    Default There's always something...

So, I had the bright idea of remodeling my kitchen. We live in a condo, and I have to say that the old kitchen was just icky-nasty. Nasty ass old cabinets that have been repainted twice...and ugly laminate flooring. So, we go and get new cabinets and rip the old ones out. We somehow got a cabinet that is the wrong size. I checked and double checked my measurements. All fine there...remeasured all of the cabinets and the one corner cabinet is 10" too big. Look over the plans of the kitchen from the store's computer. How nice, the kitchen isn't big enough for this type of cabinet, so the computer figured it'd just make the kitchen bigger to fit it.

So, we take it back and after some hassles, got the right cabinets. Now, time to rip up the floor. BASTARDS. There are 3 layers of fucking vinyl tile under the old laminate flooring. Grrrrrrr...of course, they stop where the cabinets were. We rip the laminate out in the main hallway to find...yes, cemented old ass 70's brown ceramic tile. Lovely. Now, we just got done ripping up the 3 layers of vinyl...and I'm taking a break before I go get my goggles on and start chiseling away at the ceramic tile.

Not only that, but the walls are so fucking uneven, the cabinets aren't straight. So, off to the hardware store to buy some wood to even everything out.

*sigh* I'm exhausted...and I will never do this again.

Well, that's not true. I have to rip up the old carpet throughout the rest of the place and prep it for new flooring.

Off to the back-breaking labor of making this place look nice.

Hmmm... somehow Venus.. I keep picturing you in goggles.. I bet you are sexxxxxy!

But that aside.. hehehehe.. You are one brave woman... when I redid my flooring in my old house, I had originally planned to re do the rest of the place.. I gave up after the hard wood floors.. I understood why the bids I got from fixer uppers were so high...

Good luck! Post pictures when you're done.. I bet it will look great when its all finished..

Sorry to hear you're havin' such a rough time of it, dear. I painted my deck a couple weeks ago, & even tho it wasn't nearly as involved as what you're doin' it still was way more than I expected. I've heard of this type of thing before too. You never know what you're getting into, no matter how many preparations or precautions you take...

I'm to the point where I'd move before I'd do much more remodeling!

Of course, I had the last house pretty much completely remodeled before the ex decided it was time to move.

Then, she thought it was time to start over again.

But yeah, Venus as the sexy construction worker.

    C.T.M?? What is that?

Hmmm..maybe I'll post a pic of myself with the goggles on...holding a hammer...Should I put on my stripper heels?

Got 1/2 of the hallway ripped out...I should have taken pics of what it looked like before we started ripping the place out. LOL But, I'll take pics now (everything is ripped out) and then more when we're done.

As much as I'm bitching about it, I actually like it. heh It's hard work, but when we're done, it'll be that much better. Besides, isnt' there a saying: "If you want it done right, do it yourself?" I think I'm too picky to sit back and watch someone else doing something.

    VG,
I share your pain. I have been absent because for the past 2 months I have been remodeling our kitchen. We raised the ceiling from 8' to 9' and I had to redo all of the electrical. The cabinets look great and we should have the new wood floors installed in two weeks. Just waiting for the granite to be fabricated.

There is nothing sexier than a woman with goggles and a crowbar. I can hardly wait to see the pictures. OOh OOH, can you be coated with dry wall dust???

No, no, no! Those guys never go away and then they want to sit around your living room watching football and telling you not to ever have any more sex. I just managed to get rid of mine last year and I don't recommend anyone hiring one of those!

Wow...your kitchen looks so fabulous!! You did a great job!!

As for the drywall dust...I'm afraid not...we're not removing any walls here...unfortunately. Scorpio put his foot down there.

We're not doing the dark wood. I decided to use white cabinets as the kitchen has no windows and tends to be very dark. So, white cabinets with a light paint...and laminate flooring. I want to have a granite countertop...but I don't want to have to trade in Makayla to afford it (heh). I found this beautiful granite floor tile that was being clearanced out. I got enough for our entire countertop. So...after the cabinets are installed...and the counter is back in, I go to work scoring the old counter and placing granite tile onto the counter. I can't wait. I'm frustrated with having more work than I wanted, but it's kinda fun at the same time. A great way to take out frustration without ruining anything.

