Mom and Dad's pocketbook.

CT and RI are Catholic states with lots of parochial schools. Their enforced conformity is good for creating submissives. I had a dancer ask me to please wear a light blue button-down oxford cloth shirt, because that's what senior boys wore in her HS. When she unbuttoned it, her hands were shaking. Anything for a better rush.

I went to a public HS with a basic dress code, like you have to wear a bra. As a hall monitor, I would call out girls with nipple bumps pushing against their tops. I knew all the slut wannabees. My GF found a source for seamless fishnet bras in a nearby city, and we sold a lot of them for minimal compliance.
