    Default TIFF picks?

This might seem horribly callous next to all the posts about Katrina.

    But
Anyone got any good Toronto Film Fest picks? I hate the picking process - unless you really know a lot of names, it seems so random. I would prefer movies that are unlikely to find wide release after - I naturally zeroed in on the Egoyan, but you know that's going to be at Famous Players the following week, right? Anyone else going? Anyone else know any films happening here?

Is Sarah Polley in any of them? Please say yes.

I would want to see the Sarah Silverman movie and probably the Theo Van Gogh film (06/05). Also Stranded in Canton--Eggleston is a brilliant photographer and this sounds like a really cool find that was filmed in the 70s. This is probably highly unlikely to be showing anywhere else soon.

Also they are showing the new, freaky Terry Gilliam movie Tideland. I will also recommend The Devil and Daniel Johnston because I sincerely hope you are a fan.

There's also a Bettie Page biopic and, bizarrely, a film loosely based on Tristam Shandy

Fuck, Jenny. I want to be in TO next week. Have fun. My husband has gone the past several years but won't be this year so there goes my chance to tag along.

Saw my first movie tonight - The Quiet, with Elisha Cuthbert, by Jamie Babbit (of "But I'm A Cheerleader" fame). Really good for the first 2/3's actually - then it kind of lost me. There was a Q and A after, which was kind of disappointing because nobody had any good questions, so there were really no good answers. But I feel cheap criticizing other people's questions, because I didn't have any of my own.

Max - Sarah Polley was in one of the movies this year, but I didn't get in. It as my first pic, as well. Beowulf and Grendel, by STURLA GUNNARSSON, if you want to watch out for it. It was a pretty hot item this year, so I'm guessing someone will release after. I was going to mention - if you have the fondness for Canadian film, try Ginger Snaps (but please, for the love of god, ignore the sequels. Just pretend they are not out there).

Susan - loved your recs. I, unfortunately, didn't get into any of them - the Bettie Page pic had like a full cover, 200 page spread in one of the big locals here, so it was pretty hot. I did get the Theo Van Gogh. Hee. Movies excite me.

Ginger Snaps is terrific! I have a fondness for Canadian film if you count David Cronenberg. We are big Canadaphile geeks and subscribe to Toro and he's on the cover this month. I shudder at the thought of London Fields being a movie, but with Amis doing the screenplay and Cronenberg directing I suppose it stands half a chance. But only half.

I hope you get out to see some other cool flicks. Have a fun weekend.
