Default Denver Suburb Opposes Opening Of Spermint Rhino

    From the Denver Post:

    Rights battle pits strippers, community

How could the residents of Centennial do this to strippers?

Don't they know that most adult entertainers are only working their way through law school?

Lawyer or stripper? Occasionally, it's difficult to discern which profession is the shadier...

Citizen activists (and who isn't one these days?) say they are intent on protecting their community, no matter how "classy" the entertainment, and despite the constitutional legality of stripping.

And they have every right to persuade their legislators to regulate strip joints out of business... [Really? as far as I can determine, the constitution still applies to Colorado]

...Schwartz believes the controversy is a "tempest in a teapot," and I may agree.

But, then again, I don't live in Centennial. My children don't attend the nearby day care or eat at the local restaurants.

Is this a question of freedom? Perhaps. But also a question of community.
Yeah, we all know that's how clubs attract customers. Like they are going to be passing out flyers at the local Chili's and Kinder Care. Please.

I dont live there and dont really know the layout or the surroundings, but i gotta say,im with the people who dont want it,even if it is the rhino or some other high end club.

    sub·urb ( P ) (sbūrb)
    n.
    1. A usually residential area or community outlying a city.
    2. suburbs The usually residential region around a major city; the environs.

Put it in the CITY,keep it out of the "burbs"IMO.

No contest Destiny... lawyers win hands down.

I agree with Big Green MnM on this one.

You will actually find that although the press tends to concentrate on the puritan argument, it is usually a far more mundane and pragmatic problem which prevents SC's from operating in surburbia.

In general, most municipal councils which have land zoned as high density residential or residential have 'adult venues' at best as permitted activities and not an "as of right". In some councils/precincts these are prohibited activities because it conflicts with the primary function of the land use zone.

A SC usually requires to be open to about 3 -5 AM in the morning and this usually creates a noise nuisance from traffic generation and patrons entering and leaving the club.... this is what usually kills it in terms of a planning permit in surburbia. Of course, when something like this is advertised it generates a lot of submissions from citizen activists but it is usually killed on traffic noise nuisance, parking problems and incompatible land use as per the zoning. Again by this, I dont mean in terms of puritan values...however, this is not a newsworthy story and has no political mileage.....

When I was out there in June, I went to a club called PT's Sports in nearby Sheridan. It was in an semi-industrial area near nobody's homes (where I think that SOB's should be), but a couple of the gals working there told me that despite that the city has been trying to shut it down for years.

    From the article:
In Centennial, the City Council was convinced by citizens to increase zoning restrictions: a 10 p.m. closing time, no tips in G-strings, no lap dances, no contact between customers and "performers," and a 1,000-foot cushion between like-minded businesses.

There are already clubs in metro Denver that are under much better operating circumstances than that, so there's no way that they could survive. If they can afford to build from scratch, they might want to find a better location although zoing restrictions are making those places hard to find.

I think ya'll idea of a "suburb" may be a little too narrow. From the article I linked:

...despite its location in a heavily congested area framed by rows of strip malls, chain restaurants and megastores.

I've never been to Centennial CO, but I don't think we're talking about a place with nothing but tract houses in neighborhoods with streets that are all named after trees. It's clear from the article that this town has plenty of other commercial and industrial businesses. Therefore, consitutionally speaking, they have no right to ban a business just because they disapprove of what it sells. What if a majority of the City Council were vegans? Would you support their "right" to ban McDonalds?

I found one paragraph of the article that Doc linked very interesting:

Opponents of the Centennial ordinance have questioned the city's motivation in choosing a site for adult businesses so close to I-25. The windfall in sales tax that a club such as Spearmint Rhino could generate makes them wonder whether Centennial officials actually want the club there.

As far I can tell, that is the key. Every strip club owner in America should drive down to their state capitol and beg the politicians to enact a special tax on adult entertainment. Tax dollars are like crack to politicians. Once they've tasted it, they are hooked for life. Such a tax would ensure the continued operation of strip clubs for eternity.

    I agree with you 100%!!!!

The bad/good side, depending on how you look at it,if you Tax it,its all gotta be legal and above the table.
That would include all the dancers.

I live in the area, and there are VERY FEW residential areas where they're talking about putting this place. And frankly, I think the place would do quite well. There's a lot of car dealerships nearby, which is basically the kind of people SC's look for. (I used to sell cars, so don't bash me for saying that). There's clubs all over the metro area except for the southern area (save PT's All Stars or whatever they call it now and that's BARELY south).

No neighborhoods, no schools, no day care centers, why not???
