    Default Dancers Impacted by Katrina

To all dancers (friends, colleagues, customers, etc.) impacted by Katrina - first of all I hope that you, your loved ones, and friends are safe. Although it will take time for rebuilding there are resources available and I wanted to provide information.

    1) With the declaration of a disaster area, genrally (I beleive this will happen any day now); you will be allowed to amend your prior year tax returns (2004) and report your Hurricane losses retrospectively allowing for a tax refund immediately instead of waiting until 2006.

2)FEMA; the Red Cross; the Salvation Army and similar groups all have various emergency relief programs, loans, and related services.

3)Regional emergency crews are on their way for assistance.

4)The American Institute of Certified Public Accountans (AICPA) has disaster recovery information located at: http://www.aicpa.org/pubs/tpcpa/feb2005/resources.htm

I hope this information is helpful.

    Regards,

    Dan

Thanks Dan for posting info on 'direct' forms of aid for the short term.

However, I'm actually much more concerned about the 'indirect' effects in the medium term ... i.e. former club customers in Louisiana, Mississippi, northern Florida being preoccupied with putting their lives/homes back together, and potential club customers throughout the country being hard hit by record high gas and oil prices as a result of the damage sustained by Louisiana refineries, oil rigs, oil import facilities etc.

Thanks for all of your prayers and every bit of help. I used to work on Bourbon St on weekends, but I currently reside in Lafayette where I go to school. My bf, who is a firefighter, lives in Chalmette, which is about 10 mins east of NO. I still havent spoken to him, bc he had to stay to work and help out with everything, but Im praying to god him and his guys are ok... Me and a gf are headed to houston for the weekend to find a club to work at, and will probably be traveling everyweekend for a while so we can work out there.. If anyone has any info of decent clubs where we can make decent money considering the drive, please let me know!!! Any info is helpful!!

Good luck to anyone else invovled in or effected by the storm!

Nadia indirectly raises an issue worth considering---dislocated supply (dancers) vs dislocated demand (custys).

There are probably more dancers from NO going to be working in other towns than there are customers who were planning to go to SCs in NO and now aren't. Custies out of town involuntarily are not in a spending mood and some dancers may be desperate to make out of town expenses. Since the price is an administered rate ($x/dance) it won't come out of price it will come out of per girl income and custys may have a bias for the novel--reducing incomes or home dancers. Since Houston is the closest major dance center it may make a normal dancer think about taking a vacation and giving up weak pay/shift.

Just do not plan on going to NO unless you want to swim and argue with the NAtional Guard.

PS Great post Dan! Mel you may want to lock it at the top for a few weeks.

Good idea Monty ... consider it stuck.

I agree with your assessment that Katrina has probably displaced at least a few thousand dancers, as it will be months before New Orleans and other gulf coast clubs from AL to MS to the FL panhandle will be operating again. It will probably be even longer before local economies and tourism recover to the point where guys will think about spending money on the luxury of going to clubs again in these areas. I also agree that clubs in the nearby 'unaffected' cities like Houston, Atlanta, Austin, north/central Florida etc. are going to see a major influx of these dislocated dancers, putting lots of additional pressure on the earnings potential of dancers already working there.

My advice to any New Orleans/gulf coast dancers who need to find a new gig ... think New York or Vegas or Chicago, not Houston or Atlanta.

Id love to book it up north, fortunately Im a fulltime student and only work on weekends.. but thats an extremely good point... News about NO seems to keep getting worst and worst right now.. One of the levees broke and there is more water coming in.. Houses whos rooves were visible are now totally sumurged.. New Orleans is now CLOSED, and will be for a long time. I doubt things will be normal for a few years.. Its a really sad thing, not bc of my job, but bc people that left the city, only packed a few changes of clothes and stuff they could haul in the car.. Could u imagine leaving EVERYTHING, and not having a home to go back to??? Sreiously, WHERE do these people even begin to move on with their lives??? Ive been crying my eyes out for all of these poor people, and trying to rummage through my closet and find old clothes, magazines, and anything else that may me useful at nearby shelters.. Please keep us in your prayers!

I am one of these entertainers. I worked at Rick's and lived in the French Quarter. I joined this site tonight in hopes of finding information/ help. I evacutated just in the nick of time (we had less than 24 hours due to the strange path the storm took) by some friends of friends. I am now in El Dorado AK with a few people nice enough to resue me but strangers none the less. I'm basically stranded but am resurching bus / amtrak/ flights options. I've lost my home, belongings (save for what I could carry on me) my Rick's (love that damn place). I don't know the well-being of my friends, co-workers or any of my loved ones. The towers are down so I can't call any of them. My son just went with my Aunt for summer vacation in Chicago (he's 3 ) a week ago....... it looks like I should just move there!

    So-
I would surly appriciate any advice, help, knowledge anyone has to offer!!!

As much as I love Nola and will miss it I can't help but get a little excieted at the prospect of moving to Chicago! I would love to hear your ideas.