As for eating...we just grill out. Unless Makayla wants Macaroni and Cheese, then our neighbor graciously makes a batch for her.

My mom is great at coming up with ideas for something that will look awesome but she gets totally carried away. Not long ago she found a contracter to do her kitchen that she really liked. She started planning and planning and planning. After a bunch of drawing up plans and changing them and picking things out she finally asked him for an estimate so far as to what she'd need to spend. When he told her, "I don't know, but you're past the $100k mark already," she stopped and had to reconsider everything. Kitchens are expensive!!!!

aww...your neighbor sounds so nice! I don't think any of mine would make me some mac n cheese if i asked them. But then again, I think I have the worlds scariest neighbors.

I'm currently redoing my whole house, it's a nightmare. Anyways, in my kitchen there was this hideous white tileboard(the previous owner LOVED this stuff...it's all over the house.) and under that there was pink wallpaper, then a layer of the ugliest yellow wallpaper and under that....sea green paint.

i can't get it off. it's driving me nuts. k...done venting. I do think you should take some pictures!!

Ok...now, the first pic is of the kitchen. The cabinets are ripped out and flooring gone as well as the appliances. The wall used to be "HELLO Yellow"...really screaming bright. Over that was the nastiest of wallpapers. Not only was the wallpaper this old, nasty floral pattern, but the people we bought this place from smoked here for 17 years...so everything had this dingy, yellowish, burnt look to it. It was bad. The wallpaper was torn down and I had to paint the walls this color called "Misty Lilac" (I'm a purple freak hehe). The kitchen when it's done will have a beechwood colored laminate with the Misty Lilac color walls and bright white cabinets (we're getting new appliances next month).

Now, the second set of pictures are of the hallway with the ceramic tile flooring halfway removed. It's a pain in the ass...but it'll be good to get this crap out of here and put the flooring in the way it's supposed to be put in.

Ummm...I'll get my stripper shoes out and get a pic with the hammer and goggles a little later. I'm all sweaty and dirty right now and not feeling to sexy. But, I guess, what the hell, right? LOL

Someone get VG a hard hat so the outfit looks complete.

Ironic how this home improvement nightmare thread was brought up. Last week my sister went home to visit my parents on her vacation, and thought that while she was there she'd help my mom pull new wallpaper in her kitchen. After a couple of days, she felt a sharp pain in her foot and they had to take her to the hospital.

Apparently a piece of metal that had for whatever reason had been left in her foot from an operation years back protruded through her skin. So while on her vacation she had to have some emergency surgery yesterday.

    Good luck with the remodeling.

Keep thinking of the value you're adding to your home as you slave away in there. And how much nicer it will look when you're done. Anytime I've done ANY home improvement type stuff, when I'm done I like to just sit in the middle of the room for half an hour or so and admire my work. Just that seems to make it all worth it.

Don't forget to add the ridiculously short, frayed denim cutoffs when you're taking construction girl pics

May I introduce eveyone in this thread to "Welham's law", (named after a wise old Managing Director I used to work for).

"It will take twice as long and it will cost twice as much as your first estimate."

Unfortunately, only too true from my experience; be it a big business project, or putting in a kitchen.

Oh, and don't try chipping the tile out in sexy-construction-worker stripper atire. The first time I chipped out old tile, I wore shorts. I was a little suprised by the little red rivulets running down the legs. A few more scars won't hurt my legs, though.

It would be a shame, however, to damage yours.

    VG,
It really does add value. Just take your time and multiply it by $180/hour for what you are saving. .....
But, it is really satisfying to do a project like that and enjoy it.

I'm going to say something...but I'm really pissed off.

Don't ever buy cabinets from IKEA. Ever. I'm terrible at measuring and so I asked their "Kitchen Help" experts...who assured me that I would be able to fit my pantry and my corner cabinet with my dishwasher on one wall. Bastards. They don't fucking fit.

If I have to go over there one more time, I'm going to fucking rip them all a new asshole.

    Bastards.
