Default For Students affected by Katrina

I know there were a couple of student/dancers in the SW community affected by Katrina, so there's some info I'd like to pass along:

Texas A&M will welcome up to 1,000 students for as long as one
year from all four-year colleges and universities unable to offer
classes this fall because of the hurricane, including schools such as
Tulane, Dillard, Southern, Xavier, Loyola and the University of New
    Orleans.
The Association of Former Students will provide a toll-free
call center for providing information about university resources. The
    toll-free number is (88 440-7345.

Morehead State University will allow college students displaced by the giant storm to enroll for the fall term. Contact Enrollment Services by phone at 1-800-585-6781, by e-mail to [email protected] or online at .

The University of Georgia has announced an offer to enroll students
    affected by the hurrricane: .

Northeastern State University (Tahlequah, OK) is extending enrollment, waiving out-of-state tuition, and providing limited housing for students affected. Call 918-456-5511, ext. 2200 for more information.

I will continue to pass along relevant info. as it comes.

This pretty much only helps Texas HS grads, but at least they already let in 70 kids from Tulane:

The University of Texas at Austin is taking the following emergency steps, effective immediately.

These policies apply to students who were enrolling or enrolled in colleges and universities which are in the area of greatest disaster impact and which are likely to remain closed for an extended period.

    * Undergraduate students who are Texas residents or graduates from Texas high schools will be eligible to take available undergraduate courses at the University for the fall 2005 semester.
    * Graduate and professional students who are Texas residents or graduates of Texas colleges and universities will be eligible to take available graduate courses at the University for the fall 2005 semester.
    * Graduate students who have no need for coursework but who need to use libraries and research facilities will be eligible to use appropriate University facilities.
    * Foreign exchange students will be eligible to take available courses at the University for the fall 2005 semester if the University has a formal exchange agreement with the students’ home institutions.

Gulf Coast Presidents Express Thanks, Urge Continued Assistance

Our nation -- our higher education community -- has been coping with one of the most difficult weeks in our history. The devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless, and perhaps more than a thousand dead. We believe more than 30 colleges and universities in the Gulf Coast region have been severely damaged by the hurricane, and that up to 100,000 students have been displaced. We are clearly facing a long and challenging road to recovery at every level.

While it has been nearly impossible to communicate with many campuses in the affected areas, we have been able to speak with several presidents and chancellors – nearly all of whom remained on their campuses and rode out the storm. To a person, they are absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of students, donors, alumni and friends. They are particularly grateful for the outpouring of support from colleague presidents and institutions, and find it difficult to express their thanks for all the efforts to care for and house the students impacted by the hurricane.

While their immediate needs include very basic items like phone service, power, and dry office space, each of these presidents is greatly concerned about the long term financial impact Katrina will have on their institution. Specifically, they are urging colleague institutions enrolling their students to do the following:

    Admit students only on a visiting or provisional basis, so that they remain students of their home institution;

    Do not charge tuition if the student has already paid tuition to the home institution; and if the student has not paid the home institution, charge the home institution's rate of tuition and remit that amount to the home institution;

Certainly other fees, including room and board, would be charged by the host institution as appropriate.

We realize that every institution must decide for itself how to handle this unprecedented influx of student refugees, and that some state laws could make some of these financial arrangements difficult. However we also know – as former presidents and chancellors – how each of us would feel if put in the same disastrous situation. We urge our member institutions, to the best of their ability and in keeping with state and federal laws, to abide by these principles as they seek to help these students. We hope each of our member institutions will hear the call for help from their Gulf Coast colleagues, and find ways to honor these important financial requests as they continue their unprecedented efforts to help.

University of Texas at San Antonio & St. Mary's University are doing it as well. This is fabulous!!

UTSA opens enrollment to area students displaced by Hurricane Katrina

    By David Gabler
Assistant Vice President of University Communications

(Sept. 1, 2005)--The University of Texas at San Antonio is opening enrollment to area students who are unable to attend colleges and universities closed because of Hurricane Katrina's devastation.

The university is working to accommodate affected students on a case-by-case basis in academic areas where space is available.

"This is a terrible crisis affecting millions of people in many ways," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "If there is some way UTSA can help university students from this region who now cannot attend classes in Louisiana and Mississippi, then we will do what we can."

Classes at UTSA began Aug. 24, when the university enrolled more than 27,000 students. Students wishing to enroll should contact the UTSA Office of Admissions at (210) 458-4547.

Proof of Texas residency is required for in-state tuition, and prospective students must bring some type of documentation that demonstrates their status as a student in good standing at an affected college or university.

Seven campuses of the California State University system are also accepting students from the areas affected by Katrina

    link

and a couple paragraphs from the above link

"Among the emergency measures authorized by the CSU chancellor, Cal State East Bay will be permitted to provisionally accept students without transcripts or the ability to immediately pay their fees. The requirement to take English and math placement tests will be waived. Students who are residents of the Gulf Coast states affected by the hurricane will be exempt from paying non-resident tuition."

    plus

"Reed said seven CSU campuses were reserving space for students from Gulf Coast colleges and universities: Bakersfield, Chico, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Humboldt, Los Angeles and Sacramento. Some of the other 16 campuses may accept Katrina-affected students on a case-by-case basis, he said."
