    Default Grand Jury Duty

I have to serve my civil duty starting tomorrow, Grand Jury Duty....anyone serve on this as opposed to just regular jury duty? I'm prepared to do alot of sitting and taking a nice big book with me. This could be a long couple of weeks or however long it will last...I just hope to hear some interesting cases.

Heh, I kind of like jury duty. You learn some cool stuff about the world.

Grand jury duty should be even grander.

A Grand jury is of 12 to 23 persons convened in private session to evaluate accusations against persons charged with crime and to determine whether the evidence warrants a bill of indictment- basically, big time no no's... but, don't bring a book, you'll be expected to be paying attention..

    HAVE FUN!

Way cool. Is this Fed or State? This comes under the 5th amendment for "infamous" crimes. Never met anyone that was a grand juror. If you get picked, this is a very big deal. Grand juries are really a unique historical creation with considerable power. It was a grand jury that ordered President Nixon to turn over the Watergate tapes, forever changing our history.

I don't know about NY, but generally grand jurors are sort of like professional jurors. They see a bunch of cases over a long period of time. (And they do exactly what Ginger said, with the standard of proof being probable cause.) In the Fed system the term for grand jurors is (I believe) 18 months-24 months. Yep, you're a juror for 1.5 to 2 years. I hope you have an interest in criminal law, because you will learn a boatload about it. And you'll learn the rules of evidence inside out. [edit: just checked and this seems to vary by district. Could be as short as one month]

My estimation is mostly what you'll do is listen to FBI and DEA agents testify (if a Fed grand juror) and then review lots and lots of documents (evidence) including probably piles of wiretap transcripts. I have a friend that did Federal crim defense and these things can be pretty interesting at first. Very TV-esque law drama shit.

Bring a book? This is a job. I imagine you'll figure it out after the first MONTH or so. You'll have at least 17 more left.

I majored in criminal justice.. we used to have to go and hear court hearings.. I always found it fascinating.. I'd LOVE to be part of a Grand Jury just for the experience.. was on a Petit Jury (just the regular ones).. but never Grand...

The laws of evidence.. now there's a whole separate topic!

That should be interesting. What is funny is I've been in court and seen a juror sitting there dead asleep. I think that is not totally uncommon. And with some of the long drawn out stuff you hear in civil trials it's no shock. It can get really boring and technical. But grand jury should be more interesting I would thing though I don't know much about it. But yeah, do bring a book because I know with regular jury duty you can sit there forever and not even get picked to sit on a jury.

I am so bummed. I ended up getting released today. I was actually looking forward to it. Oh well....maybe next go round. It was state duty, not federal.
The grand jury here can last if you are on it, 2 weeks, 4 weeks or I heard 6 months. It pays $40 a day here in NYC.
