Default Urgent; Exotic dancers please help

Does anyone know of any site links we could go to that give information about the laws/rights for exotic dancers working in clubs and independently?
Or any links to lawyers, companies, support or anything that have information on aiding and giving information to exotic dancers on the East coast.

    Anything would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Every state has their own labor laws and their own history of court rulings regarding clubs and dancers ... which state are you talking about, and what is the specific nature of your request ?

Thanks I didn't know that. Specifically New Jersey and New York state. I need lawyers that work with strippers. or good entertainment lawyers, and an organisation that can give legal advice. I cant go into it fully right now but its a very urgent request.

First off laws are different from town to town and from state to state. My advice is to call around. Most lawyers give free first consultations..that way you can get a feel for what type of person they are and if they are really willing to help you.Just shop around.

Charleygirl, unfortunately you're not really giving us even a hint of the nature of your legal needs. If you're looking for a true "heavy hitter", Mark Alonso is far and away the most experienced defense attorney for strip clubs and dancers in the Metro NY area. He has represented over half of the Manhattan clubowners in various appeals against the City of New York. However, it's extremely unlikely that Mark is the type of attorney who does free consultations and/or pro-bono work for dancers - more likely he'll want a $5 grand retainer to let you in the door.

If you're specifically looking for legal advice about a particular issue, it matters a lot exactly what jurisdiction you're dealing with, it matters whether the law in question is civil (like employment contract) or criminal (like prostitution) or governmental/administrative (like labor/bennies/discrimination), etc. in order to steer you to the best person for the job at an affordable price.

As to 'free' legal advice from organizations, where exotic dancing is concerned the primary 'contributor' used to be the ACLU. However this particular organization has been curiously silent in the NY/NJ area for the past few years - I'm not exactly sure why.

If your just interested in local laws, the local Police department/City Hall is a good place to start. Depends upon your specific needs. Two good ones that I know of are Luke Lirot who works in the Florida area often and Jon Roger Diamond. Otherwise, just pick up your yellow pages until you are referred to a competent one... There are also free attorney referral services. Goodluck. You might read some of the postings on "Anti SC Laws" on this site also.

laplover, Mark Alonso is the 'Luke Lirot' of the metro NYC area. He's so deeply connected to NYC clubowners that I suspect he gets lifetime VIP room 'comps' !

If you're looking for an 'affordable' but competent entertainment law firm in the NY/NJ area, you might try . This group doesn't have the 'connections' or the appeals/superior/supreme court experience of a Mark Alonso, but they probably don't charge by the minute either.

If you're looking for a defense attorney in regard to a charge made against you, then you're far better off seeking out a very local attorney to the jurisdiction in which your case will be brought. In these sort of legal matters, the 'good ol boy' network of a particular attorney being a golfing buddy of a particular DA and a particular local judge means every bit as much as (and probably even more than) the attorney's knowledge of the law when it comes to striking deals on plea bargains, reduced fines, probation, sealed records etc.

Call your state bar.. they will give you a free referral.. you can also go to any law library and obtain a visitor's pass and do the research yourself, however, I don't recommend this unless you know what you are looking for specifically... you can also go to a local university library and do a search there. As Melonie pointed out, unless you have a specific reason, it will be tough.. and most attorney's nation wide on a criminal type of case require anywhere from 5k to a 20k retainer fee based on the charges filed against you, if you are inquiring about a criminal charge against you. Labor laws and things of that nature, will more than likely be less. In my area, retainers start at 500 bucks for a labor issue and go all the way up from there based on the claim.. hourly rates of attorneys depend on the attorney themself.

    Good luck.

The problem Im having recently is with the legal-eze and American-eze. Theres a lot of American words and legal terms used here that are very different to my English when I try to search, like a 'state bar' for instance Gynger!
Having these kind of problems is bad enough but it feels like im learning another language too!
Thanks for all your help all. Bless.
The search continues....(and the headache with it)

Most, if not all, state governments have websites that offer a searchable version of state statutes. See http://www.loc.gov/rr/news/stategov/stategov.html for links to each state.

Sometimes you can scan the table of contents of the statutes and determine what chapter/section is relevant, but it's not unusual for applicable sections to be scattered about. If you do a search like "strip club," "adult cabaret," "prostitution," "sexual contact" or some other relevant term that's likely to show up in the applicable section of the law, the results will usually point you to the chapters and sections of statutes that are relevant.

Some city and county government websites have a similar database of local laws or you may have to go to the library or city hall to view those. Actually, going to the local library's not a bad idea, because that's what those folks are there for, to help you navigate the resources available. (If anyone asks, you're researching for something you're writing like a term paper or story.)

At best, you'll have a better layman's understanding of some concepts by reading these documents. The law is usually complex and open to interpretation. If it was meant for you and I to be able to decipher it easily and completely, there wouldn't be all those jobs for judges and lawyers.
