    Default Insomnia: Natural Remedies

I have had troubles my entire life with sleep. I will go in cycles.. I'll sleep for about 5-6 hours (which is very good for me) or not at all.. and I'm being honest.. there are nights where I do not sleep at all... right now, I am going through the worst bought of insomnia I have ever had.

Since my surgery, I have not slept at all, at least not well, and no more than about 2 hours at a time. I am so tired that my entire body aches and I feel like someone has beat me up...

I can't get the military base to give me any type of sleep aid. I have to take a behavioral class for four weeks before they will prescribe something to assist me with sleep.. and this is AFTER they have recieved all my medical records which all have a track history of insomnia since a child.

I'm not a vitamin nut, nor am I into homepathic ways, but I know that most of you are.. what can I buy that will help me sleep? I seriously am worried, as I drive 80 miles round trip for work, the drive is all freeway but its straight and I'm afraid that one of these days everything will hit and I will fall asleep at the wheel..

I did a search, all that came up were old threads about reading a book, taking a bath. None of those things work.. so those of you who are into herbal remedies.. what do you use and what is effective?

    Much thanks!

Drink Chamomile Tea about 30 minutes before you go to sleep - it's pretty mild when you're talking about sleeping aids, but one of your best bets as far as herbs are concerned.

chamomile is a good tonic medicine. basically that means you can't take too much. but if if doesn't work for you no matter how strong you make it, try poppy or a few drops tincture of skullcap. just be careful- those can be strong.

I use Valarian Root capsules. Available at Wallmart, most food and drug stores. I travel all over North America on business and change time zones and hotels a lot. therefvore it is often very difficult to get to sleep.

Valarian works really well for me with no after effects.

Good luck. I have refered to Insomnia as one of my "hobbies" for years

Jumpin up Judas! A four week behavioral class just to get some freakin' ambien? I'd rather pay top dollar to the drug dealing stripper in the locker room. Just kidding. Not really. Well sorta. haha ok I'll shut up now.

A particularly nasty textbook always makes me sleepy.

Most OTC stuff wont help my insomnia, but I've used Valerian, 5-HTP, and Melatonin.

there is a natural hormone in whole cows milk. when you make it hot, it activates and helps with sleep.... also try kava kava stress tea, it feels alittle like you ate a weed brownie but on a very mild level... it comes in ready made packages by yogi tea... try your health food store, whole foods, etc.

be careful those of you who take valerian.... it can be dangerous for people with heart conditions or weak kidneys... for healthy people, though, it's pretty safe.

I'm sorry you're having trouble sleeping. I've had problems with sleep all my life too-I know it can be really frustrating. I think the most effective natural remedy is melatoin. I've tried Valerian root too since melatonin can be habit forming if you take it all the time. But Valarian root didn't do much for me so I'll take melatonin if I'm having alot of trouble sleeping.

I'm reading a book called Say Goodnight to Insomnia- it says that sleeping pills aren't a long term solution but a short term one. I just started reading this book so I can't give you suggestions from it or tell you how well it's worked yet.

I have trouble going to sleep and trouble getting up. Like once I get to sleep then my body doesn't want to stop sleeping. I do recall the hot milk thing from when I was younger. My mom would heat me up milk and it seemed to help. or yeah, masturbation does work too, at least for me. and smoking weed, but not sure you want to do that just to get to sleep.

Chamomile, Sweet Dreams, Mint tea - they all do wonders for me..

My boyfriend has insomnia, and I found that the scent of lavender helps tremendously. I just spray some around the house before he comes home from work and he has no trouble winding down and cuddling up for bed.

I would try as many forms of natural alternatives before using pharmecuticals. They really will mess up your liver, it happened to my mom.

    Good luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions.. I had my worst two nights yet.. no sleep at all.. but then again, I got good news the other day so I was really excited (hubby coming home early).. but, I have decided after one of the classes to continue them so I can get an RX for something stronger.. I can't take the sominex stuff, I once tried that and I got really sick from it.. I'm lactose intolerant so I can't really do the milk thing, although, that helps my daughter when she can't sleep (she has sleep issues too)... I'm hoping that in a few weeks I may just crash and sleep well... but I've been waiting for that for a few months now and nothing has happened so I'm not going to hold my breath..

I did buy some tea today, and I will plan on trying that tonight..

    Thanks again..
