    Default Are you prepared?

After all this tragedy this week, my bf and were thinking we're not prepared at all should a natural disaster, terrorist attack, whatever it may be happen. We are putting together survival kits. It doesn't hurt to be aware and try to be ready as best you can in case of an emergency. You can find very good info on this website:

    http://www.ready.gov/index.html

Your local government websites should also have evacuation routes listed.

Great link, hon! Thanks for sharing that info with us. I worry about how prepared we'd all be too.

I have most of the supplies they showed for the most part , now if my home was buried 15 feet under water this might not work very good . These disasters are hard to prepare for I would be more prone to an earthquake where I am located . It keeps running through my head though that these people were warned to" get the hell outta there " was I the only one who heard this report ?

Yes they were warned.. But it was also "voluntary" evacuations. It should have been mandatory.

^^^ whether the evacuation was mandatory or voluntary doesn't matter if they don't have a vehicle or money with which to evacuate... New Orleans has a higher percentage of residents without cars than any other US city, and also has a very high poverty rate..... it was incumbent on the public officials at both the state and federal level to take an active role in gettting those people out of the area BEFORE the hurricane hit rather than just wait to collect the corpses.

This has all been a real "wake-up call" for me. Lesson learned....I will keep supplies handy and if I hear warnings to evacuate I'm getting the hell out of dodge. Understandably there are people without the means to do that, but I would do everything within my power to get out of harms way. Maybe people could hook up and have a plan with a neighbor, close friend, family member, etc. This storm hit a poor area of the country and it's making it even worse.

    firearms
Yeah, if you are able to train yourself and manage a firearm, honestly it's not a bad idea. This chaos could be happening to any one of us, we could be the victim at some point of a disaster. I know I just want to be as ready as I can.

Great link, hon! Thanks for sharing that info with us. I worry about how prepared we'd all be too.
YW....I hope it's helpful to everyone here.

This is one of my favorite sites. Everything is broken down into categories. The one I go to the most happens to be Patriot fiction- collected works. Really great stuff by amateur authors.

Very anti the Political Correctness trend. Though the flame wars are generally over and it has become a moderated board. Ask a question and get 12 flavors of answer choose the one you like best.

For a non- Political forum about preparedness try this........

Survivalist may not be such a dirty dishonest and derogatory expression soon.

Keep supplies close without being a spazz....and if you happen to be blessed with a strong leadership personality - then please....take control....do what you can to pull everyone together. Many people have survived through worse....but not when they are all acting as individuals.

Oddly enough, one of the movie channels has been showing the movie "Blast From The Past" every night this week. It's the one starring Brendan Fraser as a 35 year-old man who lived his entire life in a fallout shelter in the San Fernando Valley (his parents, played by Christopher Walken & Sissy Spacek, escaped into it during the Cuban Missile Crisis thinking they were under attack, when in fact a small plane happened to crash into their backyard). Anyway, Walken had outfitted the shelter to be just like the above-ground home, with generators up the wazoo, enough supplies to last 30+ years. Of course, he was considered a genius and a wacko all at once, but you can't say he wouldn't have been prepared in the event of a war or natural disaster.

My parents' home in Northern California is right by a fault line, considered even more likely than the San Andreas to have a major earthquake in the next 30 years. I'm sure there's enough food and clothing to get by for a week or two beyond an initial quake, but there may be a problem if there's a loss of utilities the way there are in NOLA currently.