(if anyone can help me get there, or help me WHEN I get there, I'll love you forever, lol)

Thank you! I have a lot to be thankful for. I was stuck outside for all 13 hours of it. I'm happy to be sitting here typing.

McKenna, if you have family in the Chicago area, that certainly sounds like a logical choice for relocation. The strip club scene in that area isn't the best in the country, but at least there ARE good clubs as well as guys who still have jobs that spend money in them !

Also, given the distance from NO to Chicago, there shouldn't be many other displaced dancers who choose to relocate that far away. As already posted, displaced gulf coast dancers who attempt to stay in the region are very likely going to find clubs in 'nearby' cities like Houston or Atlanta simply inundated with other gulf coast dancers who had exactly the same idea.

In regard to longer term thoughts about the gulf coast, NO, Biloxi etc, the situation appears that there are now roughly 1 million people who are effectively unemployed and homeless and who have little left other than the clothes on their backs. The situation is apparently such that the entire infrastructure of the region i.e. power transmission lines, water systems, sewer systems etc. are going to take months to restore. You've also got talking heads on TV already talking about the issue of obtaining future property insurance in 'high risk' areas such as the gulf coast. As such, many businesses and industries who need to do something fast to stay in business will likely relocate out of the region if they can. Yes the oil industry will rebuild - yes the tourist industry will rebuild - but many other industries may not. Thus the gulf coast may never return to what it once was.

What a shame, NO was a great money-making city for stripping. One could dance clean and still bank. My condolences for your losses, and best wishes for the future.

I have a friend that is in AK right now and coming to see me in FL in October. I don't know if he's near you but maybe he could help you out with meeting people there while you're there or a job or something. PM me if you need anything and I'll see what I can do to help. He is from N.O. but doesn't know if or when he'll go back. My family evacuated and doesn't know if they have even a house to go back to or when. My dad actually mentioned going to Chicago too but I don't know if he will or not. The company he works for I think has an office there.

I have made the decision to head back down to New Orleans to volenteer my help in whatever way I can. I have signed up with the Red Cross and leave here tomorrow hopefully. After that I'll be heading to Chicago to be with my son and family. If anyone can offer any Chicago (Zion) club advice I'd be glad to hear it....

The department of labor just announced unemployment is
available for those impacted by the hurricane. Even
for people who are self employed (which should cover
    independent contractors).

Yes, there is an Emergency Unemployment Assistance fund now established for self-employed people who were victims of Katrina. However, I'm certain that this will require showing proof of income in some official form i.e. previous tax returns so that it may be of limited use to some dancers.

I did hear that Ricks new club in New York is offering to pay airfare to NY and provide jobs for any Ricks dancers who were displaced by Katrina.

Any one knows if Scarletts in NOLA is still open or in good condition. I think most of the French Quarters area was above water and dry.

Updated on tax payments for victims of Katrina.

As I originally indicated, the IRS will be providing various forms of relief. Here is an update I received today.

Katrina Victims Will Have Until Jan. 3 to File and Pay Taxes
Victims of Hurricane Katrina will have until Jan. 3, 2006 to file any returns, pay any taxes or make any deposits due, the IRS announced Thursday. This extends and expands relief granted previously by the IRS. It applies to any return, tax payment or tax deposit with an original or extended due date that fell on or after Aug. 29, 2005.

All the clubs are closed and the residents that remain are about to be forcibly evacuated. On top of that, the Convention Center is a mess and the Superdome will likely be torn down. Even if the clubs re-open in a few months, it'll be much longer than that before it's worth it to work in them.

The French Quarter sustained little flooding damage since it sits on the highest ground in the city and is actually very slightly above sea level.

I wouldn't even think about trying to work again in NOLA for at LEAST a year. Even then I seriously doubt it'll be worth it for alot longer. It will take years for the city to recover, and may never recover fully. The Saints will be relocating, the Superdome will be torn down, businesses will be relocating. Conventions will go to other cities. A whole lot of things that brought alot of money into NOLA are done. At least for a long time.

But I betcha one could pick up some cheap real estate down there pretty soon.

I definitely agree dancers should be looking for places to go other than TX, GA or FL. Those areas will be overloaded with evacuated girls so you'll be much better off if you try going a bit further. Spread the extra supply around a bit more, ya know?

Agreed that New Orleans' future prospects for ever returning to 'business as usual' are probably dead at this point. Bridgette pointed out all of the reasons that 'straight' business dollars are going to move elsewhere. But also keep in mind that a very significant portion of the dollars floating around New Orleans came from, shall we say, business enterprises that were 'less than straight' - political corruption and drug importation to name just a couple. Given the future scrutiny which is going to be directed toward NOPD and local politicians once the shock of the emergency is past, the feds will NEVER AGAIN allow these sort of 'less than straight' activities to regain the major foothold they once had. Thus club business in New Orleans will never return to its former 'big easy' earnings potential.
