    Default Watch for gasoline scams

The revival of the Ecoshit scam reminded me of the 1970s. Gasoline scams flourished left and right. One variatiation sold shares in fake companies with a new whixx-bang device which was said to boost your gas mileage xx%. Another sold an addon device which supposedly doubled your gas mileage and improved your sex life (last part is sarcasm but you can claim anything in a fraud).

Once gasoline prices start coming down also expect people selling you "protection" from prices next time by buying shares of gasoline in some tank somewhere or paying so much a gallon + some membership fee.

Fear and greed drive scam and gasoline prices ares something people are afraid of. Fair warning.

true ... but Katrina has brought about an even more insidious scam this week. Phony aid donation websites which supposedly collect money for Katrina victims are starting to pop up, with the only actual beneficiary being the person operating the bogus website !

Sure it is VG. The criminals are slash and burn artists who set up a charity or scam, collect money for a few weeks, and bail out with what they can get before anyone can check them out.

There are other less obvious scams out there in the form of false advertising.

"Sign up for our fuel saver package", they say. All it is, is an oil change or tune-up. With cars these days, a tune-up consists of a spark plugs change. Well, if you keep your car properly maintained, like you should, it'll prevent your car from using excess gas.

I wonder how many suckers took them up on their advertisement, thinking it'll increase their mpg.

The best low-cost way to keep your mileage up is to check the air pressure in your tires. Under-inflated tires make you gas mileage suffer--a lot.

A mechanic told me that for best over-all economy you should have 2lbs more air pressure in the tires than the tire and manual say. He said (no proof of facthood) that manufacturers and tiremakers suggested pressure maximize ride comfort and tread life at the expense of gas usage. I do not know if true-it could be an urban legend, but never have them underinflated as most cars are because of owner-neglect.

I turned wrenches on Mazdas for 5 years and Toyotas for 1 year.
I recommend setting the tire pressures at 3 psi higher than specs BEFORE the sun comes up. In the fall, temperatures are declining. Pressures should be checked and adjusted as temperatures drop into the winter months. In February, temperatures will start rising, but because tires lose pressure with time, you can check and adjust tire pressures less frequently.
