    Default stripping and school

My classes start up again in on Sept. 8, and I was just wondering for those of you balancing school and dancing, how much can you generally handle? Right now I'm working around 35hours at my day job and 25 hours dancing, which is exhausting and too much. I'm quitting the day job when school starts, and school hours for me are 15 in class and about 8 extra in homework, reading, research, etc. Now, I used to work another part time job 30 hours a week and go to school. It was busy, but I tend to be a workaholic. Obviously with dancing there is no need for me to work so much, but I would still like to save as much $$$ while I'm young and fit as I possibly can...

That said, what seems to be a good balance for most of you? I was thinking 20-25 hours of dancing...it might seem like a lot, but the hours at my club are ultra flexible. I could break it into three long shifts or five short shifts, or one long, a couple short...weekends, evenings, whatever. I don't want to burn out, but would still like to (ambitiously) clear $1500-$2000 a week (about what I make now). Is this an unreasonable goal?

I've seen dancers work 20 hours and spend 24 hours on school, but that always meant 12 classroom hours and 12 hours of homework, including reading. You're fortunate to have a lesser homework requirement.

It's important to plan ahead for mid-terms, finals, and research papers. The dancers I know generally take a week off at finals, even those taking fewer courses.

If you have any trouble with your courses, get help from student support as soon as possible. It saves time in the long run. Even Ivy League students need help sometimes.

It's generally easier to work 20 hours in long shifts, because that minimizes overall travel and get-ready time. Save short shifts for times when you have a money regular coming in but don't have time for a long shift.

I've helped dancers understand math and science concepts in both clubs and college libraries. It's a nice connection when you talk about what you're learning (as opposed to when and where).

It is important to get into a rhythm and a routine and stick to it.
You can talk all day about balancing schedule requirements, but everybody is different.
What worked for me is not going to work for some body else.
It is important to keep a clear head. This is sometimes easier said than done.
Many evenings I have gotten into a hassle with a customer, and carried this emotional entaglement over into my school work. Keep these two separate. It is not easy but it can be done.
And lastly, don't take any drugs. Yeah, some people take it because they say they are nervous, twitchy, or some fool nonsenese. Just don't.
But all I've said here is obvious. Well, it should be. Just remeber it, and keep remebering it and you will do fine.

I have 16 credit hours this semester . And the "rule" is for every credit hour your supposed to spend 2 hours out of class reading, studying and homework per week. So 16 hours for class and 32 studying. So my school is more than a full time job. Im so gonna try to go by this this semester. lol we'll see how it goes.

I work just sat nights and the money is good. Before i started dancing and had to work 40 hours to make half of what i make sat nights my grades suffered.

    Good luck!!!!

I work 2 nights a week when school is in session. When I get the hang of the semester I might pick up another night or 2 but not planning on it.

    That's key.

Personally, I do as many courses by distance ed. as I can, but then I don't live that close to campus.

Right now I am going to be taking 19 credits. I know I'/m fucking nuts but I am behind and I need to catch up now if I plan to graduate this May. Usually I only am taking about 12-15 credits and work 1-2 days/nights. I've taken off work for the past two weeks because I was stressed from 4 summer classes and needed a little break. Last winter I was only working one day, if that each week, because I switched clubs and made in one day what I would normally make in 2 at the old club. But after having pulled in 2-3gs easily in a week, it's really hard to not work or work only one day. I understand exactly what you are going through, but I have a steep savings account and school is more important to me right now than working. I feel much happier and my mental health is better when I am not working/not working a lot. Good luck with school and I hope you don't let work get in the way!

I've got 12 units this semester. My schedule with work depends on my school schedule for that semester. This semester, I'm working weekends and going to school M-Thursday. But, things always switch up around midterms and finals. Bleh. It's so much easier than some two-bit job alot of other college student have to hold... The extra time and freedom... and money... eliminates SO much stress!

Thanks for all the replies! I could in fact get by working one night a week, but I just want to save as much as possible. My club is fairly easy going though, so I can do more now and simply cut back as much as I need to later.

I'm taking 16 credits this semester. I try to not work nights when I have a early morning class... so I work one weeknight, and friday and saturday. But then I see dog training clients three nights a week too. Switching to a club where I get home earlier helped a lot.

Wow, finally a topic I feel like I know something about, lol.

    I'm a college senior, and I'm taking 19 credits this semester. I also work 3 shifts a week...two 8hr and one 10hr.

One piece of advice I'd say, is that if possible, take courses that meet once a week for several hours...it leaves you more free time.

Also, school is most important(in mind anyway), so if you need to cut back your hours, and that means you make $900 a week, instead of $1200, well, unless you are living well above your means, that cut wont kill you.

Don't let work issues interfere with school...leave work at work. And vice versa...dont bring stress form school to work, cause it will hurt your money if you are walking around stressed all night.

Hope some of this helps...and good luck

My situation is along the same line. I am in med school, which means I live on loans. Works fine in the beginning of the semester, but by the end I am scraping pennies. I danced at home for most of the summer and I wasn't sure if I can handle the load, but listening to you girls make me think that maybe I can. <br>

I'm doing 15 hours this semester + studying for my GRE. I work 2-3 days a week on average, depending on what's going on in school. Best advice is to SAVE SAVE SAVE as there will be weeks when you can't work at all and you don't want to have to go without or forsake studying in order to work. I will bring study material to work in the event it's slow, so at least I'm DOING something.

As for running into students, I ran into a guy recently (we had also gone to high school and a year of elementary together!!) and when he saw me on campus, he was very cool and didn't even mention work. Some guys will be cool, some may be jerks. If I ran into a professor, I'd assume s/he would be just as motivated to keep it on the DL as I am

I can imagine relatives of family friends to be worse. I'll also holding a corporate casual day job on top of going to school, so I've also got "boss" and "work colleagues" to add onto the list as well. Maybe this is trying to tell me something!

Ugh, balancing school and work SUCKS! I always work my butt off during summer and winter breaks so I have some padding during the school months. I always take 12 units. Depending on my class schedule, my work schedule varies. But, I'd rather only make 2k one month and ace all my tests and study than make a bit extra money and have my grades suffer. I guess I work 20 hours a week when school's in. I go to school M-Th. I try to get in to work tuesday evenings but that rarely works since it's in the middle of the school week. I always work thursday evenings and saturday days. I work Fridays when a particular custy of mine can afford it (2-3 times a month) and Sundays when my week hadn't panned out as I'd planned or if I have the time/energy.

I'm part time school now and I'm working around 4-5 days a week. Meh. I'd just waste the time if I wasn't working anyway, and i have enough time to really focus and get my work done for school if I stay organized. It's procrastination that kills me, but I'm starting to actually avoid that trap. I'll probably take a week or two off around mid-term crunch though.
