Default is there a way to do acrylic nails without damage?

i'm sorry if i'm repeating a topic that's already been beaten to death, but i was wondering- is there a way to do acrylic nails without damage? will removing them and letting my real nails breathe, and putting vitamin e oil on them for a week or so every few months work? i think i want to go salon acrylic when i start dancing, as i've tried them before and i was pleased with how durable they were. but i don't want to ruin my real nails! if i do ruin my real ones, is it permanent? or will a healthy diet, enough water, etc. let a good nail eventually grow in to replace the devastated one?

I have worn them a long time.. I take them off three months out of the year (summer months due to gardening and other things)... your real nails will be soft, paperthin at first.. very fragile, but they will get stronger after a few weeks.. when you do get them removed, have them removed professionally, and they can also put a light acrylic over the type so that they aren't so thin or fragile.

I had them for awhile. They look good, but they felt unhealthy, and it bothered me after awhile. I just go with natural nails now and keep them long. My nails grow fast though, so it works out.

Nail damage can be permanent. It depends on how long you have the fakes on for. My nails used to not have the "ridges" in them...they do now.

After wearing fakes for about 3 months last year, it took about 3-6 months for my nails to grow back where they were healthier. I still have problems with splits occuring by the quick-line, though.

Just take good care of your nails and let them grow naturally if you are worried about damaging your real nails. Most salons, though, fuck up your nails worse when they pry the nail off. NEVER EVER let them do that. Make them file, soak, file until the nail is gone.

    Yes, CAREFULLY take them off!
I used to get mine done, and had them done for a good two years or so. I got tired of watching them get dirty under the nails, they did this all the time!
I took mine off and it took a while for them to grow back and be happy. I made sure that I used as many natural prducts onthem I could fine, things for the cuticles and vitamins for the nails. I made sure I used extra thick "healthy" clear nail polish so they wouldn't break as much. Now I get complimented on them, they aren't too long, break every once in while, but look so pretty that it was worth the wait! And I don't have to get them "fixed" all the time.
    good luck.

has anyone who used to have acrylics notice a difference in money between having acrylics and short, manicured, natural nails? I have always done the natural because acrylics are high maintenance and expensive, but I would do acrylics if it made a difference

The drill they use also causes thin ,brittle nails. A friend of mine that does nails will buff them and light file them and refuses to use a drill because she wants to protect the natural nail as much as possible.

I just want to rave about the type of nail that I get and love! I don't do regular acrylics or solar pink and whites. Instead I get a Gel nail. Most salons dont do them, you have to look hard. Its commonly done in Europe and just hasnt become as popular here b/c they are harder to do and a little bit more expensive. However, they are great! They are basically this clear gel that is laid on top of your nail, you can wear them without polish and they actually look very pretty and shiny. At the salon I go to, its $50 for a new set and then $25 for fills. I only get fills every 3- 3.5 weeks b/c my nails grow slower. Also, out of the almost year that I've had them now, I've only had ONE nail break on me! That's how durable they are. I get compliments all the time from my female friends on how nice they look, b/c they do look better than even pink and whites or acrylics. So, my advice to ya'll is, if you want the best looking, and most durable nails out there (oh, I completely forgot to mention, they won't tear up your nail bed as much either, they are much gentler, thats why I switched) then start calling your salons and asking if they do GEL nails!!!!
